jtaskew91 0 Posted June 22, 2012 I am on my 3rd or 4th character, and I only started playing yesterday ;P I have spent a considerable amount of time watching good players sneak in and out of small towns on youtube with no problem. But it seems like I get spotted all the time. I crouch walk, stick to only small villages, and stay in cover but they seem to have hawk vision and Vulcan hearing. Having no weapon and not being able to sneak effectively, I have yet to be able to come across any food, liquids, or firearms (found an axe tho lol). Almost every town entry has ended with me either sprinting for my life into a building hoping to lose them, or running into the woods on an endless chase. So please, help me :(
TheSexyGoat 5 Posted June 22, 2012 Use the little eye and ear icon on your right. They're really helpful, also, use your SHIFT when sneaking past zombies, keep your eyes open at all times.
DancingBear 168 Posted June 22, 2012 well crouching doesnt work anymore, keep in mind that the game is patched everynow and then so the mechanich is changed, zeds can see and hear better, you wonna get past villiges? crawl, make sure you dont crawl yourself into a zeds direction...and thats all..keep an eye for deer stands...much more rewarding than villiges
Alexey Zemanov 6 Posted June 22, 2012 use your SHIFT when sneaking past zombies' date=' keep your eyes open at all times.[/quote']^ This. And prone.
z310 9 Posted June 22, 2012 I crouch walk' date='[/quote']try prone
TheSexyGoat 5 Posted June 22, 2012 Prone gives you one 'ear-bar'. I wouldn't recommend crawling next to zombies either, they will aggro you anyways. Just be sneaky.
SystemiK 366 Posted June 22, 2012 Also, zeds are attracted to smoke grenades. Try to keep one on hand for any situations where you get mobbed, saved my ass several times....
NigeyS 16 Posted June 22, 2012 it's all about the prone, and roll, use roll and prone together and you'll do just fine, q and e to roll btw :-) also avoid your body being in the line of sight of the zeds.
NightRipper 284 Posted June 22, 2012 Use prone. It got me into - and out of - a village, unarmed at the former and armed at the latter. Sound is key as well, if you're using speakers, try switching to headphones. Also, different types of ground make different levels of noise... So instead of crouch-walking on a hard road, stick to the grassy areas.
jtaskew91 0 Posted June 22, 2012 Thanks for all the info guys. I actually just read a post by the devs that the detection system is messed up from the update and unbalanced. I was wondering why sneaking was so much harder than the guys on youtube, they were playing older versions where the detection system was balanced. But in the mean time I will just prone/crouch shift through towns.
ATOJAR 23 Posted June 22, 2012 I wrote this in a different thread but just thought i would post it here. The best advice i can give to newbies is always scout the area your trying to enter, Study the path of the infected and always try to stay behind them, ALWAYS enter a city/town prone & always cross roads prone, If you do have/want to crouch always hold shift in built up areas to minimize noise also always stick close to walls or buildings to help you stay out of site. You can normally hear a zombie before you see it, As soon as you hear ANYTHING hit the deck until you find out where the zombie/player is what what way they are facing & its safe to carry on with your business.ONLY SHOOT IF YOU REALLY REALLY HAVE TOO! ... Sometimes its actually safer to run than shoot, If you run then you will probably only have the zombie that spotted you, If you shoot then yeah you may kill that single zombie that spotted you but i 100% guarantee that shot will attract 4, 5 & 6+ more infected. If you can follow the above then you should have no issues at all in avoiding detection from the infected, The above advice is what ive learned from my own personal experience playing DayZ & so far its served me quite well. Buzzo (DayZ) 1 Posted June 22, 2012 In 1.7.1.4 sneaking was broken, but nothing is broken about it now. Crouching works fine now in 1.7.1.5.If you see a lot of zombies, out flank them. Zombies slowly travel toward you, so the longer you stay in an area they become more dense. If you are outflanking it works to spread them out. As long as your visual indicators are at 2, you don't have much to worry about being seen if you are keeping reasonable distance. If they start to get too close or you're in open areas, go prone. I do more crouch walking when I'm navigating difficult areas than I do crouch running. Try to scout out an escape route before you draw agro. Look at what buildings you can use to drop line of sight before you enter the town. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
NightRipper 284 Posted June 22, 2012 The only other thing I would add is that typically if you draw agro, head for the nearest building and engage the zeds there. It'll give you more time to think, and will reduce the likelihood of you doing something stupid and getting yourself eaten.
SystemiK 366 Posted June 22, 2012 One more tip that a lot of people seem to miss. Your shift button is actually a toggle, double click shift to switch between default run/walk. I always make sure it's toggled to default walk, so I have to actually press shift to run, makes it less of a chance to acidentally run cause you forgot to press the key. A lot of people didnt realilze you can crawl in two speeds as well...Also, make sure to take advantage of the ALT key which lets you look around with your head while still moving in another direction (can also toggle). I didnt use this for about a month but it's a game changer once you get used to it.
Sinaz20 0 Posted June 23, 2012 Also, throwing objects has been working a lot better--Last night, I was using thrown objects a lot to get familiar with the effects--Tossed a can- observed a zombie turn 180 degrees towards the impact point.Tossed a smoke grenade- three zombies "agro'd" directly to the smoke grenade and stood there picking their noses.Tossed a glass bottle- diverted 3 zombies from an entrance to a barn.Tossed another glass bottle- it did not go as far as I expected (read: landed about 10m away), and the zombies went to it, then spotted me.Tossed a flare into an open field- drew a good deal of zombies to it, cleared the treeline around a deer stand for me.Tossed a flare out of a stable- drew all the nearby zombies away.So it works-- results may vary.(these were all done at night.) Longs 42 Posted June 23, 2012 Prone doesn't work very well or the Zombies are bugged to fuck! I've crawled into a few villages now after patiently waiting for a nice big gap in the wandering Zombies only to have some random Zombie run through a building and start hitting me or come running from a good 100 metres away after somehow spotting me :(
deepfried 95 Posted June 23, 2012 whatever you do don't get close to zombies if they are facing you, It seems they have a 90 degree sight detection arc right in front of where their body is facing. If they are facing you you want to be 15m away for each notch on the sight indicator, you can get away with less but no need to risk it.Other than that, general rule is don't run in 100m of zombies, dont walk within 50m of zombies, and crawl if they are 20m. Once again you can get away with more but there is just no need to.
caballero89 0 Posted June 23, 2012 Try to stay away from concrete walls, If there is a Zed on the other side, they will hear you weather you are crouch walking or prone. Stay at least 10 feet away unless you know nothing is there(Listen real good)Also, if you are in a small house, and there is a zed on the other side of the wall, stay still, even if you are prone and move around, they will most likely hear you, wait for them to pass. deepfried 95 Posted June 23, 2012 Also' date=' make sure to take advantage of the ALT key which lets you look around with your head while still moving in another direction (can also toggle). I find I use that more than alt, I tend to use alt for scanning when i'm sitting still in a sniper position.

beavaroo 90 Posted June 24, 2012 Imagine the following scenario:You are "crouch running" in the vicinity of zeds and not attracting their attention; so far, so good. You come to a fence and decide to vault it using the V key.Once over the fence you continue on your way FAILING TO REALISE THAT YOU ARE NOW STANDING AND RUNNING FULL TILT THROUGH THE HORDE!REMEMBER: vaulting any obstacle automatically puts you into a standing stance. You must return to your previous stance, if desired, using the appropriate key.If you stop for any reason, always check that you are in the desired stance before proceeding. A lesson learned through bitter experience.
