What advantage is the Military Flashlight?

Recommended Posts

I got one of these last night in a deer stand and have tried to make use of it, but its rather dark red glow makes it less useful than the normal torch. I was wondering if this is novelty or if it has some kind of use?

I was expecting a 'super blinding beam' or something of the sort being military, but it seems to have a god awful red hue and the same torch light up radius as the normal yellow one. As far as I can tell it has no use.

I think the deal is that it's easier to be stealthy with it since others can't see you as easily while you can more or less see well enough.

I believe the red tint is supposed to help keep your eyes from loosing their night vision in real life at least.

I'm reiterating something I've heard elsewhere, as I've never had the nvg's to test this, but supposedly it doesn't blind nvg-wearers like a white light does. Also, apparently the cone of light is less visible, making the source of the light less apparent to observers.

Red is also less visible because it isn't scattered by the atmosphere. SCIENCE.

those of you who have used NVG's IRL downrange probably know it isn't exactly like Tom Clancy. alot of times it's only marginally better. I think a broader spectrum of night vision in the mod would be preferable to a military flashlight. It doesnt really seem like I have any night vision, every time I load into night it feels like my character was just staring at the sun for 30 minutes then tossed in solitary :). Doesn't bug me too much though, this mod is like digital heroin.

You can't see the light from as far away (a normal flashlight is like a bloody long-distance beacon at night announcing your presence to anyone in front of you).

It is harder to spot by players and Zeds, especially from a distance, and will not be as visible in particular through windows and inside buildings. It offers a big advantage overall.

in real life, the red spectrum torchlights do not cast a 'beam' like white light does so its actually quite hard to spot the sharp cone end of the torch unless its directed directly at you.

Ingame however I believe this is a limitation to the engine, it still shows the cone albeit a little less obvious.

What is this SCIENCE? And where may I purchase one?

You can find SCIENCE at any local book shop.

These book shops are often wedged between coffee bars and trendy clothes shops. Look for shops that 97% of the footfall seems to avoid for fear of learning something.

My aggressive cynicism about contemporary society will now subside momentarily.

As a military veteran - I can confirm it is red because the light doesn't "carry" as far away and doesn't affect your ability to see in the dark like a normal one would.

Plus it is easier to toss a cammie blouse over a group of you looking a map on the hood of a vic and discuss a plan of action without your light shining through and making you look like a glowing ball lol.
