Man vs. Environment

Recommended Posts

Something I would really like to see in DayZ would be areas only accessible with special equipment, such as Hazardous/Nuclear Waste Dumps where one would need a Hazmat suit or a ABC-Mask to enter the area. This could be indicated as a hazardous area through a Geiger counter or dead and dying trees. I would also like to see forest fires, but I don't know how or if that would even work, and some downed powerlines and electrical hazards around the industrial area would also be nice.

For this part you get beans. I was thinking the same.

PvE is good, but Im not sure about areas where you need special gear to stay alive... It kind of doesent fit into DayZ imo.

And forest fires sound like a total performance killer. At least to make them quite realistic you would need to do a lot of stuff. Then there are the questions: what would cause a fire? Does the fire have a real use in the game? I dont think adding random forest fires without good reasons is worth the effort.

There's something or another BIS put out that adds flooding.

You could always have a Hazardous/Nuclear Waste depo somewhere and after a while of not taking care of it things would happend to release toxic gasses or radiation, like zombies bumbling around inside and scavengers opening containers they maybe shouldn't have. As far as forest fires go I don't think they should be randum either, but you have things like lightning, downed powerlines, unattended camp fires and tracer fire that could cause forest and/or house fires.

That would also be pretty neat, massive flooding could cause a massive malaria outbreak.

With a little work this could be a lot of fun! I'm all for anything that adds more immersion.

DayZ takes place years after the apocalypse started. Most of the toxic stuff wouldnt harm anybody anymore as there are no big nukes in Chernarus or something like that. Well, so much for the realism aspect at least.

I admit, the thing with the gas may not really work, seeing as gases dissipat pretty quickly. There is still the option of Nuclear waste dumps like Lake Karachay, or maybe there is a nuclear power plant somewhere off the edges of the map with harmful waste runoff. who knows right?

I did some reading around and found some interesting facts about Sarin Gas, like that under the right conditions Sarin Gas could stay around in high enough consintration to still be lethal for weeks to years in an inclosed environment, its pretty scary stuff. In the 50s the US and the UDSSR produced sarin for military purposes albeit, they both signed a non proliferation treaty in '93 to stop production and stockpiling by 2007, but who knows whats been hidden where?

On another interesting note, the US experimented with weaponized tropical rat fleas and yellow fever mosquitos in the mid to late 50s. Seeing as the US and Russia where in an arms race at the time its entirely possible that Russia did some of thiese tests too. Killer fleas and masquitos!

Quick other question, can someone point me to an official statement that says DayZ plays (many) years after the event X? Simply because knowing the timespan would influence many suggestions. Or could.

I get that it's not right after. The broken cars and mostly abandoned cities imply some time passed. But then again certain item / food spawns imply it couldn't have been years because all the apples n' stuff would be bad. Some cities might also seem more "green" after such a timespan as far as I can imagine, without any maintenance and such. Both both these things could have gameplay / technical reasons, so ... I guess we can only guess unless someone whips out a precise statement about it.

As for forest fires: Nice idea, but might be too complicated from what I can guess. The idea to need certain equipment to enter certain areas (even if just certain big buildings or so) sounds interesting, however.

I've been looking around for about 20min now, can't find anything about times or dates, there seem to be no official lore.

The only environment related we really need is the seasons and basic weathers.

I totally agree that the game would greatly benefit in having more weather types and something like "seasonal patches" for things like snowy winter or rainy season flooding, but in my personal opinion is that the game would also benefit greatly from other enviromental effects. It seems like most people want more realism, so why just stop at weather and seasons? Is that the only thing that effects us in real life?

I hoped they would think of something like this it is a really good idea. There are a bunch of facilities that are govt controlled or would be in a crisis that without constant maintenance bad things happen. If you find certain protective gear you could freely loot these areas. The basic gear although still rare would have little to no gear slots, the extremely rare protective gear would have more slots and and protection. With the different statuses they have for items they could have radio activity and you would have to decontaminate the items b4 you use/wear them.

It would be interesting if they had safe areas that were unreachable unless you had the right gear. A clan could have a base protected by radiation as a 1st line of defense. There are plenty of industrial businesses and buildings that require hazmat gear on sight as well as the gasmask we already have in game.

Shortly after I posted this idea on Reddit I've seen more and more threads pop up about this, maybe we have a good chance at getting this implemented into the game, lets just keep our fingers crossed!
