New player with some questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just picked up Dayz SA a few days ago and really enjoying it, but I have a few questions that I cannot seem to find any answers to...Ive tried searching and found some almost related information, but havent seen anything just yet that specifically answers my questions.

1. Does power running (Double tap W) Make you more tired? use energy? make you need to eat more? Ive been unable to see any difference, but I'm sure it must do?

2. Loot.  I have seen there is much "discussion" on this subject :) How do I know when a server has restarted?  Yesterday I spawned just outside solnichy, and every door was shut, I assumed the server had just restarted.  I checked 3 houses and there was absoloutely nothing there, Then I got noticed by a Zed.  He chased me for a while and I picked up 5 more (Yes, 5 more) chasing me through Solnichy. More Zed's than I've ever seen in this game.  I ran north to the industrial area, I'm not sure if the others followed me or I was just unlucky, but I was being followed there too.  I decided to take my chances and just try and run round the place checking for weapons and packs etc with my tails.  By the end of it, I'd left the factory having found a crowbar and a piece of rope (whats this for?) and thats it! And I had seven zombies chasing me.  Is this a normal level of loot spawn?  Is this a normal level of Zed spawn on server restart? Just so I know what to expect.  Im using the map, but I'm not sure what the definition of a low, medium and high swawn is (Is it the amount of loot, or the likelyhood of loot spawning?)

3. Canned beans.  Three times now I've died of starvation with beans in my inventory, and nothing to open them with.  I've seen people are discussing this, but I thought I'd get my two cents in.  If I was starving to death, I Would throw a tin of beans on the floor and stamp on it / Hit it with a rock / hit it with a spanner / hit it with my head to get it open.  I' m all up for realism but sprinting around looking for something sharp while you have a can of food in your hands that the game won't let you open seems a bit silly.  How about a "Throw on the ground" option, that creates a "spilled beans" item in the vicinity that you can then pick up for 25% food?

4.  I was playing last night and had a good game going.  I had lots of food, a cool clown mask, a knife, and a blood bag + a backpack.  I got disconnected from the server, and logged back in to what I assumed was the same server, but somehow ended up on a totally different character (not fresh spawn)  I assume I was playing on a different Hive. How many hives are there? Is there any way to find this guy again?

5. Killing Zeds - So far I've avoided them like the plague unless Im a fresh spawn who finds an early weapon.  So far I've found two guns and no ammunition and I've been playing for maybe 14 hours solid.  I got close to the army base once, but got KOS by some douchebag.  First lesson learnt - don't stop in the open on a road 1km outside a military base!  Is it safe to melee them? I mean, if they hit you it just seems to make you bleed.  As long as you have bandages this is ok right? Is there any other impact? Do you need to eat more to regain the blood that you lost?

6.Rotten fruit.  I've eaten it a couple of times.  It seems to bring you back from the brink of starvation for about 3 minutes and that's it. Is it even worth picking up? What's the implications of eating it?

I'm sure I'll have lots more questions, I'm enjoying the game.  FInding it frustrating and engrossing at the moment; IT really does feel very apocalyptic.  The lack of food and loot is annoying me, but I'm sure that will get better as I learn what to look for.  Not being able to run up hills is also very annoying, and getting stuck in doorways and at the bottom of stairs is also annoying.  Should I be reporting this stuff? (E.g yesterday I couldn't get into a castle on account of a single step at its doorway.  I had to "Step over" to get in.  It worked, but I should have just been able to walk up it.

Also, shoes.  I Find nothing but shoes everywhere I go.  Whats the difference? Pristine, worn, tennis shoes, hiking boots, working boots, whats the differences between them?

1 - Sprinting makes you thirsty and uses up energy me thinks

2 - Loot spawns are going to be fixed i think, though stuff should still be quite hard to find.

3 - I agree if you were starving and had a can of beans in your hand you would find a way to smash it open

4 - There are Hardcore and Regular hives (not sure if implemented yet)

5 - Get a fire axe and Zeds will not be a problem (until they up the numbers). Strafe around and one hit them to avoid getting slashed

6 - Rotten fruit can give food poisoning

7 - Dont think shoe qualities are in yet but i imagine the condition means how often you will have to find new shoes and whether your feet get damaged.

