Why did he just sit down?

Recommended Posts

So, earlier today, I logged in on top of this industrial building (brown one that is not enterable, has 2 ladders).

After a few moments to let the desync go away, and reorganize my inventory, I prone and start scanning the area.

LOW and behold, running out in the open, coming from the small military base south of NWAF, I see a tiny black speck moving across the field in my direction.

I quickly pulled out my sks, zeroed it to 200, and waited for him to get closer. He was maybe 50 feet or so away from the main road, when I opened fire. I missed the first shot, but the second and third hit, I think.

He stopped running, turned in a circle, and then did the strangest thing: He just sat down. Not crouched, but SITTING.

I finished him off then, and looted his corpse. He had a ton of sks ammo and a nice pristine storage box, which I took. I drank all his soda, ate his apple, and took the bag of rice for later. I had no need for the rest, so I hid his body and ran back to a hidey hole to play a rousing game of inventory tetris, shortly after which the game crashed and I called it for the day.

But my question is, WHY? Why did he just SIT DOWN? He made no attempt to escape, return fire, take cover (not that much cover was available to him). Why?

So THATS what happens to my character when I log out. I sit down....

LOLOLOL!

Did he just not realize that you cant log out and just DISSAPEAR anymore?

Very nice. had that system not been in place, this would have been about the 5th time I had the drop on another player only to have him vanish. I am very happy right now.

For a while there, I felt bad. I thought, maybe he was trying to surrender or something. But no, he just logged out like a coward. Fine. All ur stuff is either MINE, or vaporized in the hide body mechanic.

I hate snipers. You "got the drop" on him, huh? Nice.

I agree that he should have played it out, but honestly, crouching on a building and shooting someone from 200 meters isn't combat.

We should not call it "combat logging" in that sense.

this isnt a fast paced first person shooter

people dont go running around the corners in cities guns drawn

sounds to me like the combat in dayz is not the right combat for you

do you think in real wars people run around like idiots in urban areas shooting non-stop?

Then what would YOU have me do? And what WOULD you call it?

He was in combat, with and engaged by me. He made no attempt to interact, either by surrendering (had he put his hands up, I might have played it out further), or returning fire. He and I were in combat. He logged out. Combat logging.

And what SHOULD I do? I trust NOBODY that I don't know personally, and rightly so. Of all my interactions with other players, 98% of them result in combat. Bambis? The attack me with their fists hoping to get a lucky knock out and easy gear up. Geared players? I have not ONCE encountered a player with a gun that did not open fire the moment he saw me.

I had superior positioning, skill, luck, etc, so I won. Its that simple. Nothing personal. Not doing it to troll. Its just survival. He posed a potential threat, had food and water I needed, was heading in my direction, and was heavily armed. Further, HE took the risk of blindly running out into an open field with NO cover, into an area WITH cover and highground, all in the vicinity of a valuable loot zone. Today, he was unlucky (and cowardly). Tomorrow "I" might be the one under HIS scope, as I infiltrate an area and find him waiting in ambush.

Welcome to the jungle, baby.

Sure..... I understand why you KoS, but please, don't tell us that. After all, he gave up, right? He just sat down. I get why a lot of people KoS, but come on, please be honest about it.

Oh hush up.  DayZ is built on realistic ballistics.  The enemy was 200 meters away.  Someone can be expected to hit center mass with an M4 and iron sights at 500 meters with virtually no training.  They were so close the Devil could've kissed him on both cheeks. Hardly sniping.

But I bet you wouldn't be happy unless they shouted their family names and directly challenged one another like Samurai, or lined up with muskets.  War is war, even bangers shoot from cover.

As for him "just sitting down", he logged like a coward.  All bets are off at that point.  I'd specifically blow away anyone who combat logs, period.

How can you say you have superior skill over that guy?  You said you logged on top of an industrial and a minute or two later he popped up...you also said you missed the first shot. Luck yes maybe, positioning obviously but to say skill is a stretch

I feel I should be clear about this. YES. everything you say is true, but also lacking some context. I missed the first shot, but subsequent shots all hit (as far as I know. I only know the first shot missed because the dirt kicked up behind him). Considering dispersion being what it is, I would say this is decent shooting. Not great, but decent. The skill came in my choice of positioning. Read Sun Tzu. Terrain and knowledge of it is everything in combat. I had been camping this spot for a WHILE now (on another one of my "hunting trips"). Last night I spent several hours patiently waiting for prey on a high pop server, and saw NO ONE. I logged in today expecting much the same, but as LUCK would have it, a mere minute later prey finally came to the watering hole.

