IcyBlade 48 Posted January 13, 2014 In a survival situation would a small amount of clothing or say tissue be enough to reduce the problem. If so there is no reason to have a specific item do the job as there is plenty of spare clothing around to the point that you could assume you character just tares of a negligible amount from their shirt for use. NotRedd 51 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Just make it so bigger calibur guns cause the issue or rapid firing. Like every time you fire a pistol it adds +2 to your deafness which keeps building to not hearing. It multiplies when you're inside by 4 or something. Each calibur gets progressively more loud from 22 at 1, 9mm at 2, 45 at 3 ect ect. Having a silencer would reduce this count in half for all guns, you can still get deaf by shooting indoors, but it does help a lot. Ear plugs make you half way to the deaf meter but you dont take any damage to it. I dunno. just throwing out ideas. Forgot to mention, the deafness meter should go down over time. It can't be brought down any other means though. Edited January 15, 2014 by NotRedd

SalamanderAnder (DayZ) 1747 Posted January 20, 2014 (edited) You can pretty safely fire a weapon outside without ear protection, it's only when you start shooting indoors where the sound reverberates that you'd start running into issues. Going to have to disagree with you there Mos1ey. I worked at an outdoor gun range for a couple years. Shit's loud. There's really no two ways about it. Either you use hearing protection, or you are bound to have some temporary hearing damage. The only weapon I'd dare shoot without any sort of protection is maybe a .22 or a small pistol like a .38 special. Otherwise, guns are extremely loud. Anyone who shoots without hearing protection is either deaf or dumb, or both. Maybe one or two shots wouldn't be so bad, but emptying a clip from a .223 or firing even 1-2 .308 rounds is going to leave your ears ringing for a good minute. I'd also like to see rare electronic earphones that only filter out gunshots, and also civilian items like cotton balls and winter earmuffs or the ushanka hat which also provide hearing protection. taxi driver 9 Posted January 20, 2014 (edited) The only weapon where i needed earplugs in my life was a 3.5cm Zflak85 (Pic --> http://imgur.com/3gDNv6v ) during my time in the army. This thingy can fire 1100 grenades/minute. Assault rifle (AUG), one-way-bazookas, Glock 19 pistol or even hand grenades were no problem to my ears (if thrown far enough). Everything outside of course. Edited January 20, 2014 by taxi driver
thedogfoodyayho 295 Posted January 20, 2014 Not really needed. I remember when i was a little midget, i always hated guns becuase of noise, but after a year i could fire my M91/30 without earplugs for hours. Its just getting used to it.
Space Milk 195 Posted January 20, 2014 You guys are either idiots or haven't taken a hearing test in a while to realize you are already deaf.I cannot believe you guys fire guns without earplugs and advocate it.
oacceptabel 5 Posted January 20, 2014 It's been proven that loud noises like gunshots are very detrimental to your hearing (regardless if outside, at the range, in the army or in a war) whether you perceive it as painful or not. Rifles in .22LR are generally percieved as relatively quiet with subsonic ammunition, while a pistol with that same cartridge often is percieved as painfully loud. It all has to do with gas pressure dropping to a lower level in a longer barrel, before the propellant gases leave barrel.I like the idea of needing some kind of hearing protection. I'd like too see this implemented by making your ears ring a little more from every weak round (a lot more from powerful rounds) fired without hearing protection, with gradually added temporary hearing loss for consecutive shots fired.

M4ketech 1 Posted October 8 And after 10 years we still need mod on custom servers to have ear plugs. I know its risk when i setup my point, put ear plugs on and overlook city or town when my friends go loot. It would be nice addition, example have small time what it takes to put and take off ear plugs. It can be simple keybind or item requirement also. YES, i know this is possible with mod, but mods for simple realistic things are somewhat weird.
KA-74USER 39 Posted October 19 ten years later and it would still be so fucking cool to see this imagine shooting inside means getting instant ringing and outside you get a few more shots before ringing comes on for a few secs
FuzzyBear182 12 Posted October 20 I think this would be more comedic but idk how people would take it. Snow already takes away your hearing so... maybe?
Sid Debian 132 Posted October 20 To be honest, as folk that's shooting common soviet calibers (5.45x39, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R) I can say 2 shots with 5.45x39 and you have great pressure on your years with ringing, it can be fixed by inserting in your ear channel the shells (shell's shoulders shall look away from ear not into the ear) and yeah it's quite awesome saves your ears (in that case if you have no ear plugs or something similar for ears protection). So actually in game everyone shall not hearing then hearing everything. I think that's quite awesome mechanics that shall be implemented inside the game, and let BI to starting that crrp with not a simulation and other useless blah-blah-blah. Actually why the keck ingame theres the bullet ballistics and physics, if it's not a simulator?