1. not 100% sure but i think it does NOT drain more energy. maybe that's a feature being implemented in the future, but at the moment it feels like it does not make any difference

2. entry houses/buildings does not tell anything. a lot people close them after entering / leaving to pretend  that there has nobody been. if there have been a lot of zeds that would mean that nobody else has been there or at least he/they did not kill the zeds (maybe run just like you did). not in every building is loot.. there is a drop-chance and entering houses etc. does not give you guaranteed loot. small/medium/big loot locations mean the likelyhood of spawning as far as i know. just keep on searching, experience will come with the time. try heading to a military base but be VERY (!!!) careful. a lot players/campers are around there and they shoot you without asking. check how much players are on the server by pressing "p".

3. yes. that sucks. but: try using a knife, screwdriver etc.. that works. even axes work. if not: drink soda, they also replenish energy (food)

further information here (i highly recommend you to watch the full video, it is VERY VERY helpful. take the 24 minutes time and watch it !!!!):

4. if you disconnect (or get disconnected because of server restart) then there's no need in going onto the same server again. your character will be saved and you can play on every other server with the exactly same character. if it bugs (other loot, new spawn, ...) while going onto a server then just disconnect, wait 5 minutes (go toilet, have some porn, smoke a cig) and join again. there are no different hives. hardcore/regular just means whether you can use 3rd person view or not at the moment. you can play with the same character on both kind of servers imo

5. yes it is safe to meele them. but: only with axe (black one is the weaker: 1-2 hits for a zombie, or fireworker-axe (red one): 1 hit zombie). dont use other meele weapons than axes, thats pointless and you will get hit too often. if you are bleeding and you dont have any rags, then undress your t-shirt, rightlick it in inventory and "tear to rags".

6. dont eeat rotten fruit even if near to starving. it makes you sick and only gives a very very small amount of energy/water. dotn pick them up, its just wasting time and inventory-space

if you have more questions dont hesitate to message me, i try helping if i can, though im not the 10000% experienced, ultry pro geek player ;)

the response to 4 is correct there are different characters for hardcore and regular, im also fairly certain the shoe status is not yet been implemented

Well I don't know the answers to all your questions but some of them:

4) hardcore and regular servers are on different hives, that means you will have separate characters for these.

6) Just dont eat it, I think it can make you sick.

5) can kill them with 1 blow from an axe, otherwise avoid melee.

3) Really no reason to starve once you get the hang of where the loot spawns, you can open cans with some things like screwdrivers and axes, but really this isn't an issue once you're more familiar with the map.

2) most servers restart on a 4 hour schedule or sooner, if the server you're on seems to have no loot then its probably due a restart, so just hang around, or head inland where most of the loot is untouched.  Its always been a quirk of the spawning tables that items tend to group, so you maybe be looking for X for ages then come across 3 within a few minutes.  Also certain loot items spawn only is specific places, you can look forever for ammo and never find it if you're not looking in the right places, look in the right places and you will have more than you could need.

one more thing: if you have nothing to lose (no loot, fresh spawn) and you are near the coast: head to cherno. start looting there, you can find IMMENSE amounts of food+drinks there. nobody needs to starve in dayz at the moment ;) just loot there. but be aware: very dangerous there. more zombies + a lot players also looting / camping / KoS there. but still the best place to gear up the most important things at the beginning, after that head to military bases ;)

1. Take a look at merinos in-depth guides pinned at the top of this forum. Right now energy/water use is based on active or not.

2. Loot is a little wonky right now. Before the current patch most residential houses had loot. Now I skip them entirely since none do. You need to find what type of places currently drops loot and stick to those only to save time.

3. There are axes, can openers, screwdrivers, and other things to open cans. Non-can openers spill food though.

4. Two hives, regular and hardcore.

5. My computer can barely play dayz. Fire axe is a one hit kill. I stick to only those when try to melee zombies.

6. Never eat rotten fruit, you can get sick and die.

Most important thing is explore and find out what building types currently drop items.

