Why they need to fix zoom (in conjuction with FOV)

Recommended Posts

This is just a visual example of how you can create an unfair advantage over another player by altering your FOV and using the zoom button.

Same photo. I just altered the FOV in the last one. I would have a huge advantage over one player if he was running away and I had the settings from the second photo. If he knew where I was then took cover behind a bush for example, he would need to go to the main menu, click a few times to alter his FOV then return to the game to line up a shot. How is this not having a mechanical advantage over another player?

The zoom is there because it imitates eye resolution and unfortunately computer monitors and video cards cannot yet render anything close to what we can actually see.

As far as I know: Your human eye cannot have the view in the first photo then magically have the view in the second photo. This is not a good enough reason to have this occur in the game.

Does anyone know of future plans for this to be fixed?

This seems like to be quite an exploit that'll be abused. I'm sure the devs will become aware of it once it's reported.

Thanks for pointing that out by the way  :beans:

Your problem as everyone's problem with the zoom is that it is not the same for everyone.

Countless other games let you adjust the FOV yet when you look down the sights it gives everyone the same magnification.

Dayz needs this fixed asap.

I agree with KoS, yet I have to ask : Such a narrow FOV gives you major disatvantages, would you really do it? I certainly wouldn't

Right here. I think you need to strike a balance. Sure if there is a guy sitting some place then you have the advantage, in a moving situation that narrow field of view is a disadvantage. I set mine about mid way between the two trying to get the best of both worlds.

I think it should be adressed when possible, but I personally I don't care too much... He'll just get flanked from the sides by my buddies. ;)

Depends on your situation. The third person issue is hardly a problem when you see someone running across a field from 200 meters away. Either way, this thread is for this specific exploit. No one wants to talk about the zoom issue in the third person thread so let's not discuss third person in this thread. Deal?

Also yes, I will update the photos right now.

OK, with the new photos, I have to agree, that needs nerfing immediatly. That thing has more zoom than the hunting/sport scope :D

Don't have a narrow FOV?

Take away my FOV options and I will put your head on a pike. I want to play at 110 - 120 FOV because that is my preference. I love that shit.

EDIT: Misread the thread. Oops.

This needs fixed.

I don't want to take them away but I wonder if there is a fix for this. I like running around in a similar FOV because I get headaches otherwise.

My suggestion for devs...

Lock the FOV while playing. If you want to switch your FOV you need to quit and go to the main menu.

Okay, great... simple solution.

Of course, now you're going to start bitching because I've got a triple head set-up and have two complete screens either side of me with additional peripheral view. And then the fact that I'm also using a Track-IR for head movement to augment my control set up.

Pretty soon you'll be advocating that we all MUST be using identical CPU/GPU set ups so there can be no hint of an advantage, anywhere.

They give us this sandbox to play in where we can do what we want, how we want. And even before the dust settles and we work out what we've been given, we've got people shouting out at the tops of there lungs 'NOO! TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM! RESTRICT US! BETTER YET RESTRICT THEM!!'.

A little over the top. Locking the FOV wouldn't be taking away freedom. The freedom is still there but you would need to decide on your FOV before you join a server. Locking the FOV to a permanent standard would be taking away freedom.

The point of this thread was to show that this type of advantage isn't good. If they want to keep it like this then when why not be able to bind keys that allow you to alter your FOV quickly without needing to enter the menu to change it? I'm all for freedom!

Okay, granted it may have been a little over the top, but the fact remains that even with locked FoV on joining a server; locked Gamma and Brightness; locked 1PP or not; it doesn't matter what feature <x> you restrict or proscribe, there is always going to be something else that you can claim gives someone an advantage.

Off the top of my head: what about rotational speed? I can set up my programmable mouse to give my in-game character an almost instantaneous 180. Could this give me an advantage? Hell yes. Should it be proscribed? Possibly, but how would you detect it? What impact is that going to have on game play if you have to check every piece of input against some 'normal' mode of operation?

IMHO, we need to keep the basic game as free and open as possible. Just look around at the ways people are already playing within the DayZ world. People have taken this game already into areas where I wouldn't have thought possible. If you restrict a feature because it might negatively impact on your own style of play, then you are perforce proscribing someone elses mode of play. This should be done WRT private servers set up for specific styles of play, but it shouldn't be a restriction enforced within the base engine itself.

All these claims that Zoom is better than a scope are bull, and i have photo proof.

FOV in these pics is the default.

DayZ2014-01-0422-08-13-407_zpsc723c147.p

Standard, non zoomed

DayZ2014-01-0422-08-20-287_zps4c807c35.p

Zoomed.

DayZ2014-01-0422-08-30-703_zpscc32114e.p

PU scope.

There is a noticeable increase in zoom for the PU over the zoom.

I made a topic about this a few days ago ...basically the dev team need to force everyone to use the same ADS FOV. And to compensate for changes to speed of mouse when switching between high and low fov they need to add a secondary ADS Sensitivity.

Devs should just scrap the current scope implementation and just go back to the old cover your eye with the scope view.

Maybe that way we can get the appropriate zoom levels required for each optic and more importantly fix the fov glitch.

Ill take this with the right correct magnification.

Over the poorly implemented optics in game.
