Rare maps? Really? In 2014?

tbh online map is for p***ies who want easy mode. If you already have played the game for so long you should know where you can find a certain place even in the SA. It's not like they have changed the whole topography.

There's plenty of things you can make rare in a game, but information simply isn't one of them.

I made two test runs. (btw...  read the db map)

Location 055/128

Each time 6 map parts in 10 minutes. Some 1/4 some 1/2 of the map.

You look the wrong places. Look in the cars, on the desks in tankstations. They are common in this places.

While I rather like the idea of maps being rare, and most survivors being perpetually lost all the time, let's be honest: It's 2014, and most people have heard of a thing called "the internet". It takes most people less than 30 seconds to locate http://dayzdb.com/map, which makes it a rather silly thing to try and make maps rare.

 

Okay, so  you can use online maps if you want.  I don't know Chernarus 100% but I can find my way around pretty easily without a compass or map.  A casual player who has actually done some exploring should become familiar with Chernarus in a week or two, depending on how much they play and explore.

 

The maps serve a useful function, like the compass in the game.  They are not absolutely necessary for more seasoned players but are still useful.

DayZ isn't set in 2014. It's set in about 1990's +. Post-soviet state, afterall.

Didn't read the whole thread so sorry if this was already mentioned. ^^

 

Instead of splitting the maps you could add different types of maps, like a civilian map and a military map. The civilian map would show you things like supermarkets and only the main roads, whereas only the military map contains a grid, elevation markers and military sites. Maybe also add a hiking map which shows you the small paths and maybe good hunting grounds (which should be the feeding places for deer that you can find in some forests, once animals and hunting are in the game).

I've made a full map using all 4 parts 3 times so far and i haven't needed to use them at all. Suppose for new players it's different but from all the time i've spent playing the mod it's made the maps useless.

I know. I get my maps in Cherno too. That sort of proves my point though, doesn't it?

  • Cherno's the only place you can get a map together just like that. That makes it kind of rare, especially with the defunct loot respawns. That's 1 map, per server and four hours. That makes maps a LOT rarer than, say, M4s.
  • The fact that you can still get a map together in Cherno on most servers indicates quite clearly to me that very few people bother to actually get a map because a ) they already know the place by heart or b ) just look it up on the magic interwebs, because it takes a lot less effort and a lot less sniper-dodging in Cherno... which I believe is one of the points I was originally making.
  • Having really only one place (cars in Cherno) to get a map together in less than 10 hours ( yea, gas station spawns, etc, are very, very bad) probably makes a lot of new players (who don't know the Chero car-trick) go straight to google to get either a map, or directions on where to get an ingame map, which sort of was another of the points I was originally making.

The only reason the Brand newbies go to the internet is because they are used to getting things given to them in games. Name one "AAA" FPS or sandbox that you don't have a minimap for. At least Far cry 3 made you work for it but it was still easy. DayZ is (and I quote rocket here) "the Anti-game", it is meant to be hard, you are meant to die in minutes if only to learn how to survive for weeks the next time. What needs to happen is all these online maps to be destroyed and make the lazy f*ckers work for their enjoyment and ease of travel. If this sh*t were real and you didn't have a map then you would have to look for one and good luck at that. At least 75% of people who would have had a Refadex (Aussie map book brand) in their car now just have a GPS. GPS's have batteries which go flat so you're sh*t out of luck there. My first place to look would be info places followed by old cars, that is what happens in game and therefore it is realistic to me.

 

If you don't like it then go Start>Control panel>Uninstall Program>DayZ>Uninstall>Ok and then follow the prompts cause this ain't the game for you.

You should actually put that into an own thread in the suggestion section, i like that idea a lot.

I did this a lot on the mod, I ran the map on my second monitor and adjusted it as I moved.

 

At this point I know the map by heart and everything worth while is the same in the standalone or I've learned the new stuff quickly.

I haven't used a map ever in over a year, maybe to judge a distance with the gps but never to find my way or loot spots.

 

But anyone with two or three monitors can easily do this.

I still keep some general information on the game on my other monitor ie: Crafting methods

Dayz take place few years after insurgency in late 2009 from Arma 2 campaign. So it is probably 2014 given the expansion of Chernogorsk and military bases. It is known
