Future fps / optimization

Recommended Posts

I realise this has probably been asked a dozen times already, I spent a fair amount of time googling but without finding a satisfying answer I decided to just make a new thread about this

I'm running DayZ SA with about 20-45 fps (mostly everything on low, Ive played with the text files too, and noticed that I can put textures and even shadows on high without an fps drop, but anything from the rendering settings lowers fps), that depends largely on where I am. Woods usually highest, but in larger towns it drops down drastically. I never played ArmA 2 properly, my brother had it installed on this PC and I remember him playing it with quite high settings. I understand these games play differently, there's plenty more for DayZ to load (zombies, all the loot, etc) but that's pretty much where my knowledge depletes. I'm not an expert on computer hardware, in other words :D

My specs are:

AMD phenom II x4 955 3.2 GHz processor

8 GB RAM

64 bit windows 7

ATI Radeon HD 6800 graphics card (im not 100% sure where to check its memory but running dxdiag it said 4000 MB so Ill go with that)

Im aware my pc is getting a bit old, and its never been high end at all. but can I expect the fps to stay the same even in release or is there a dev or an expert that could give me some hope i'll be able to reach higher fps in the future? :) I get 40 fps while the game looks pretty good in some areas and I think thats fantastic, but its kinda sucky (though I can understand the reasons why lol) that I get really kinda stuttery in bigger areas. But those areas are usually where other people are too, so it'd be fantastic to be able to react the same speed as they :D

in other news, I love this game :D Playing alone right now, but i wish i had someone to play with. Been trying to drag my friends along but they say the game feels too stressful. :(

Overclock your system, get a program that shows current FPS, wack settings on high then tone down from there. Ideally find a dead server and go to cherno. Also worth using something to cancel background applications

Well, I am sure they will optimize it later on, just gotta put the patience boots on.  :P

Little tip, the ARMA 2 and 2.5 engines are all optimized for Intel/Nvidia technology.

yeah i'm pretty sure next time I either replace lot of parts or get a new pc, i'll get nvidia, since a lot more games seem to be better optimized for it. :P also Im happy first poster went through trouble to post facepalming overused img, while i clearly said I couldnt find a satisfying answer.

anyway, thanks for replies :) About overclocking, like I said i'm no expert on hardware, just know some basics, I'm afraid of frying my system for a video game :P But maybe i'll look into that and do things the safe way.

You can always bump up the multiplier on that 955BE.  All the Black editions have unlocked multi.  I got a 965BE 3.4ghz but it easly does 3.7 with no voltage increase.  Alot will depend on your motherboard and cooling solution.

I am running a 965 BE as well and have it cranked up to 4.1GHz..  Watercooled tho.. along with my GPU's.

so would you say I need to upgrade my pc for DayZ or can I have some hopes on the future optimizations?

also I don't have the BE, nor a lot of money to spend atm :P but if I were to, should I get the BE? and maybe better cooling since my fans kinda shitty
