Is a backpack a necessary?

Recommended Posts

My opinion? Sure you could survive without a backpack, but ultimately you are allowing vanity to affect your chances in game.

Now that said, if I have a choice between a hunter backpack or a mountain one, I'll choose the hunter purely because it blends in better. This isn't about looking good but more blending into the terrain better. I do hope that somewhere down the line there will be the ability to use the spray cans on the backpacks as the orange mountain backpack is a serious camouflage killer.

I've got about 14 hours on my latest guy wearing an orange mountain and a UN beret. I've been shot at, but I've come out on top every time. I think it unnerves people.

I've seen the safety helmet, not sure what they are called in game, but they are the type of thing you would wear at a building site except they are all brightly coloured (blue, green, etc). I've always thought, "they must provide a lot of protection, after all that's what they are meant for", but with them being so brightly coloured it's just too much of a bullet magnet.

I like the idea of the beret though, and would wear one, however it's incidental head damage from swiping zombies when close in combat I am worried about and instead tend to find a motorcycle or helicopter helmet.

With limited space you still carry a can opener...I mean you can pretty much opens cans with "anything". If you want realism...carry a knife.

This is my character currently (Outdated picture but shows him without a backpack)

YqACZgB.jpg

Yesterday I picked up a hunter's backpack and I filled it with food and drinks, so I could regenerate myself fully:

Fu3fQQM.jpg

(Imagine the water bottle was a canteen and you got my current guy)

I have maintained that status for about 4 hours by just picking all the food I see and then eating it up. Now I have a loaded magnum, a can opener, an olive cap (Had to pick it up) and shitloads of food and .45 rounds in the backpack.

I can easily survive without the backpack and I plan on dropping it off on the coast.

i keep splints in my backpack along with a defib and other life preserving items.

Epi pens and morphine fit much better in the 1st aid kit,  Yesterday I had a hunters pack and was only using about half the space mostly because I was collecting SKS and Mosin ammo plus a magnum and sawnoff. and I really like the couriers backpack but surviving without a pack at all would be interesting.

1 hit in your chest and everything is ruined. my backpack safed my live more than 1 time. have 2 protector cases in it  full with medical stuff and 1 ammo box (full). in my clothes just food, 4 cupled mags and non essential items. got often hit from a camper with mosin or sks. but survied all firefights. lose only food and some ammo, the essential stuff is safe in my backpack and cases :)

In a way your right, it was a vein choice. But what you think about the notion of pushing myself into towns more often for loot? That was one of the other things that made me choose to ditch it. I was seeing a town, checking inv and not really see any reward for the risk. Now I can carry 1 bag of rice and 2 cans of soda at time....this could get interesting :)

So I finally got my all black loadout, but the hunter pack was ruining it a bit. So I thought, how hard would it be without one. After some inv tetris I got all my essentials into the combo of tac shirt, cargo pants, and assault vest. Im hoping it pushes me into towns much more often for food and water, had enough in that pack to survive in the hills till beta lol.

So what you think...is a backpack really needed?

Yes thats a silly question to ask. Theres always going to be things like ammo and food and what not. But the real question is are you just waiting for the black back pack designs to pop up? XD

Well....yes lol. But it raised the question in my head, and as I said I managed to get everything I need into that combo, 80 mosin rounds, medkit, compass, 1 rice 2 soda, sewing kit, and some stuff I carnt remember lol. Everything I need with some spares. So while its nice to have it....is it needed? Im hoping later in the game a choice like this could have a big impact on stamina and stuff. So while I haven't got as much protection, or extra gear, I will have...."nimbleness"... on my side :)

For me lately it's been rope and burlap, or nothing at all.

I really like traveling light in DayZ.

Unless your playing a support role, there isn't much need for 48 or slots. 50 if you have the TTsKo jacket.

the courier bag is my solution. I find it and the ImpBP have a very low profile, and give that "survivor" feel along with it. I also prefer to travel light, unless I'm dicking around on regular, then I just load up on anything I can get my hands on and go screw around with my 3pp-uber-1337-wall-hax-420No5c0p3z5\/\/a6Y0lObL4zItJ35us

I recommend a courier bag or improvised backpack, you get a couple of extra slots and it's very low profile. Because it's not that common your group members can recognize you easier. All other backpacks greatly increase your hit box (just look at your side profile) and visibility. The crafted backpacks hug your body and are good for camo when you're prone.

The only food/water you SHOULD ever carry is a canteen, you can eat something like 40 cans of beans before you max the amount of calories you can store (need to eat over a period of time). So you should always eat everything you find as soon as you find it.

My setup:

M4 spray painted green

Olive Tactical Shirt (x4) Canteen, Compass, Headlight

Green Cargo Pants (x6) 60 Stanag M4 Double Clips

Camo UK Assault Vest (x8) Medkit / Pistol

Improvised Backpack for extra pistol clips, handcuffs, extra medkit, extra canteen, etc.

Normally you only want one spare clip and stack bullets on top of each other for space. Only the double duct-taped stanags are inventory efficient enough compared to storing raw ammo. I carry morphine in case of leg breaks, bandages, saline bag, iv start, epi pen (since it's fixed last patch to revive people), and if you find it charcoal tabs for food poisoning (optional).

I also use the splitting ax vs the fireman's because it doesn't stand out as much. It takes two hits to kill a zombie vs one. I also just use a green beanie because it's very low profile.

It doesn't matter if you carry all the gear and protection in the world, it will make your game experience worse when you lose it all from getting shot. PVE is not the danger, PVP is. The best protection from getting shot is not to get shot, you can't shoot what you can't see, so making yourself less visible by being smaller and blending in is better than a ballistic helmet or 20 cans of food.

Good read. When I read something like this, I feel like liberating myself and throwing my hunter pack away!!! Its spoiling my black theme anyway! The whole zero backpack thing is so appealing and temps me to do it.

Not sure why you guys say get rid of the hunter pack, fits perfectly in with the TTkSO stuff I wear and camo baseball cap. I guess that's because I'm always in the trees, but that's just me.

While not the give away coloring of the mountain pack, it still sticks straight up out of the grass like a shell.

Your basically an easy to spot turtle....

Not really. You don't need to carry food, ever, and at most you need one bottle of water for emergencies. Ammo, can opener and bandages should fit nicely elsewhere.

I also find a good set of browns make me harder to see then some camo monkey. Keeping a sleek, woodsy colored profile, has helped me paint my target nine times out of then without them seeing me first. I'm also able to go prone, without a massive mound sticking off my rear end. Recently switched to darker brown shoes, and ditched my firemans axe for a splitting axe. The wooden handle lends better then the fiberglass yellow and red head.

Wow! You really do look harder to see than in camo.

The areas I don't really blend well, are cities, which I avoid, and open fields. Which I have no buisiness being out in anyways. Tree lines, deep woods, and towns are where I tend to stay.

Well to report back on this one, I haven't missed my pack once lol. Now maybe that's just the state of the game atm, if basebuilding was in id need extra space for a tent or whatever they add. But as far as plain survival goes its just as easy without one. Heres what im carrying atm without a pack...

i agree, but my buddy fell off some stairs the other day and broke his leg, he used his morphine and epi pen and still couldn't walk, used my splint on him and he was fine, so atleast for a while i don't trust them as much as i do a splint.
