Alternatives to the ballistic helmet

I think the ballistic helmet feels just too good for obvious reasons - it provides the best protection, while also camouflaging people well. While there's a big array of other helmets, none of them provide anything substantial apart from the motorcycle helmet being a poor mans ballistic helmet. From a practical point of view, there is no need to wear any other helmet unless you want to be differentiated at the cost of not being able to blend in the vegetation. I shot a guy from a mosin at like 50 meters directly in the head, he woke up after a few seconds - something he could never have done with any other headgear.

 

There need to be some good alternatives to it, or reasons to wear other hats like the ones that are coming. Right now there would be no practical reason to wear, say, a green radar cap instead of the helmet. Perhaps the ballistic helmet should hinder certain aspects of the game due to its bulkiness, I am not sure. But at the moment its a helm that can camo well and offers the best protection, an obvious winner over anything else.

I think all things should be able to be painted black, green, camo. I am currently wearing a pilot helmet because I think it looks cool but would love to paint it and hope it has some bullet/punch protection .

There definitely needs to be other reasons to wear certain gear i think. there are police issued ballistic helmets to but sadly no police gear is really in game yet.

 

Ballistic helmet sure as hell didnt save me from getting one shot from an axe to the face though. Bike helms have the one up over ballistic when it comes to melee combat.

ballistic helmet is definately not camo'd, if you think it gives you camo then think again, a brown/green/black beanie or radar cap is harder to spot than a helmet.  Those helmets stick out and doesn't blend with environment.

Screw helmets, I am a black beanie or black radar cap only kind of guy.  Helmet and gas mask are essentially the uniform of a bandit and shot on sight.

It's colored in a natural green, which is pretty much all you'd need to blend in. The stuff you stay in isn't of a uniform color and the helm fits most places perfectly.

 

 

Once the gas mask and other gear gets a proper implementation, perhaps it should be mutually exclusive with the ballistic helmet. They do clip after all.

I think there should be more helmets with equal or similar protection to the ballistic helmet, like different styles, colors, modern Russian helmets like Сфера (Sphere) just so everybody do not look the same. And then all those helmets should be much more rare. Now I usually find a ballistic helmet pretty early in my character's life and after that I don't wear anything else. I want to say they should be as rare as press vest, but I don't know how rare it is exactly because I have never found one, maybe that is a little too rare. But definitely much rarer than they are now. Otherwise there is just no reason to have all that headgear that is currently in game, except the helmet.

I don't wear ballistic helmets.  EVeryone wears them and honestly, they really don't offer much protection.  Motor cycle helmets are a better defense since melee attacks are a greater danger.

 

I like cowboy hats and beanies.

Yeah but MOST fights take place in close quarts combat in game. RARELY do you ever have ranged fights. Firing a mosin in a house trying to fend some one of with an axe that gets the jump on you is a death sentence especially if your wearing a ballistics helm. There NEEDS to be a medium between the two something that offers a little bit more ballistic and melee protection for various situations not just one or the other.

The thing is a mosin shot is not the only thing the ballistic is going to protect you from. Even frantic CQC will often yield a stray shot to the head. If you can take 1 more shot than the enemy and you're both spraying whatever you have.. chances are that's enough to make you the last guy standing.

 

Mosin CQC is still often the case from my experience. If you hit your first shot, grats, you won the fight. If not, you are most likely dead.

I mentioned in another thread that they effectively stop a head-shot from an M4A1. While it may not be much protection, it gives you protection from a bullet that otherwise would've capped you.
