New Patch - Transmitter / Walkie-Talkie

Recommended Posts

So in the latest patch, unannounced, the team dropped in the functionality for walkie-talkies (currently named 'transmitter').

link

A 'transmitter' can both broadcast and receive signals on whichever frequency you choose, effective at up-to 1000 meters.

I can't think off that many situations where this would actually be useful or effective, but it does seem to have one good use - trolling.

Turn on your transmitter and drop it on the roof of the Elektro office/school building. Take cover in the surrounding 'sniper hill' with a Mosin and you can troll people in the center of town while keeping a safe-distance.

Any other, more practical uses?

How is this trolling if you dont have one on you on sniper hill? Do you talk in direct and they hear it all the way over there or what, plz explain and wrent radio stations ment to be in?

I don't even think that would work overly well as the other person would need one tuned to your signal for it to actually work, I've been having a hard time finding bags in my last couple of lives, so maybe once the hives a fixed and I stop getting a new character every time I connect. I might pick one up, but tbh it'll be the first thing to go in the event my bag is full.

Has anyone actually used one in game? do they work?

As a decoy is the only use I can think of.

like drop one that's switched on in town to lure players out so you can snipe them?

Well there are radios in some houses, and I remember an old video of Rocket turning on a radio station and playing music.

Do these work?  If not you would need 2 walkies.

So technically, you could set a radio to a certain frequency, run up to sniper hil, match that frequency on your walkie, yell for help (or brag about how much ammo you have!!), and then shoot the person who comes in the house!

Backpack can be crafted with burlap sack, rope then add sticks to make bigger

Just to clarify, if you have two 'transmitters', you can tune both into the same frequency, drop one on the floor - and then broadcast to it, from up-to 1000 meters away.

Direct comms only works from a couple hundred meters, not sure exact distance. Anyone know?

I think its much about that feel it gives you when you use the walkie talkie instead of Teamspeak, i am sure the sounds will be nice also.

Another use would be if you meet a guy who needs help and/or is new in the game , you can give him one of the two walkie talkies you have and tell him: that you are on this and this frequenz and if he is in trouble just try to contact you.

this would mean that the range should be more than only 1000 meter.

in RL there are many walkie talkies that do 5000m very easily.

Would most likely be used for traps. Anyone with a brain who wants teamwork will go to teamspeak/vent/some other 3rd party VOIP program. Not a bloody hand-held radio.

Thank god for Teamspeak.

Once a group gets bigger than 6 people I will thank god for walkie talkies !

So you can effectivly communicate with another team when needed. <3

I see ACRE incomming !

not alway's if I run into other random survivors, radios would be rather good particularly when looting town's I find everyone splits up, and I have to stand on the road as a beacon for other members to regroup on.  Having a radio would get around that just fine.

Personally I love the idea of walkie talkies! Wish they had range of atleast 2 - 3 km though.

It would great and realistic tool for communications in groups. If you have more then say 4-5 people on TS, it is becoming mess anyway.

With walkies, you could split those lads into 2 groups, assing radio guy with walkies to each group and they would coordinate.

It's my new goal to find two of these babies and test them!

p.s. vent stands for ventrillo which is alternative to teamspeak or mumble etc.

edit: I see that other good folks feel the same way! Hooray for radios! They could event implement military radio, that kind you have to carry on back and that would ofc have far better range.

You do know there are subchannels and channel-to-channel communication options in most VoIP programs.

1 km is enough since it is a non-military one.

We expanded ACRE massivly when we were playing Arma2 - some people building transmitters on every hill so singal gets extended through whole map.

This will be a huge step, together with the defi(hopefully wot soon ) will give a huge push towards role play for people playing in groups once, as you mentioned bigger radios which u have to carry on your back are implemented.

Medics, radio operators, snipers, .. yeahhhh I am excited :)
