M4 without carry handle?

Recommended Posts

So I came across someone who removes the carry handle of his m4 for close range fights. How does this affect the weapon as far as accuracy goes?

Last I checked it doesn't affect accuracy.

I do it too. Helps with peripheral vision and when you ADS you have a clearer FoV.

The way m4 is right now nothing really matters because there's only horrible and good.

Good is m4 with magpul butt. Horrible is m4 with no magpul butt.

It really is that simple. Test it out your self

The carry handle contains the rear aperture portion of the sights, without which you aren't going to get as good of a sight picture...nothing to properly frame the front sight and accuracy would suffer as a result. It's designed the way it is b/c when you look through the rear sight, your eye will naturally center the front sight post.

Dunno how the game handles it...but I trust what Gews has to say about firearms in DayZ. if it's just as accurate with the front sight post only then why the hell not remove the handle..sure would open up the fov for close quarters as y'all have stated.

On a related note:  I thought I remember seeing a BUIS laying around in the game at some point, maybe 2-3 weeks ago ?? ...but I sure as hell haven't seen any lately.

IRL, the rear sight aperture is necessary to properly attain correct sight alignment (tip of the front sight post centered in the opening of the rear sight aperture), which when combined with correct sight picture (maintaining correct sight alignment while aligning the tip of the front sight post with your target, center mass) enables one to shoot accurately.

Without the rear sight aperture, a shooter IRL would have no way of knowing if the rear of the rifle was in line with their target. The front sight post could be aimed at the target, but the rear of the weapon could be canted slightly left or right. In CQ, this would not be too much of a problem, but at range, that slight shift would mean the difference between hitting your target or missing completely. ESPECIALLY at distances of 300m or more.

IN GAME, however, I suspect that it makes no difference. IRL, when you put the weapon in your shoulder you do it differently every time. Even with practice, nobody would be able to shoulder it and ADS the EXACT same way, EVERY TIME. In game, you do not have this problem. The character shoulders the weapon the way it is PROGRAMED to, and the front sight post will always therefore point exactly at what you are aiming for.

Frankly, I think its bullshit, but....alpha.

Without the carry handle sights attached, a character in game SHOULD suffer from reduced accuracy, and the loss of the ability to zero the weapon. Yes, the elevation of the front sight post can still be changed, but without the rear sights to properly align the weapon, it should be irrelevant.

I saw one not a week ago. But before and after, didn't see a single one.

Couldn't try it either, cause I had no M4 at that time and just left it where it was (right corner in the back of a hangar).

I saw the spread values for the m4 at DayZ DB. As you may have noticed, contrary to other firearms in the game, the m4 is design to be heavily dependant on attachments, making the base weapon highly inaccurate, and mitigating the value with said attachments.

The carryhandle, or any optics attachment for that matter, doesn't affect the spread value at all, meaning that you can safely take it off, and weapon accuracy won't be affected in any way.

I'm sure that at some point they will simply increase the base spread of the m4 by some value and make all optics attachments reduce this value just to make them necessary.
