record length of time alive for hall of fame type achievements?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, first post so go easy

Was thinking along the lines of simply a records section in the menu where you can view your longest life, with what gear you had for reminiscing of "the best character"

- maybe a top 5 or something, similar to the deaths of characters in XCOM wall

this kind of thing would make me love the game that bit more, because i find that i'm gutted when a character dies which iv'e put some hours into etc

i'm sorry if this has come up before, but i did have a search round the forum before hand, and nothing with length of life or time life came up

what do you guys think?

I like your idea :)

It's not a game-breaking change and I'd love to see this "feature" implemented ^^

Not a bad idea :)
But it has to be local only, no leaderboards or anything like that.

It would be nice to have a summary of your 3-5 best characters, so you can screenshot it and show to people "Hey ive been alive for x days, bla bla bla", as long as it stays far far away from any kind of global leaderboard :)

And also, it should not have kill scores for anything, basicly just the "days alive" counter and a possible screenshot of what you looked like when you died.
DayZ isnt about who can kill the most or who can be on top of a leader board tbh, so we should never have any kind of kill scores, it would turn the game into "yet another arcade zombie shooter" in my opinion.

I agree to the local only. Even thinking about it now there would be an informal leaderboard. someone on the forum would post a "post your screenshot of top 5" etc.

I understand it would take the usual running the spreadhseets behind the game like in other shooter games, but i think with the right implementation it could be a great feature, as at the moment death is so..... PERMANENT :)

thanks for the overwhelmingly positive response, i forget how people can be nice instead of killing you on sight (lols)

now we just need someone who can do something about it to get involved B)  boom.

Yeah, I'm down with a local only solution.

I had a character alive from the point of the initial large security related wipe on like day 3. He only died this past Saturday to a desync glitch. It would be nice to be able to see him in my records.

Also, I know Rocket is  a huge fan of Space Station 13 and in that game you have the option to name your character or go with a random name each time. I would like to see something like that as well. Project Zomboid also let's you rename characters or go with a randomly generated name each time you start. If you incorporate the character name with your simple local list, I think it would provide a good snapshot of all your playthroughs.

Ohh yeh, names would be awsome, but i have to say i do not want to see a summary of ALL your characters, should only be the 3-5 "longest lives" you have had :)

names is a good idea - and i agree  a summary of ALL your characters would be ridiculous - maybe the option to add the character to the "hall of fame" upon death wuold be good - that way you could choose which ones if say, you already had a list of 5 and wanted this new death to replace an old one... there's lots of places this idea could go! would love to see something implemented in the future like this, thanks again for the replies guys, please reply if you like the idea - bigger thread - more noticed! :)

Yes giving people to option to choose what character will be in your "hall of fame" is the ideal choice :)

Perhaps a maximum of 5 slots or so.

Why not? Leaderboards in the mod were great (until they got hacked).

As long as they're postmortem I don't see why we wouldn't want to publish them. When you die, you should have three options for your survivor stats: Discard, Save, and Save & Share. I would absolutely love to be able to browse a "Graveyard" of past survivors and see their stats.

Should have This Week, This Month and All Time leaderboards for:

Zombies Killed

Players Healed

Distance Traveled by Foot

Distance Traveled by Vehicle

Players Killed

Hours Survived

etc., etc.

Can't imagine an objection to publishing these. It would give people more reason to survive as long as possible.

Simply put, this will turn it into a arcade game and people will stop playing in different ways and focus in theese values, nothing else.

DayZ is so much more then this, and nobody can be "#1 in the world!" at this game, hence leaderboards will not do anything good.

If we start doing leaderboards, it becomes a game about killing most people, not doing what you want.

Definitely disagree; I don't see anyone choosing how to play based on a leader board, unless that was already going to be their goal. As long as there are a variety of leader boards covering all play styles, people will just do what they want and see what happens. The "Players Killed" leader board would just be one among many, including ranking Heroes based on how few players they murder. I think plenty of people would be more motivated to be remembered among the greatest Heroes as they would to be ranked among Chernarus' most infamous killers. (Others still would want to rank on the "Explorer" boards by traveling often and exploring as much of the map as possible).

At the end of the day, the most reliable way on to any leader board would be to survive as long as possible, and that's what we should all be trying to do anyway.

This is especially true if the ranking kept to postmortem. Without meticulous note-keeping, you won't have any strong idea where you rank on the leader boards until after you're dead, so I don't think people will play as if they're trying go for a "high score."

In any case, I don't think this has anything to do with whether or not the leader boards are public/shared rather than private/local. People who play to "beat their best score" are going to do that whether the leader boards are public or not. Plenty of people are just as motivated to beat their own personal best as they are to beat others.

I think, done authentically, this would be a step toward making the game feel larger and more connected, rather than the current feeling which is these isolated pockets of 39 anonymous people. Leader boards would essentially be "Survivor Stories." Legendary Heroes or Killers who left their mark on Chernarus and whose exploits are passed on through word-of-mouth and hastily scrawled journal entries.

Edit: Writing this got me excited, so I made this post: Survivor Stories: Authentic Leader Boards.