1. No, atm there are only two states in the game, standing still and moving.  Crawling consumes just as much energy as sprinting.

2. You know a server restarts when your game disconnects and you have to connect again.  Open doors = no loot.

3. easy to open cans, axes, knives, screw drivers, hack saws, there is no reason to starve unless you suck at life.

4. Hardcore and regular hives. (don't server hop unless you fail at life and want everyone to know how much you suck at life)

5. Zeds. splitting axe two body shots or one headshot, fireaxe one shot even if you hit it on the foot, no reason to use guns on zombies yet unless you suck at life, only wasting ammo and letting every bandit close by know where you are.

6. Eating rotten food means you suck at life,

7. Shoes, pick up what you like, i like the violet jogging shoes and the redpunk military boots, no difference between them yet.  Ruined shoes looks really scruffy but wearing them won't make you suck at life.

So you've already had a number of replies to this one, I can only add this link: http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1w7nmv/a_guide_to_looting_and_buildings/

And I'll leave you with a list of towns/villages that I would definitely recommend paying a visit:

  • Polana
  • Dolina
  • Novy Sobor - Stary Sobor - Kabanino (careful, lot's of people go here for loot)
  • Zelenogorsk
  • Pustoshka

If you don't know where to go, there's allways the map

Good luck, maybe we'll run into each other sometime.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses guys.  Ive yet to find a fire axe yet.  All Ive found is copious amounts of crow bars and shovels, a couple of baseball bats, the odd pipe wrench and a couple of smaller wrenches.  IS tehre a particular place that fire axes spawn? It'd be really handy to be able to kill zeds easily!

I don't know what happened with my last game then.  I wasted two hours on it.  I was playing with one guy who was very hungry when I quit the game (With a can of beans in hand of course)

I logged back in and got fresh spawn so I presume he had died of starvation.  I played for a few hours, collected stuff, then when I logged back in again I was back on the guy who was starving again.  I wasnt on a hardcore server as i play pretty exclusively third person!

So basically the consensus for now seems to be ignore houses and go straight for the big areas but be careful and don't stick around?

So far I've been going to the smaller settlements in land and checking every house...and not finding much!  As I say, I've never had a fire axe.  I generally carry crowbars, as they are all I Can find.  I think I might try finding a night server and going into cherno or something, just so I can get the hang of searching for loot without everyone trying to kill me... (Flame suit on!)

Thanks very much for the extensive and very fast replies guys!  Anyone here UK Based and wants a buddy thats not going to try and kill them? :)

Have been to zelenogorsk, novy, stary, and dolina.  I was on my way from Novy / Stary to the military base to the east with lots of stoage, food, saline IV, blood bag, motorcycle helmet etc (most loot ive ever had) when I stopped to answer a skype call standing in the middle of a road.  When I alt tabbed back into game, there was a guy in front of me.  I said "Woah hi I didnt see you there" On voice, then he pulled his gun and shot me in the face...

Thanks for the tips though!

fire axes can be found pretty often at military bases (check the barack which has a 2nd floor, go upstars and behind the stairs there are always meele weapons, with a bit of luck a fireaxe ;) )

My suggestion...  If you don't mind a little "outside game cheating" use the http://dayzdb.com/ map, filter out the low occurrence markers (small dots).  Hit up every hopital/red brink building you run into.  Hit up every large dot location you find.  Squares are decent too... Pay attention to spawn locations, they don't vary much.  Many residential houses only spawn stuff in the porch or entryway, saving you the time going upstairs etc.  You will quickly learn the houses to hit up and which to pass on, I generally pass on ANY rough wood cabin like home, never found anything in there.  The map will show cars as spawn location, from what I have seen and heard stuff used to spawn in there but after the last patch they are empty (I am a noob myself).

Go to low pop servers, raid the medic houses, get some food, find a well and drink then head inland to smaller places.

Any axe is more then enough for zombies, crowbar/shovel is ok if you learn how to dodge their attacks.  Construction sites and medic houses have axes (any axe but fire is best).  Pretty much any red square on the map will have a high probability for weapons.

