nukesss 4 Posted February 6, 2014 Sniping in this game isn't Call of Duty easy, meaning you just put the cross hair over and pull the trigger. But for a game with such an open world and large spaces, sniping is very over powered once you get a slight grasp on how to accommodate your aim for a distance. To fix this problem, I suggest, you implement wind. Wind that is different in different parts of the world, and changes like it does in real life. To help players master the wind, you can find an item like a wind tracker, which is like a little flag that gives an indication of how the wind is blowing. Or give players an action that "loosely estimates wind" within, lets say 5 mph, that allow them to take a risky shot if they don't have a wind tracker...Just a rough idea, that could make the game much more realistic and make sniping more of an art, rather than an easily acquired skill.
blackberrygoo 1416 Posted February 7, 2014 I like this idea could use a little changing here and there if there is problems but as for high grade snipers i definitely agree this is going to be a problem like in the mod ( which is why all the overpowered snipers were eventually banned on a lot of servers ) . Sniping with moisins and rifles like that won't feel the difference too much seeing as how they aren't long range snipers so to speak .
BigHairyFenian (DayZ) 18 Posted February 7, 2014 I've wanted to see this implemented into a game for a very long time, the only game i know of that does it is Call of Duty 4 and even then it was only one section and was heavily scripted. It would be interesting to see in an unscripted, open world setting. Marksmen would actually require a spotter and would have to take their time.
DaedalRogue 83 Posted February 7, 2014 Adding dynamic wind is complicated. It's a very complicated system to simulate and maintain - if you added a few constants then it'd be a little easier but wind behavior changes based on time of day, weather, pressure systems, terrain, the pressence of wind breaks like trees/bushes/walls and various other things. I'd linger on the edge of this being too difficult in this engine as it currently stands. Then there'd be the need to add things to help monitor wind directionality and speed. a_ruttle 199 Posted February 7, 2014 Realistic ballistics was in ACEII mod for arma 2, can't be that difficult to put it into dayz

Marksmen would actually require a spotter and would have to take their time. You need to play sniper elite then, wind is a constant factor. OP +1 you have my beansI agree though wind would be amazing in making long ranged shots require much more skill, currently I have no problems in calculating an 800 meter + shot very quickly.I really like the part about adding an action for estimating wind speed and direction, estimate should be in text though instead up numbers (eg: Wind is blowing NE. Wind feels strong.)Adding lootable wind meter would also become a high demand item for snipers, just like range finders.
