Mosin + M4 atm is the optimal loadout statistically IMO.

You can carry two if you put one in your hands.

Personally, I love the M4 + SKS combo.  While I do love the Mosin and it's excellent sniping ability, I like taking the fight up-close and personal, while also being able to have a good firefight at range as well.  That's where the SKS can shine. 3 of my clanmates and I got into a nice firefight with 3-4 others using my SKS w/ PU scope attached up in Stary.  I was able to kill one of them at decent range with the SKS, while wounding another.  My other clanmates I was with were able to take care of business and kill the rest of them.  

 

Really taking a liking to the SKS..

Yes, I've managed to stay alive with my M4 + SKS for the last 2 days now.  The firefight I told in the above post was a pretty close call for me though, as I was hit and bleed out a good bit before dispatching the 'bandits'.  One of my clanmates was bandaging me while I was shooting away.  :)

It's all about that double barrel! People underestimate it currently because of the woeful inaccuracy of the sawed off version, but it's actually a force to be reckoned with.

While the magnum has the same one hit firepower at close range, the buckshot of the shotgun leaves more room for user error in those scary, point blank encounters.

Also, it makes dealing with sprinting freshspawns a bit more manageable.