In combat, TECHNICAL skills (shooting, etc.) are just as important as TACTICAL skills.

Not that I am defending his combat logging. I smiled when I read your OP. But, I wanted to say it's easy to win when you're the only one playing. What I mean is this guy seemingly posed no threat towards you. He was running in an open field, pretty much helpless, and you reacted like he was hunting you down. Like he was engaged in combat with you, which he wasn't he was being shot at from someone hiding 200m away. Even worse when you admit you just logged in, since that might mean he cleared your rooftop, only to have you appear out of thin air.(But, I doubt he cleared anything if he was running in the open.)

Anyway, my point is that you shouldn't act so high and mighty for sniping at a random guy who posed no threat to you. That's not having superior skills & positioning, that's just preying on the weak.

He probably thought whats the point with some butthumping bandit shooting at him?

This kind of attitude, NOT KoS, is what is ruining this game's community.

"So somebody shot at me, and now im gonna lose all this digital stuff..."

Cry some more. Then use derogatory and hateful terminology that expresses a lack of tolerance for the lifestyle choices of another human being.

Im not the one ruining this game.

Mojo I disagree. He posed a great threat- he was in the OP's area of operations as a tango, not a teammate. DayZ being DayZ, that means that he was a viable taget as a non-friendly. The interaction went down well- and finished excellently because the noob logger had no apparent idea that you cant do that anymore.

Beans for the OP, even though I would be pissed if he did it to me- only because I failed at situational awareness and wasnt able to do it to him first.

I don't feel or intend to express being high and mighty.

And I DO feel that the kill was totally legit. Had he been in the town already, or right beneath me, I would have let him go un molested in the name of fair sport.

But he was running, full tilt, from the military base, in the open, towards the little town I was in (Vybor). I doubt very highly that he cleared that rooftop, ran to the base, AND ran back. And even if he had cleared it, you cant just assume it stays empty after you leave.

And, as I said before, I WAS lucky. That time around I had the better position, luck, situation, etc. Tomorrow I might be the one under the scope. Ambushes can be, and are, everywhere.

If you decide to shoot someone, why plan to lose?

Anyways OP got the full pleasure of the new anti-combat logging mechanic and we got a nice anti-combat logging mechanic story.

Win-win.

You are a sniper KOS bandit.  It is what it is.  But why would you feel bad about it?  What were you hoping for, him to cry into an open mic?

But yeah. he combat logged, and at that point he gets no sympathy.

Are you sure he sits down when logging? The clips I have seen only shows them crouching, then proning, then crouching again then standing up etc. No sitting.

So, because someone exists and you can see them, they must die. Gotcha. I disagree, but I understand.

I meant that he could have pulled out a scope and checked that rooftop prior to leaving the safety of cover. But, that doesn't really matter since my point is that you're looking at this game as a big pvp competition, where everyone is out to kill you, so you better get them first.

You say tomorrow you might be under his scope. But, what if that guy never sets up ambushes and kills random people? What if you are under his scope and he just watches you pass? Is that a lack of skill on his part for not taking the shot? Does everyone have to run around Chernarus like a ninja and kill everyone they see?

Why not kill people based on their actions rather than your paranoia? I guess that's my point.

Bunch of people: blah blah blah

OK, I would say that I am more of a roleplayer.

I would start out closer, so he could hear me on direct coms.

I would announce that I have him in my sights and he has only one chance to live- put your hands up. Or actually sit down, or walk slowly north, or  lie on the ground, or 100 other options.

The people who snipe want to paint everyone else as 'COD kiddies', but that is what they are, themselves.

I have never sniped another player without warning, and I never will. Snipers without warning suck, and they are the weakest people in the game.

OP is a KOS bandit sniper trying to justify himself as a hero.  Put his hands up?  Yea, sure, that works what percentage of the time when a sniper realizes he hasn't killed you with the first shot?  I put KOS snipers in the same kiddie category as combat loggers.  Thankfully they all seem to love killing freshies in Elektro and leave the rest of the map to players with a spine.
