To read/watch guides or not to and learn 1st hand?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to Dayz SA as from last night.  I played the mod quite a bit but took an extended break about a year ago.

The new stand alone is looking excellent for an alpha game.

The reason of this thread is:  Do you think one should read some of the excellent community guides on how things work or just play and learn from your own experience?

it seems for me a lot of the fun is working out how things work for yourself.  The game mechanics seem to be well based on real world fundamentals.  Personally I think this will be both more rewarding and extend my interest in the game.  It can of course also be frustrating, but I plan to try this and also not use loot maps etc.  I'm probably at a slight advantage or possibly disadvantage, depending on you view, knowing the map very well being an old time Arma player.

Interested to know what others feel regarding this, so what is your opinion?

See you in the woods!

Uhh.

Read all of the guides. This isn't one of the games you can learn everything without any help.

Not like Minecraft or Terraria or 7 days to die or something. Even 7 days to die needs a lot of learning.

If you wont use the map's, any guides ANY help at all. You will be doomed.

I strongly suggest you to read the guides.

Good luck.

BUT wait there's more...

If you really want to learn everything by yourself, you can do it!

Seems like you've made your mind up. Whatever you feel's more fun, that's what you should do.

...

I learn everything I can about the mechanics that interest me... because for me that's part of the fun.

I ALWAYS like reading the guides or watching tips/hints posted by people on YouTube, I find it really helpful so that I'm not starting the game in a fettle position, wondering what to do, and rocking back and forth or in the case of DayZ not knowing important commands or whatever when coming into contact with another player or zombie.

But I suppose it would be fun just to dive in and play, it's just I personally prefer to have a solid grasp on a game so that my first moments of play are enjoyable.

I suppose i have that from playing Arma for years and having played the mod.  So its not like i don't know how to do the basics.

My first life went south after eating a rotten banana!  Something i quite fond of in real life! LOL but i got sick and ended up with black & white vision and ended up getting knocked unconscious by a Z!  Lesson number one learnt; stay away from rotten fruit.

dont watch guides and dont use the online maps. Assuming you enjoy exploration, orienteering, and learning from the mistakes that get you killed. I started playing the mod with no ARMA or DayZ experience and before dayzDB existed, finding a map and compass was better than a gun.

Learning it yourself is awesome! Fuck the guides (Not literally).

The first times you play it you will hate yourself for not having read any guides, but later it is just so rewarding.

I'd say a combination

There are many good resources out there

But you don't have to read a guide for every step you take, read them after you've played a bit or after you run into a problem, so that you know better what to look for

If you're coming from the Mod, bone up on ther thirst/hunger/sickness stuff here: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/159251-merinos-in-depth-video-guides-updated-jan-15th-understanding-sicknesses-and-surviving-poisoning/. Everything else is close enough to the Mod to make no difference.

If not coming from the Mod, see the above threads and go look at the http://dayzdb.com/map and get your bearings. Or if you like the 'fog of war' type approach, get a copy of this one: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3745/12024194454_3d7beca0b1_o.jpg. (It's a big image 180+ MB, not created by me. I couldn't find the original posters link, but have it mirrored). No labels or loot spawn info. Just the map and building locations.

Either way, just get in game and play!
