Rivers, Canals, Bridges: Survival Resource, Transport Medium, Natural Chokepoints

Recommended Posts

I feel one or two large rivers or man-made canals would be an enormously interesting addition to the landscape of Chernarus. The potential benefits are many and varied.

I would like to suggest some in this thread.

Yes, I have suggested this very strongly and I do believe that water is lacking big time in the map design...

Sorry mate, but rivers have been discussed countless times.

Now, we all want 'em of course, but the thing is that the engine (still) only supports water being at one level, the lakes and ponds are seperate objects (and also only at one level).

VBS3 supports rivers, but I doubt that will ever be implemented in any currently existing BI game.

The only option left would be to create 'fake rivers' that are at the same level as the sea. This is possible, look at fallujah for instance. However, that would require A LOT of work on the map... it would be nice to have, but I really doubt rivers will come.

Maybe in a future map.

This was the exact response I was given as well - it's a damn shame, because I do believe that water transportation would make DayZ so much more fun than it is.

Here was my past thread:

@Lidskjalf

There will be more archipelago added to south-east coast, which will include at least Utes from ArmA 2

and current area of the map will not be containing such naval use rivers, since rivers are already implemented

the way they are. Northern territory doesnt look promising either on the subject, but possible expansions on

western territories are unknown.

I think Rocket decided do scrap the Utes idea and just create a island from scratch. So it will be interesting to see what Ivan comes up with.

My understanding was he scraped the idea of putting the large prison on Utes because it just felt too 'forced', but that Utes itself was going to be in.

Rejoice!

rocket says: "We already have streams. We want to do skyrim style rivers, and they are relatively straightforward for us to do. We'll just need time."

maybe they could sometimes spawn huge zombie hordes, forcing people to fight their way through

A long elegant bridge across a river or uncrossable terrain, or between two cities, would be a AMAZING addition to the map.  A natural choke point, and risky but rewarding place to cross.  Would even be cooler if bridges were destructible by rare demolitions such as semtex or c4(which isn't just American folks, it is worldwide), leaving players to go another way.

Only watch up to 1:45, the rest is just gameplay in the mission.

This is a good example of what can happen at a bridge chokepoint (save for tanks, air vehicles)  A clan is raining hell on forces who are retreating from the bridge.  Surprise Surprise however, the defenders are arming C4/Semtex on the bridge.  BOOM! They detonate the bombs, leaving the aggressors no choice but to go the long way around (maybe several miles away)

Yeah, into rivers where players must make a specific choice whether to head along the stream for a bridge and risk a choke-point or get wet.

Bridges too - Taviana's bridge is (though a bit o.t.t) always a nail-biter. Some more organic stream and river crossing points would also be cool, a couple of fallen tree models etc.

Also, a small thing: footpaths/animal paths. I was a country kid and It's just one of those things that seems really lacking in the woods and fields to me. There is the occasional bit of fairly wide path here and there now but I think, given all the farms, villages (and wildlife to come) there would naturally be far more. Rambling footpaths criss-crossing the map, dissappearing, reappearing, running through woods, over streams... And small animal paths all over the place. There is always a run of beaten- down grass heading across hills on common wild-life pathways. It's just one of those logical, natural things that feels overlooked in the environment. Such paths are also a good way of making one open area of grass distinguishable from the next.

I'd like bridges and highways, so the roads would be more vertical, something like this
