What do we really want as far as Day/Night?

Daytime/Nighttime cycle and quality

111 members have voted

  1. 1. What do YOU want the time cycle to be at release?

    • Leave it the same. 1:1 with the real world. Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      37
    • Compress it slightly. May still be a need for Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      17
    • Compress it to include multiple realistic day/night cycles per rolling 24 hour period. Ratio to be determined, little to no need for Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      57
  2. 2. What is your ideal darkness?

    • Leave it pitch black at night, and lock gamma/brightness or otherwise force players to experience the dark.
      23
    • Leave it pitch black with current gamma options. Players CAN brighten their game for free night vision.
      4
    • Lighten nighttime slightly, so nearby objects have an outline. Lock Gamma/Prevent increased visibility.
      66
    • Lighten nighttime slightly, except with current gamma options.
      13
    • Lighten the game Significantly, virtually eliminating the threat of darkness as we know it currently.

All I know is that I have never jumped into a almost full server yet and it was night time...They fix some lighting issues that might change. (flashlight illumination and so on)

Yeah the lighting needs to be fixed first, but otherwise I like night and kind of feel exposed in the daylight.

At night you should be able to see at least 20 meters around you minimum with no moon.

Dark interiors should let you see in at least a 5 meter radius to simulate the sense of touch since we can't feel our surrounding environment.

I would like to see a condensed day/night cycle so I can experience both day an night when I play since I usually play at the same time every day.

Gamma/Brightness settings should be controlled when creating your profile, to change them you would have to reset your profile killing your character

Night visibility at 20 metres outside with no moon would be reasonable, I think, though I would go less. 10ish.

Inside, depending on moon cycle and window/door states/presence, 1-3m. Absolute darkness beyond a perimetre gradient on your vision that sharply darkens from shadow to full black. (Basically: Around where your vision is clear, it tapers off to complete darkness, rather than just being cut off at a certain distance).

The gamma/brightness idea isn't so bad, though some/a lot of people are going to be willing to deal with shit graphics in order to maintain permanent night vision, and for this reason I don't like it. However, if there were to be a reasonable cap on how high one's gamma can go (take a look at different monitor specs, see what is necessary to play, make that the max gamma setting), it could work.

About cycles, my thought is that it has to be slightly compressed, ratio about 1:2. Leaving

to be 1:1 brings issues: if i use to play videogames at night, i would always play darkness

and vice-versa. Furthermore, i would make cycles someway async with real time world, to avoid

that, for example,  at 16pm is always dark.

Basically, i think that we should NOT know where the cycle would be before logging in. This is quite

impossible, so at least try and make it harder to guess

I voted 1st option on gamma: pure darkness, no gamma correction. Enjoy the dark or play cod ;)

I was going to reply then I read this as one of the options

"Lighten the game Significantly, virtually eliminating the threat of darkness as we know it currently."

This is a very leading answer, the phrase "virtually eliminating the threat of darkness as we know it currently" is an opinion, and while I might agree with it for a poll to work properly it should be neutral. I suggest changing the last option to just.

"Lighten the game significantly"

You can't express the second part without opinion bias creeping in.

8 hour cycles, allows you to play day today and if you go on the same time tomorrow, it will be night. allowing for people who can only get a certain time of day to play, to experience both day and night.

It's not really biased, so much as pointing out the implications of that particular option. Without opaque darkness, the threat the night presents is knocked down to a completely different level. You might not be able to see much in night-like darkness such as you see in Epoch and the like, and this interferes with shooting... but when things are pitch black, you actually run the very real risk of screwing up no matter what you do. It's a completely different threat. It adds another element of unavoidable difficulty. I cannot see pointing this out as a thing of opinion.

I love compressed cycles so I can actually watch the sun come up or down.  I respawned once near dusk, and it was trippy to watch the light slowly fade to black on me while I snuck through the woods.  Then the server kicked me and reset and it was high noon when I logged back in standing on someone's doorstep like a Mormon!

As far as brightness goes, I love that lack of light really translates to pitch black.  IRL, dark is freaking dark.  But as many point out, night isn't always that dark.  A full moon night is pretty damn bright, and it's really those new moons or being enshrouded in forest or a dark building that black out your vision.

I think a compressed day/night cycle with correspondingly compressed moon phases and associated brightness changes is perfect.  It opens up different gameplay elements to people, while retaining the feel of "this is the way the world works, survival = deal with it."

uhm after playin more at night time, i changed my darkness vote to option 3.

The actual darkness soon becomes quite unplayable. LIttle OT, but light sources (torch, headtorch, gas lamp, etc.) must be drastically improved to provide an acceptable realism/gameplaybalance.

Id like a 6 or even 4 hours day. Some ppl might day its too short but I dont think it is.

I cant remember playing DayZ more than 4 hours without a break. If I get lucky I could even have some day and some night when only playing 2 hours. Just so you know minecraft days are 20 minutes long. So DayZ days would be 12 times longer.

And I want to be able to see whats around me when its night. In reallife you got other senes but in DayZ we can only see and hear. Still very dark nights. No idea whats that thing across the street. But when I bump into it I do.

Also increase the zombies in night..or zombies become more aggressive at night

Dont think this will happen. The zombies are acctualy infected humans. At night they will be even less aggresive.. well some kind of.. because they cant see you just like you cant see them.

Hum...you are right..the less aggressive  zombie at night seems more realistic.

Option 3 and option 3.

I would like to see some nightvision goggles for sure... Also light up the streets a little bit more, not all the lights, some of them are broken, or can be broken to shut down the light to scare other players, fuck up the electric system of the town lol

I think before some sort of super-intense blackness is implemented in the game, the flashlights-shining-directly-through-walls problem (which I haven't actually experienced, but have heard about) should be fixed. Unless it has. (new player, here, not super familliar with night-time play.)
