hells high 676 Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) Hello all, Well unfortunately it appears the Balota Book Exchange will be closing down in 1 week. A server that started as an experiment to give myself a stable place to play, where I knew there would be zero admin/clan abuse nonsense, grew into a pretty popular community. Unfortunately as stated before I cannot continue to pay the crazy DayZ hosting fees on my own, and donation support to keep the server going has been nonexistent; Aside from PhilB's kind and generous donation, which allowed the server to be renewed so as not to waste their cash. This is perfectly fine, nobody expects to pay for a public server nor should anyone run one expecting help, I just can't do it on my own is all. As a result the service will not be renewed after these next 7 days. It's been a lot of fun playing with everyone, seeing and meeting the regulars, and surviving (but usually dieing) in the apocalypse. Please do not donate to the Clan-Pay account, unless you somehow managed to wrangle a large group. I will not be renewing the service for a few bucks, regardless of how appreciated these generous contributions are. I appreciate that you would give even a single cent to keep the community going, but the DayZ hosting fees are so high at the moment. Once the money goes into the Clan-Pay account it is in Multiplay's hands and is non-refundable, also note that I can't take it out or use it for anything else. Thanks for playing everybody! Master_Catfish 5 Posted February 7, 2014 I think I'll try playing on your server. Hardcore just means first first person view only, right? Also... Is there actually a book exchange? The name gave me a good laugh, since I can't really imagine a book exchange in Day Z amounting to anything but a bunch of assassinations.
hells high 676 Posted February 8, 2014 I think I'll try playing on your server. Hardcore just means first first person view only, right? Also... Is there actually a book exchange? The name gave me a good laugh, since I can't really imagine a book exchange in Day Z amounting to anything but a bunch of assassinations. Cool thanks! Yes Hardcore just means first person only. I find it more immersive and more tense, since you can't just freelook over a wall and see whats on the other side. And no, no real book exchange. :P It was meant to make people chuckle, kinda stemmed from my friends and I joking about setting up a library at the Balota hangars. The server has actually become quite popular, even had people message me if it was bugged as there aren't too many Hardcores that fill up that I've seen. Hovers around 30-40 a lot of the time which is great! I guess the hole I filled for myself filled for a few others too.
Master_Catfish 5 Posted February 9, 2014 What an interesting experience playing on this server has been! Last night I played for about 2 hours, during which time I had way more player interaction than ever before (and more dying also). First, I saw 3 dead players in a town and a guy who was decked out in military gear and looting them. I hit him in the back with a crowbar, and he shot me with his M4. After re-spawning, I tagged along with a couple of new players and eventually we ran into 'bob the builder' who shot us all with a revolver. Then on my third spawn I came across what seemed to be two Russian speakers who handcuffed me and then beat me to death.
query_squidier 1 Posted February 10, 2014 Great server, was diggin' it. This guy chased me with a shovel but I outran him into the forest. Then I found a factory, a pipe wrench, a potential victim, and then I fell off the roof. Good server though.
AbductedBySharks 1 Posted February 10, 2014 I've been playing here the last 2 days, its great!I just lagged through one of the rooms in the new shipwreck, and I am in a room with no doors :( other than that, having a great time :D
custombark 16 Posted February 11, 2014 Finally, a low ping hardcore server. Plus a good population. Many thanks.
hells high 676 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) I am actually quite surprised at the high population. Generally I don't see a whole lot of near constantly full hardcore servers, in my area anyway. Sometimes even have trouble joining it myself. If you guys keep playing on it, I will keep running it. :] I've met a lot of regulars already, and had quite a few people add me on Steam to say they enjoy playing on the server. Its pretty cool, I guess we'll see where this goes further into the game's development. Cheers! Edit: There's a Steam group as well if you like. Artophwar 42 Posted February 13, 2014 Met some really friendly guys on this server earlier. Here is the story. I joined the server and just spawned, it had been up for a while so every town I went to on my trip up north was already looted. I had logged on as the sun was setting so it got dark pretty fast and I still had no food, no gear. I keep on pushing up north hoping I can find something, anything to eat that isnt rotten. I start getting the message that Im dying of starvation and think this is an unfortunate start to my new Hardcore character when off in the distance I see 3 flashlights. I run up to them waving and telling them Im friendly and starving to death. They kindly drop some rice for me and I start munching down while they keep asking me if I need anything else. I thanked them for the rice and asked if I could tag along. We stayed together for a while exploring the server at night, and it was actually pretty cool with the flashlight/headlamps lighting up the way. Anyway it was a lucky encounter because the server was mostly empty as people were leaving once it got dark. There were only 4 other people on the server besides me and I happened to run into three of them as I was about to starve to death in pretty much the middle of nowhere. They are all on my friends list now.
