What's the difference between vanilla/origins/epoch? which would people recommend to someone that's played SA to death, but never touched the mod?

Vanilla. Because it's Vanilla. The Original.

 

It's currently in version 1.8.0.3 and a lot of things have changed and it has a lot of stuff in it, that the SA doesn't have yet. It's extremely stable and when runs smoothly on a well administrated server. :)

 

Epoch is easymode where everybody runs around holding hands, building bases and selling stuff and where you have godmode in certain areas.  <_<

I would recommend just Vanilla... and ALSO. Battle Royale! It is quite a fun mod for the mod...

Overall DayZ Epoch is the best right now. It takes the game to the next level with crafting and building construction.

Vanilla all the way. Epoch is for those who cry when they die (imho). If you've never played it before I highly recommend playing the mod and learning all about it, it'll stand you in good stead for when the SA gets further along its development.

Or Namalsk if there are any/many servers still running it... I loved that version of the mod.

Nah, vanilla is a shooter and Epoch is the same shooter with much more features.
