Newb Question about Looting Cars

Okay, I've searched the forum and can't find the answer on this one - am I able to loot cars? If so, how? 

 

I've been up to and around trashed cars in the towns but haven't had any icons pop up to show I could loot them. I've opened a the doors but haven't ever found anything in them - does this just mean the loot's already been taken, or didn't spawn in the first place? Am I going about it the wrong way?

 

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Loot spawns in them but perhaps youve been unlucky or someone has looted before you and not all cars spawn loot only the sedans i think and the police cars

Cars in Dubky (north of Cherno) are sometimes worth checking. I've found two mosins in their front seats.

I found a mosin in the front seat of the car by the lighthouse. Think it was near Elektro.

Not much to loot in cars, just check the trunk.

Not quite true. Open the doors and move in real tight and check proximity. You may need to use crouch. Check each door and the boot. I've found maps, axes, food, soda and water. Also the occasional mosin.

 

Not confirmed, but loot rate for cars may have taken a hit in the latest patch, similar to the general loot nerf.

The hood, trunk, and backseat. I have seen items spawn in all three places.
