Why would you discourage KoS?

Recommended Posts

So... I'm kind of confused on how to start. There are a lot of threads on forums now regarding "implement X to reduce\get rid of KoS". "Get rid of KoS" is obviously ridiculous and I don't even want to get into discussing it.

Reducing the KoS is another matter, though. Usually, some kind of penalty (i.e. ruining gear as it is now, all kinds of sanity suggestions, etc) or a system to distinguish the 'hero' from the 'bandit'. And I don't think it should be done. This way you can only get a bit of safety (pretty ephemeral though - any of this suggestions won't stop someone from shooting you if he\she genuinely wants to) at cost of discouraging a part of player base to play sandbox game the way they want. It's not the best idea if you want DayZ to be still called sandbox in the future.

You don't want to discourage players doing anything in DayZ, actually. Rotten fruits, disinfectant, KoS - they are legit in current game mechanics and you can definitely counter (or avoid them) rather effortlessly. If you are a fresh spawn - you lose nothing if you die (so just provoke them to kill you if you don't like where situation is going), if you are geared - you should be more aware of your surroundings, I am yet to get fed something nasty after a 100 hours of gameplay (KoS happens, but it is a price of being friendly and more or less careless). And you are able to mute players for those who are concerned with all the kids shouting in direct.

And what I think should be done (and I'm quite happy with current dev progress on that) is ENCOURAGING things. Devs don't discourage KoS, instead they encourage not to KoS, which is different and a pretty smart thing to do. Complicated medical systems, persistent storage aka tents, vehicles (and repairing\maintaining them) and fighting off zeds (and looting the area afterwards) that will definitely become much more numerous and dangerous - those are the things that encourage cooperation between either pre-formed groups or complete strangers, while not taking away from anyone's experience. And it should stay that way IMO.

What do you think? Am I missing something? Would love to see opinions and different perspective.

I would make all those who KoS read every thread written about ways to stop KoS. If that doesn't stop it, nothing will. ;)

I don't think you are missing anything ... you can't really comment on KOS until the game is released ... hence I don't even bother. The same applies for character wipes and glitches ... when the game is released and these things are still happening ... then we should be able to discuss it and ask the devs to sort it out.

Right now discussing this stuff is a moot point.

I like your last paragraph. Sums it up well - "nothing is set in stone".

We are given the tools to make Chernarus whatever we want, the way we want, and if necessary remove the ones interfering... for a while.

I am glad the mechanics are there for anyone to use, but as a group the efficiency is exponentially multiplied.

In the end, the "DayZ experiment" is a perfect example of how a group wins over the individual.

What is KoS ?

A way to make sure you don't get in my way. Granted I could just say - "Don't you dare touch that can of peaches !!! " - but then you'd go to another house and i'd have to shout - " leave that frying pan right where it belongs !!! "

You see...

Maybe I KoS just because I role play a character as much as you role play yours. I know others do it for sport ( fine as well ).

( sometimes I actually help wanderers, go wonder... i must be going insane !!! )

Devs should be careful while taking steps in this direction. I, personally, don't want this game to become 'group-only'. Each and every game mechanic (except those that are IRL impossible for one person) should be perfectly available and doable solo. Game as a whole should still stay enjoyable (or at least bearable) for lone wolves.

And, BTW, groups are far more visible, less mobile and require a whole lot more supplies than a single player. Not to mention coordination required to perform efficiently as a group (let's forget about a telepathic link given by a TeamSpeak for a moment; even with it the amount of friendly fire is quite hilarious). And it is great, because it is not like one way of playing the game is all-round better than the other. Variety is the key.

I say how i see it

Atm is a lot KOS cuz its most effective at this phase of game, no humanity level, etc. A lot players crying about got killed bandits or whatever. Players which most kill others doesnt care about it, moslty players which died due bandits want to get ride of KOS. Again, Bandits is major element of this game, they was, are and will be in game, its normal. Even if they add humanity level, there alway will be bandits groups. I don't really know what players which want get ride of KOS image this game. KOS will be limited in future but not disappear.

I appreciate that people KoS, but it gets overboard. Also, there is a search function, seeing as theres 7000 posts on this. Literally.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of an alpha.  Not providing any feedback during alpha makes the whole thing sort of pointless.

Don't like KOS?  Get off the coast.

The only thing you can do in this game is KOS.

The KOS crowd keeps KOSing, so there's no benefit to not KOS yourself.  In fact not KOSing is a significant DISADVANTAGE in the game.  The person you didn't kill will most likely come back and kill you.  If you are trying to play as a HERO you might as well change that title to BULLET SPONGE.

Nothing short of a Visible Humanity System will ever slow down KOS.  I love how people say WHEN X HAPPENS, KOS WILL LESSEN.  Then X happens, and everyone still KOS's.

Have tents?  People will camp the tents and KOS the players.

Have more zombies?  People will wait until you're fighting the zombies, then KOS you in the back.

Stupidly complex medical system?  More people are encouraged to KOS because they need to get better meds.  Doesn't matter if some gear is destroyed, it's still faster and safer than looting.

i like to kos sometimes idc if people do it to me because of how easy it is to get regeared (i got an m4 with 240 rounds and fully geared within 5 minutes of spawning because i found a dead body in elektro). If i need blood i can eat and wait for 30 or so minutes without getting attacked, or i can just message one of my friends on steam and ask if they can come help me

Introduce a humanity system and people will still KoS.  To be killed on sight you first need to be seen.

Ever thought that maybe you are just not very good at the game?
