how do people manage this not getting killed??

I usually shoot every soul I see.

Or hold them up and take their guns.

Or force them to lay down and disarm.

Or I just avoid people

Pretty much anything involving keeping myself protected.

and no, when you die you respawn and start over with new-spawn gear.

lol :D

By being smart and learning the core mechanics of the game.

Don't trust anyone, especially un-armed people.

Think of everything you hate about humanity and this game will make you hate people even more lol.

Play with friends ... avoid people you don't know ... stay off the coast ... and generally stay in cover and out of open areas.

Bottom line is ... you are going to die and die often ... don't get attached to your gear (especially because it is still Alpha).

Play with groups of people you trust ... or stick it alone ... that is DayZ.

If you pretend everyone in the game is Dianne Feinstein, you'll survive a long time :) makes it a lot easier to shoot people in-game

Yep, welcome to permadeath. If you die for any reason, that's it, you're back to the start with a bandage and a torch. There are no teams or factions besides those you make yourself (either with your friends or those you encounter).

The way people manage it is generally by being exceptionally careful, particularly in and around the spawning areas, because it's where a lot of the lazy deathmatchers run round looking for people to shoot. Get yourself away from the coast as fast as possible, and look to gear up in the smaller towns and villages inland. Be careful and plan your moves and routes before you make them. Don't just blithely go charging up to people and making the mistake of assuming that because you're friendly, they are too. It's safe to assume that the majority of players will shoot you on sight, either because that's the only way they know how to play, because they want to be SUPER COOL like all those streamers they watch, or because they're working on the (not unreliable) assumption that if they shoot you first, they don't have to worry about you shooting them later.

It's a dog eat dog world in DayZ, so play smart and you'll live a lot longer.

Only teams that are in the game are "you" and "everything else". Sometimes "you" can include a friend that you trust or a clan that you have joined.

People without friends (like myself) survive by staying away from others and being lucky.

This was one of the best things about DayZ, I absolutely flipped out when I first heard that on one server there was a guy that had a base set up and was running a bus up and down the coast collecting fresh spawns, giving them hints and tips on how to survive the apocalypse then letting them loose with some simple supplies.

Granted that was ages ago, but to me it just underlined the whole craziness involved in the giant social experiment that DayZ offers.

It's not paranoia if they're really after you....

Pretty much it's part of the learning curve, I start pretty trusting as a new spawn with nothing to loose, who care's if I lose 10 minutes of game or whatever, this slowly escalates as I gather items until there is a very paranoid survivor running about somewhere in the far north.

So some advice, for you as your obviously starting out.

Don't run down the middle of a road.

Do learn which bushes produce edible berries.

Loot every single building until you figure out which one's don't spawn loot.

Every patch loot every building again until you have confirmed they don't spawn loot. (this paid off well for me and I know one building that "doesn't spawn loot" which produces a good supply of food)

Here is an over all beginners guide, I'd also recommend playing on lower population server to get the hang of survival before jumping into the full ones.

Um... Uh... Isn't that Rust? Bandage and a torch? I mean maybe it's cultural slang. I've heard torch for flashlight but never bandage for 9v battery.

The mod gives you a bandage, a torch and a random chance of getting either another bandage or some pain killers.

Painkillers sounds way better to me.

Trippin balls in a zombie apocalypse is waaaaay better than some stupid ol' bandages

Oh I thought there was a separate forum for the mod and this was an SA forum. I'm a dummy.

I only saw the YouTube video of the clan that had a base set up and was running a bus up and down the coast collecting fresh spawn, driving them to their Thunderdome arena and making them fight to the death by the light of road flares.

They both have their own sub forums on this site. TP probably forgot which he was in or something.

Probably PTSD from being KoS on DayZ.
