Why do you play DayZ?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I got DayZ standalone a week ago and have been enjoying it solo but recently was killed by a group I had no chance in fighting. I was disappointed by my death and after I respawned I turned it off. Since then I have been wondering what could bring me back and I would like to ask what it is that brings you regular players back?

So basically why do you play a game that essentially has no goal or endgame? And especially why do you keep playing a game that can so very quickly, unfairly and unexpectedly kill your character?

I would especially like to ask those who play solo and have done for a considerable time as that is how I will have to play. I found that simply surviving solo wasn't very hard so I am hoping to find some purpose to keep me playing as I dont really want to shelf this game but I just wasn't having fun last time.

Cheers.

Ahh well, if you haven't played before, there isn't a lot to play for at the moment.  Once the game is finished, there will be more to do.

For me the reason I played a lot as a solo player, was when you get to know the regulars on the server and get a rivalry going.   Some people I met along the way, I ended up meeting up with in game regularly and going on differen't shenanigans and missions.

Revenge is sweet.   You will get killed from time to time, no matter how carefull you are, and when you play as a regular hunting down the Bandits and griefers that did you wrong, finding their hangouts and camps and haunting them is a pretty fun thing to do.

At the moment, in the SA game there really isn't much to do at all, I would just pop in from time to time, check out the new developements and try and gear up and die in some spectacular way before logging out untill the next patches.

In a way, new players that didn't experience the original dayz mod will be ruining their experience by playing the game at this time.   It is nothing like what the original mod of arma was yet, not even in the slightest.   In fact, if you haven't played the original mod, you might be better off trying that out untill this game is much further down the developement track.

Peace out

In many online games I often am able to help people out. Besides that this is a great game, once I heard that you can become a hero that's what helped me make my final decision.

I do like to help people a lot. I used to be a Minecraft administrator for a network of servers. I helped hundreds of people online and on the forums while running a FaceBook page for the servers. It's just a fun habit, I like to help people when I can, so why not in this game too?  :D

I too just survive for some time, I have a small goal in mind but I eventually go looking for trouble due to restlessness.

The main reason I enjoy DayZ though is that can please myself how I want to play day by day or minute by minute for that matter, I'm  not forced to play a particular style on a handful of maps that seem to be getting smaller and smaller with every release and basically punish outside of the square thinking.

Plus I respect the concept behind the game and the community in general seems to be an interesting bunch of people.

To Aerodyll..

Why I play is because the game appealed to me from the beginning. I love the ArmA series because of its realism and skill requirement to be good.

DayZ provides an adrenaline rush when I encounter another player, especially if I have just spent some time looting or have something valuable to me with me. It can get scary and intense sometimes. If you value your character (and others' characters) and are not another 'dumbed down', 'gamey' gamer from the coming generation who should probably stick to Arena-Style Shooters rather than killing new spawns with a sniper rifle.. you will eventually find fun in this game. Banditry is as much as a part of the game as being a Survivor or Hero (although the latter is in short supply. We are working on restoring the balance :)). I mean only true Banditry, killing because you are starving or in great need of an item, stalking your prey and even robbing them with minimum bloodshed.

But this is only the beginning. Rocket and the team have great ambitions for this game. I follow their line of thought although I have some 'extreme' bias (I think sometimes the game should traumatise people, after all, it is a Survival Horror game) and opinions/ideas/concepts. Surviving will get harder and harder and the game will become more and more fun as the false bandits and script kiddies are driven away.

I suggest in the meantime you could go play the Mod or something else for a while. Keep up to date on the devblogs and wait for a patch that suits you. I'm sorry if its boring for you but the game will exponentially get better. Once the major kinks are ironed out there will be more things to do and it will be a lot more fun.

My two cents..

If you haven't run around the streets of Kamyshovo or Elektro in underwear singing Harry Belafonte songs while dodging sniper fire and bandits who can't shoot anyone not moving in a straight line to save their lives...then you haven't lived.  ...At least in my experience.

It brings a new style to the gaming world, it is imo,

The Proper survival game,  it has the best shooting, best mdeical, best immersion and community factors compared to any game ever made.

Except Halo 3....

At this point in time, there is no purpose in playing.  Which is why anyone other than sociopaths have stopped playing and only check in from time to time to see where the development effort is at.

fabtasy MMOs are a snore fest

FTP/PTW games are killing the mmo market and quality in general.

the large and complex sandbox is where is at, slow the pace down and its fun socially. Lots of ideas to try, offers good teamwork.

As a fan of The Walking Dead series, I always thought it would be amazing to have an online free-roam, zombie survival game.

Well, I play for days like today.

Yesterday I met a couple of guys on the forums and got into several intense situations today already.

Heres one situation for instance where we all come to our death today : We made the mistake of entering into Electro in pitch black on a full server. We was being shot at frantically and we had to hold the fire station down for a good 20 minutes, We couldnt figure out where we were being shot from, Nor did we know what to do, so decided to flee to the nearest house for better line of sight. We all survived but were still being shot at! The rush was great, We had a great laugh down the headsets but at the same time we all knew survival was our goal.

The guys shooting us eventually invaded the fire station but to their surprise we werent there, We had moved behind the house on the left from the station. Thats where the fun began, I took out 2 Guys with the Mosin, Sadly both my friends died after trying to get back into the station to clear it out. After I had took the 2 Gunners out, It all went quiet, and all I saw from then on (10 minutes or so)  was New spawns which I refuse to shoot unless they take my friends gear, While waiting for my friends to arrive back to pick up their gear I dipped round the corner to see if there was anybody I had missed and was took out straight away by another Sniper. Fair play to him, He was patient and was the better man that day!

Now, Like you I have to start again... only, I dont care that I died. That whole hour made todays looting/running worth dying!

Thats why I play DayZ!

Good luck! :)