PhilB 230 Posted February 14, 2014 Hey, I've been playing this server too!Hopefully the pop stays high.Ha, I got all excited at the server name and made my way back to Balota from up north with a dozen+ books. Eventually got killed on another server in Cherno. As I'm dead listening to the guy loot my body in the menu, I hear him in side chat, "Why the fuck you got so many books?"
oregonized 673 Posted February 14, 2014 Fuck your server! All I wanted was to share my copy of Moby Dick with everyone in the book club!
Caboose187 (DayZ) 3036 Posted February 17, 2014 I've had your server in my favorites list since I first played on it. It's one of the better and more populated HC servers and I really have a good time on it. Lots of good fire fights all over the map and not too many douchebags. Good job
Hasselhoff92 22 Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Been playing on the server the last couple days. Met some friendly and some not so friendly people. Fun server. Public service announcement: I learned to stay off the roof tops in Chapaevsk. I have been killed by snipers three consecutive days on the same roof of one of the office buildings. First time no problem DayZ life, second day hmmm coincidence?, third day (tonight) testing for science...death in a hail of bullets from multiple directions coming from the surrounding apartments. Conclusion, I shall leave your roof tops alone. Edited February 18, 2014 by Hasselhoff92
hells high 676 Posted February 22, 2014 Hey guys! The current billing cycle is coming to a close (9 days left). Starting this server was a bit of an experiment to see how a west coast hardcore would go down, and just to give me a place to play. The response has been great and the server is constantly so full that I often have a hard time getting in myself! However I don't know how long I can keep it running on my own, as $100 a month is a relatively big expense. So if you really enjoy the server, would like to see it continue, AND have a bit of extra cash that you would like to donate, please head over to the Multiplay Clan-Pay area by clicking my signature. Any little bit would help keep the Balota Book Exchange open for all your book, bean, and bullet needs! This money all goes right to the Clan-Pay account and is directly credited towards the next server bill. Thanks again for playing everybody! Also don't forget to join the Steam group! Cheers, HH
oregonized 673 Posted February 22, 2014 Doh, I hope you can get donations to keep the server up. It really is one of the best US West Hardcore servers.
PhilB 230 Posted February 23, 2014 Right, 12 pounds. Or in our language, dropped 15 your way. Hope that helps and maybe gets the ball rollin' for some others to provide. Question-Is it perm daylight? Can't remember but thinking maybe it is. If so, here's vote #1 for normal day/night cycle. Westcoast is hardcore, ya dig?

Thank you so much, it definitely helps! The server runs default the way it came from Multiplay, restarting every 4 hours. I'm not 100% sure if its dynamic depending on the amount of players, but I've definitely played at night usually when there are very few players on.

hells high 676 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) love the server mate, really enjoy playing on it Thank you! Okay guys, the server has been renewed for another month because of Mr. PhilB's generous donation. However it will likely be the last if I don't receive more help with the bills, as I am not a clan with a server that runs ads or anything like that. Hoping this doesn't come across as doom and gloom and pitiful begging, it's just the way it is. Most rented servers will subsist through either donations or ad revenue, and I just ain't rich enough to do it myself. :P Otherwise the server seems to be doing quite well, population still running high the majority of the time and people still add me to tell me they enjoy it. timoseewho 23 Posted February 26, 2014 (edited) great server, for me, it's either this or weiRds i've heard stories of people's chars resetting when they don't join a provider's official server (ones with names like [location] #-###) so i initially had no idea that your server was also provided by MPGS. i guess my question is this, are there 3 types of servers atm? the official #-### ones, official rented ones with name changed (your server), and somehow private servers set up by random people which don't have a good connection to the central hive? if so, how can you tell if a certain server is set up privately?