Be careful with zed, if they face you they will attack and can see long distances trough walls.  So if a zed if facing a house and you think you are crafty and go in the back door there is a decent chance it will see you and attack through walls... have died a few times this way.

Don't EVER eat rotten food... as a matter of fact I would avoid all raw food entirely unless you have to.  They don't give much health and it is possible other players have poisoned them.

Drink/eat as much as you can, till really stuffed (not just stuffed).  Though if you are hungry and only have water try and save a little stomach space for food when you find it.  Know that when it tells you "are hungry" you literally are at less then 20% energy.  Eat everything no point in carrying food right now.

So I can just keep eating as much as I want? Until my stomach is full? is there any way to see energy levels? How much does food refill? (Will i be eating three cans of beans to fill myself or just one?)

Ive just been raiding Elektro, that was fun. I think the server was close to restart as most of the doors were closed.  The place was crawling with other players and it got looted out fast.  We stayed out of each others way though (I dont think they even saw me to be honest) and now I'm in the outskirts of elektro with a canteen, two cans of beans, a can of tuna, a transmitter (not sure what its for) a knife, a screwdriver, a crowbar (havent found an axe) and a few other misc items (Including the fabled can opener!!!)

Im thinking eat my food till im full, fill up my canteen, go raiding some more to stock up on food and then head inland.... Wish me luck people!

I'm going to answer my own questions for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread.

1. At the moment, sprinting uses the same energy as running.

2. Concentrate on the larger loot spawns, there is a lot more useful stuff there. Stay moving, and if you spot another player, either sprint straight for some trees, or pop around a corner if he has not seen you.  You can see if he has a gun, which helps make your decision for you.

3. Screwdrivers/knives etc are pretty common.  I did a loot run through half of elektro and found about 6 or 7 things to open beans with.

4. Not sure on this one, bug I guess

5. You can kill zeds with crowbar etc, but you more than likely will end up bleeding etc.  Safest bet is to ignore them until you find a fire axe. After this, they are quite easy to sneak up behind and pop in the back of the head.

6. Dont eat rotten fruit, ever.  There IS plenty of food if you know where to look.

rage.

Just logged into a server with a 0 player count.  Stood there trying to fill my canteen from a well, it would not fill.  The only option was to drink water.

Within 30 seconds 3 guys came running around the corner and shot me dead. WTF.

Only think I would add... any axe is a great weapon against zombies... splitting and fire both one hit kill them.

Yes with any other weapon you will bleed alot until you get at the circle dodge wack zed on the head technique.

Once I learned hot to regen health/blood (eat and drink everything until it shows healthyhealing status in inventory screen), I died a few times slow deaths due to each engagement with zombies and bleeding due to not having an axe.

Ok so now I have a fire axe and plenty of food. I watched the video on the way food etc works.  Im struggling to understand though, is it worth eating past the healthy status? It seems I can fill my energy reserves more than I can my hydration reserves, and energy does not need to be full in order to be healthy, but once I am healthy, am I not better off not eating until I take more damage and don't go back to the healing status?

I cant see the point of eating / drinking EVERYTHING I find when my stomach is almost stuffed all the time and I am healthy? How can I tell when my energy is full, is that possible?

You can't really tell when energy is full, there are 2 levels of blood/health regen apparently.  Yes you are right you can eat more then you can drink, I think they calculated full energy will last something like 20 hours where as full hydration lasts 4 hours.

The idea to eat everything is that it loosens up space in your inventory.  Since you can store sooo much energy, may as well store it in your belly instead of your backpack.  Sure keep a rice just in case but if you eat everything chances are you won't ever need it, just remember to drink a full canteen after rice or do it near a water pump.  The cans of food doesn't give nearly the energy bang as rice but it does give you hydration which you almost always can use.

You will find that once you get to a certain point, you really don't search every house etc mainly because you don't need to because of a full stomach and because you probably will be in more risky areas trying not to get shot.

that happens when you join a server which has just been restarted. maybe it had 0 players, but i guess the ping was pretty low (< 60~) and most likeley even daytime (server-time between 9-18)

restarted servers with low ping and daytime fill VERY fast.. always check player-count after joining such servers (press p) and watch out
