Hethwill_Khan 233 Posted February 18, 2014 To be read. In the future... who knows. But with so many wood around I don't think I'll be burning any of them.
NuckFuts 265 Posted February 18, 2014 Lots of reasons I guess, pass times?, the fact that books are really in peoples houses? or what I like to imagine... They are but placeholders for pushing loot count boundaries maybe? As in one day they will be replaced with useful items.
Hethwill_Khan 233 Posted February 18, 2014 You may also force hostages to read good poetry. They must not falter in their reading. Their reading must be pristine... or else... death is the least of worries...

Irish. 4886 Posted February 18, 2014 Books exist for this simple reason: when all the loot has been taken, it makes you question if the game is even working. But books will always be left behind so when you find them, you know not all hope is lost. BIStrolling.

Ineedscoffee 464 Posted February 18, 2014 I have a soft side. Sometimes, I'll leave my deep northern area, and head far south to the coast. There, I will offer to escort Bambi's a few towns north, or I will pass out a water bottle with an open can of beans and a random book.Keeps me entertained lol
pillock 850 Posted February 18, 2014 [in case the OP hasn't figured out how to read books in-game yet; it took me a while]: Drag it from your inventory on to one of the hotkey slots, and you can open it from there. All the books are old enough to be exempt from copyright, so I think they are all complete volumes (though I've never read one cover to cover). Exit the book by pressing Esc. Some of them aren't even completely irrelevant to the game, and can help you in a practical way.

Ineedscoffee 464 Posted February 18, 2014 Also, once everything's in full swing, I could see books used for a variety of things. Starting fires, insulation, silencers with the flashlight, hell, mic you get enough of them, a bed made from the pages.
pillock 850 Posted February 18, 2014 If the road signs are in Russian shouldn't the books be as well? Fair point. But then they really would end up as firelighters. Even if they included an English-Russian-English dictionary, I doubt very many people would attempt a translation.
Esolu 320 Posted February 18, 2014 This is what we would call 'willful ignorance'. It reminds me of the guy who tried out the 'Scholar' playstyle: Read more, you might learn something. Good grammar is also a bi-product of said reading. Especially the books in DayZ. They are classics. Any one of them should do.I'd put a facepalm pic, but I'm too busy facepalming.
The Aquatic Land Walrus 565 Posted February 18, 2014 For reading.Fucking beat me to it. But, hey. Books aren't just for reading. They're great for bopping your neighborhood cat over the head with!
worst2first 71 Posted February 18, 2014 I carry a New Testament with a note requesting that my killer take my Bible to a specific location. I have no idea if anyone will ever read it much less follow through but it might give someone a little more immersion for their Day Z experience.
pacific_coast 632 Posted February 18, 2014 why do books exist in game? as filler loot. as inventory junk to troll the person looting your corpse. to read in game by equipping. to hold prestine copies of rare books for respect. to be a loot hoarder. and finally... I read the red badge of courage in school, and a prestine copy of that is always on one of my characters if I can help it.It's a book i'd actually read at the end of the world and it's immersive to the player. but im probably just gonna hoard them and host a book club RP server
Renard (DayZ) 10 Posted February 18, 2014 Fair point. But then they really would end up as firelighters. Even if they included an English-Russian-English dictionary, I doubt very many people would attempt a translation. I found a book called "Russian Cheat Sheets" it shows the Russian alphabet and traslation, got shot while reading it though
Trigger Hippy 176 Posted February 18, 2014 I just can't figure out why there are books in the game, I supposed to burn it but anyway I can't. They are soft, strong, and thoroughly absorbent.
