JD Cuda 19 Posted January 13, 2014 Hey guys this was just a little idea I was thinking of which I previously posted in the Steam Discussions for DayZ. I thought I'd share it here too. With Banditry and "Killing on Sight" rife in the game (don't get me wrong, it's what makes DayZ the game it is) I feel that there could be some more deterrent to mindlessly killing.A gunshot in real life, in terms of sound, rests between an average of 140-190 dB (depending on the weapon) which can cause immediate damage to the ears and a loss of hearing. Implementing this into DayZ where players would take the risk of losing hearing unless they found some sort of ear defender or other noise reducing apparel. I'm no expert with guns, this is mainly just based on a little research I did through the internet and through talking with a couple of people I know that use a range quite regularly. What do other people think?
FatKangaroo 72 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) It's...a sound idea. Edited January 13, 2014 by FatKangaroo
gray-z@hotmail.co.uk 84 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Some deterrent. "Oh, found those ear defenders I've been looking for, time to herpa derp down to Elektro" And to make it fitting they would have to be spawning in the Industrial buildings and be as common as Worker Gloves. Also even though I don't do the whole KoS thing I'm getting real tired of reading these deterrent threads. The deterrent is that you shoot someone you wreck the gear they have on them (but it should be localized to area hit) but guess what. Even if killing a Bambi spawned a hundred zeds on your head there would still be players doing it because that's what they paid for. It's open sandbox, there are no rules, you play your own game and that's the end of it. Asking for nerfs on KoS is the same as asking "Kan I haz eazy mode plz, this iz too hardz" EDIT: Actually reading the above back to myself my rant sounds specific to the OP. I'm not venting on you personally, just all the 'Let's kill KoS with unbalanced/unnecessary game features' threads that are out there. Guest Posted January 13, 2014 I've seen it suggested before, and whilst it's a good idea these people will just kit themselves up on ear-protectors and continue. If you're gonna go that way, then wearing anything over your ears should muffle your hearing somewhat, so there is also a downside to wearing them all the time. Hikurac 115 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) I like the idea, it'd be realistic and make firefights interesting when you can barely hear for a couple of minutes. Make some common ones that construction workers would use and some higher end ones that only weaken gunshot sounds. Perhaps you might get them often in military areas and a little less common in deer stands for the hunters. Edited January 13, 2014 by Hikurac
dtvh 6 Posted January 13, 2014 i have shoot many guns, and i can argue that you definitely need ear plugs for using them, this is another try at "realism" it seems and i don't like it, if you want real, go grab a weapon and go run around in forest and shoot away. this game does not need some bullshit features.
Karmaterror 982 Posted January 13, 2014 I like this one. Something else for the loot tables. I can also see funny situations where people left there earplugs in by mistake and carnt hear the guy yelling "get down and drop your guns!" even though hes only a few feet away :)
enforcer1975 1111 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) But they don't just protect you from becoming deaf...they should have a clear disadvantage too. You lose a lot of the environmental sounds when you have something like these on. My earplugs i use at work every day muffle about 20-30db in the high pitch frequencies afaik. Rantanplan 18 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) The devices could also come in different flavours, e.g. the one-time foam parts, then the more professional in-ear parts, and on construction sites and workshops you could find the Mickey Mouse style. The latter ones would "collide" with helmets, so either or...With motor cycle helmets you may not need additional protection for your ears. HOWEVER after firing rounds in heavy succession my ears do start to ring (much like in ACE) and earplugs work, but they also make it hard to hear ANYTHING. What do other people think?Only if your ear is less than 4 feet from the outer edge if the muzzle, I don't see how this could be realistic. If my hearing dims out or goes away for a certain amount of time from shooting my own rifle, I'll gladly not use any firearms. It just wouldn't be worth it. Gdaddy22 299 Posted January 13, 2014 Good idea, we should also be able to find some ear plugs, ear muffs to reduce the noise
h4mm3rston3 11 Posted January 14, 2014 I think gunshots should get a significant boost in volume and also be modulated in different ways depending on where you fire. Indoors, in hills or towns. I like the idea of temporary hearing loss or tinnitus if firing a weapon without silencer or hearing protection.
jesquik 75 Posted January 14, 2014 Hey guys this was just a little idea I was thinking of which I previously posted in the Steam Discussions for DayZ. I thought I'd share it here too. With Banditry and "Killing on Sight" rife in the game (don't get me wrong, it's what makes DayZ the game it is) I don't know why people always go back to KOS as the reason for adding things to the game. Nothing will ever be added to the game to make KOS no longer an option. How about you just introduce your idea, which has been posted multiple times btw, on it's own merits. There are plenty of excellent reasons to introduce tinnitus and deafening in this game, not to mention great improvements in the atmosphere of the game, but none of them involve KOS play styles. It's easy to tell when someone just started playing the game: see if they have posts about KOS.
