How do you look at your map?

Do you have to get a map (item) or do you automatically get one, if so how do you look at it?

you have to find maps. the island is split up into several maps, as well. I find them mostly in cities or cars.

To look at the map you have to put it in your hands.

Mod-  Find a map and make sure it's on your toolbelt.  Press 'M'

 

Standalone-  Find a part of a map, and put it in your hands.  If you have 2 adjacent corners or 2 adjacent halves, you can combine them together by dragging one over the other.  I recommend a dedicated hotbar spot for it.
