It'd be ludicrous to think there WONT be a functioning train

Good luck with that.

That's fine, a few of my clan mates would be able to translate :)

From a design perspective, it'd be absolutely pointless to tie up Ivan with the task of closing the loop of the train tracks to nowhere of Chernarus past if there was no larger plan in mind.

Imagine if GTA V had a circular train loop and no functional train. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

I do think it is a very late development feature that might even be added in beta, and will not be mentioned for a good long time. But choo choo! It's on the way for sure IMO.

Thoughts?

When asked about end game progression on reddit, Rocket said they had end game progression in mind, and a working train, along with building fortifications were part of the asker's question.

I would personally be interested in seeing massive group projects that happen in a long term sense relative to a single server. Like, persistent.

Perhaps you would have to build the train, with parts from all over chernarus

Additionally, I think occupying homes would be a GREAT mechanic for this game. You get to occupy a single house, on a single server, by boarding it up and installing locks on the doors. Then, you are privy to all loot that spawns inside that house on that server, as no one can enter it.

There would of course need to be a system for taking breaking and entering, advanced security, and taking homes from players.

Who would be operating the train? If it ran off of electricity, why does only the train have electricity? If players could fix it and drive it, how would they turn it around once it got to the other corner of the map?

How is babby formed?

Hmm, I could see a working train being worked in. Just the cab though maybe.

Or one of these: handcar.jpg

I'd give Rocket and extra £10 to go on one of these with my friend across the whole map.

I could see handcars but not a full locomotive in the future.

Its complex, it needs a lot of fuel, and if you hit a corner going too fast you're gonna have a bad time.

The electric train thing was implying that it would be automated. (which doesn't make sense). Even if it could be fixed, what's the point? You're a big slow target that makes a lot of noise that can either stop or go, and can only travel between two points.

I don't think that it's smart to ride it either, but hey, why not?

Not a closed circuit/circle, its a branch line with it's terminus North West of Lopatino with the transfer line somewhere west of Kamenka (where it'll probably meet up with another rail system).  It's also a diesel operation (no steam facilities, IE no water towers or coaling depots. Or infrastructure for an electric line, IE no overhead gantry or third rail.)  Trust me, I'm an Engineer Brakeman.

That being said, the only thing stopping players from using the rail system would be on the Devs end of getting the trains working right/realistically, and actually repairing/operating the locomotives.  (Seriously, who here knows how to even turn one ON, raise your hands.  Hell I barely know how to turn the one I actively work with on.)

Who here knows how to turn on a helicopter?

Thanks for dropping the knowledge though.

As I see it, the main flaw in the anti-train argument is that it assumes most people are not willing to fumble around and fuck it up for countless hours trying to figure out how to start the train.

It's honestly just the kind of daunting, group-minded endeavor that could give us a reason to band together. Don't dismiss it cause "it's too hard."

I don't mean to sound anti-train, but we need to think about this realistically.  The main reason they started with the Take On Helicopters engine (what everyone refered to as Arma2.5) before it evolved into the DayZ engine was so Helis would be much more complex to start up and fly (I got the demo, and actually bought it when it was on sale, if they make trains as realistic to start as helis I'll be happy).  There are many factors working against the trains though, yet also a few factors working for them.  It's very likely the trains would actually be in running condition as long as no one screwed with them during the outbreak, as compared to a car which would probably have been looted or broken into.

I could definitely see Clans or groups holding the rail lines and using one of the locos and a few wagons (I believe is the proper term for European cars) to ferry supplies and people around to map.  If they add 'bulk' resources to the map for base building (logs, lumber, plywood, cement, rocks, ect) locos with a wagon attached could be one of the ways of transporting that around.  A clan rolls into Electro, secures the train yard and loads up building supplies into a boxcar/flatcar, picks up a tanker in Cherno and fills it with fuel at stops along the line.  Get in a fight with a group of bandits/rival clan that has another train they're using, put that train on a siding (solnichny) then go to Berezino where another clan memeber is waiting with a truck to haul off the building supplies they gathered to the site of their base.  Or hell, a Hero could load up a passenger car with medical supplies and roam the lines looking for people to help.

Pretty much, the SIMPLEST Diesel locos have at least 4 important levers (not counting what you need to do to actually get it running), Engine Brake, Train Brake, Reverser, Throttle. with the brakes and throttle looking very similar.  Oh, and you apply pressure to the Train Brake to release the brakes, and apply pressure to the engine brake to apply the brakes.  Keep that in mind.

WRONG! simplest Diesel locos that use diesel engine to make power to electric engines (usually used as maintanance trains) would only need one control wheel to make it move and stop when engine is running and train brakes are off. driving a train build after 70s-80s is not that hard, true electric trains are even easier.

Then again Steam locomotive is something that average Joe would be overwhelmed to make it work.

Edit:

Just remembered that diesel Minecart locos are even easier. 2 buttons and 2 levers. Warmup, start, Throttle lever and brake lever

Not to mention the reuqired track maintenance. Railroad tracks gets overgrown very quickly without constant usage and service.

The Chernarus rail network isn't electrified, so it'd have to be a diesel locomotive. And why would you have to turn around?

I actually like the idea of a train. The fight to get it would be insane... Also imagine barricading the track and ambushing the train with a group of friends, would be epic!

Trains would give those who dont have access to vehicles a way to travel the coast. Especially if they introduce stamina and a 2km trek to cherno or electro isnt 5 minutes anymore. Idk i think theres a lot of cool stuff that can happen with this idea.

Diesel.

Reverse gear.

I'd agree, but then again, these old diesel powered trains will run 50 years straight with out much maintenance... The train would be like choppers : a pain in the arse to refuel :D

I agree. I operate cranes for a living, and by far my favourite to operate are the old friction cranes. They're like fucking tanks. Change a band/belt here and there and the oil regularly and you've got a profit making machine.

Don't get me wrong, I love the air conditioning/heater in the 2010 Manitowoc 2250 I run on a daily basis, but when it comes to reliability, the older the better

Fun fact: Most new cranes are only designed to be in service for ten years. Some of them can be completely stripped and rebuilt after ten years, but most manufacturers now just take the old crane and use it as a credit for the company buying the new crane. The old friction type cranes from the 50s, 60s and 70s will probably last another 50 years if kept up to par on maintenance!

Back on topic, I personally feel that the train tracks are more of a navigational aid like someone else mentioned earlier. I can't really see the trains being operated again, especially this early into an apocalypse.

There will be power plants that will be held by clans, barricaded bases if you will.  So whomever controls the power plants controls the train.  I feel there will be an economy built around the train if and when its implemented just as there is and was in real life.
