Low CPU usage

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have recently changed my monitoring software to include cpu usage during gameplay and noticed that although my gpu usage is maxed out while playing dayz my cpu usage on all cores is around 20-30%.

This surprises me as things like BF4 max out my gpu and my cpu cores to around 70%,

I always assumed dayz/Arma was cpu intensive.

Anyone else seeing this ?

i5@4.2 HD6850 overclocked

**I forgot to say running on high settings @ 1366x768 gpu max's at 99%**

IIRC then different graphics settings offload different things onto GPU or CPU in the Arma engine... turning down some graphics might relieve some strain from the GPU and move it onto CPU

I'm pretty sure when shadows is set to very high it uses the CPU (i could be wrong going by memory here) instead of the GPU might try that to give it a test see if it throws some over to the CPU

i thought it was the other way around lol but not sure enough to state that can anyone confirm which way it is LOL in arma 2 i always got better performance shadows vh than low.

Mind if I ask what monitoring software youre using and how you like it?  Ive been looking to add some myself.

The cpu usage is normal. I have 4770k at 4.5GHZ and got a 780TI recently. And the gpu usage dwindles on 60-70% and the cpu will stay stuck on 25%. my fps is around 40-50 at the apartment complex near Elektro. Putting the graphics on low or high will not increase the FPS at all as i'm clearly cpu limited here, But decreasing the resolution does give a less strain on the CPU and Object details wich gives me more FPS.

More cores will not help at all as how the engine is designed, only single thread raw clock speed As rocket has commented about it here http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1q7bcs/teased_tormented_abusedcome_on_rocket_and_co_give/

I don't know about BF4 but their engine is probably built from the ground up with multiple cores/tread probably also since they're partnered with AMD. The game uses 90-100% here on my cpu in 64 battles.

Use gpu monitoring tool like msi afterburner. If the gpu usage is not around 90-100%. Then you are clearly cpu limited.

I'm using msi afterburner Beta and I love it,

Not only does it monitor all my gpu and cpu stats, but it also overclocks my gpu and has video recording, Great little program.
