Fists/melee weapons making bullet ricochet sounds

I was walking through some woods yesterday, near the spawn area when I thought I heard someone shooting at me. The sounds of bullets ricocheting never stopped, so eventually I came up from the crawl and started zig zagging in an attempt to avoid being an easy target.. while doing that, I bumped into a guy punching a rock for some reason.. turned out he was my assailant.

 

Well, that's how I discovered that melee-ing something makes bullet sounds, pretty sure it's a known issue but if it was me I'd just leave it with no sound at all rather than what it is now :P

Watch out for the guns, they'll getcha.

 

In all seriousness, fists and melee weapons weren't given bullet sounds out of choice. It's because the engine doesn't facilitate melee combat and this is the workaround. It will be fixed later in development.

It's a well known 'bug', in that it's a place holder for a better sound.  Not real high on the priority list of things to do.

Although it's an annoying bug that exists (or existed, not sure if it was fixed or not, never noticed it much) even in the mod, it can be quite useful. Really good for luring out players you're trying to kill from an area by making them think they are under fire. Pretty useful for trolling friends too.

It was always fun to beat the wall with an axe making bullet sounds and watching people combat log

Used to use this as a ploy when approaching people around 'hostile' areas. Very funny to watch someone log to get away whnn you've got no gear.

 

Not sure it would work with the new timer mechanic in game.

A great way to troll friends into thinking there under fire.

 Or troll you, by scaring the hell out of yourself when you accidentally hit the left mouse button, while looking around.

 

wait nvm, I have never experienced something as noobish as that.. :(

Fireaxe'd an infected and ran like hell because it sounded like I was getting shot at.

question - When you hear these sounds - is it only you?

or do people nearby hear shooting sounds?

 

I generally try to lkill Zeds with axe to try to remain stealthy and not to draw attention to myself.

 

...BUT.....if people arround hear melee as gunshots, then it is quite a waste/risk to do melee zeds.

...BUT.....if people arround hear melee as gunshots, then it is quite a waste/risk to do melee zeds.

 

If it is a clean hit it should not produce the gunshot sounds, but with desync that is not always 100% accurate.  If the server thinks it was a miss or that you hit something other than the infected that is when the gunshot sound is heard.  With desync one could hear the gunshot sound and kill the infected all from one swing.  I would advise avoiding the infected and killing only if they agro.  Also be aware that an infected that has agro on someone is a clear indication that there is someone there to get agro.  Therefore, if you get agro, avoid running out into the open to kill it.
