Jaybopper 49 Posted December 30, 2013 Total fuckin brainwave. Probably happens me once every 1000 trips to the toilet. you ready? Here it comes... I got shot the other day from afar, don't worry I survived but my vision is all blurry and shit.I started wondering what was wrong with me and, more importantly, how can I fix it? Since I did not know the answers to these questions my first, and blasphemous, thought was to Google it or search for answers in the forums, UTTERLY breaking immersion!! I mean if I don't know the answer my character sure as hell doesn't know the answer! Now then, far be it from me to break immersion once I am so blissfully enthralled by it so, wouldn't be wonderful if I could find a book among the many many useless books in the world that would educate me and my character on certain matters. That way I wouldn't have to break immersion and could stop my character from dying a slow, painful and undignified death. Medical booksCarpentry booksEngineering booksFarming booksetc. etc. etc. All for those of us who don't want to break immersion by Googling stuff! I know, I am amazing...The books should just offer information. Like how to treat a gunshot would but nothing like "press F while...blah...blah.." because that breaks immersion...It occurs to me at this point that this has probably already been conceived and is in the works but fuck it it's such a good idea I have to make sure!! TLDR: Books that offer information about how to play the game in truly immersive fashion. Like medical books that offer information on treating the various different medical conditions you can suffer in game.

Antediluvian 7 Posted December 30, 2013 This sounds nice. Many stuff like boiling water, administering a blood transfusion, even cooking properly, could be addressed in various books.Hell, how about people not being able to transfer blood if they haven't read a relative book? It's not like everyone knows how to do it. (Just kidding, that would be sooo cruel..)Maybe they'll add a 'Zombie Survival Guide' fiction book that covers basics and provides tips. Starting item?I like the idea, regardless.
Jaybopper 49 Posted December 30, 2013 Hell, how about people not being able to transfer blood if they haven't read a relative book? Ah but then you would spare people the consequences of trying to fluke something and making a mess of it!
Steel Rat (DayZ) 35 Posted December 30, 2013 I'm just waiting for the patch where I can force feed books to the uneducated masses.
Xandariel 14 Posted December 30, 2013 Nice idea. As of now, books are pretty useless. I mean I like that they put the originals like moby dick inside and that they are(afaik) the full books, but srsly there needs to be a practical use for them. This idea would actually make sense. Because as of now I completely ignore books and dont even pay attention as to what book it is. If they could provide useful information I could carry them around and always read them when taking a food break etc, You got my beans, man.

Koehler 4 Posted December 30, 2013 Like medical books that offer information on treating the various different medical conditions you can suffer in game. What's the point? It would be all over the internet 1 hour after release.
Jaybopper 49 Posted December 31, 2013 The point is that Googling that stuff breaks immersion. I would much rather stay in game and find that information in a book in game... @twinturbonet Great minds ;)
DMHH 0 Posted December 31, 2013 What's the point? It would be all over the internet 1 hour after release.I think its meant to be like... your character has to find the book and read the book.If your char dies, you'll have to find the book again to read it and getting to know the technique e.g. to bandage yourself properly. The books "all over the internet" are useless for your char because there are no working computers nor smartphones in chernarus. :P
Jaybopper 49 Posted January 1, 2014 I think its meant to be like... your character has to find the book and read the book. No I strongly disagree with the idea that each new character would have to read the book to know how to do stuff and be able to perform certain actions. A. You prevent people from attempting things without prior knowledge which spares them the consequences of doing something wrong or the satisfaction of fluking it!B. Each time you started a new character you would have a repetitive, mundane to-do list as long as your arm of things to get that character up and running. Yahweh Ben Yahweh 0 Posted January 1, 2014 I was wondering wtf books were for now we know! Was thinking of how nice it would be to read war of the worlds while taking a dump or read some book that teaches about gunshot wounds while digging bullets out of my lungs! Great idea! OrLoK 16185 Posted January 1, 2014 Hello there This was discussed, at least tween the mods here back when I first joined. It's not a new idea, but it is a good one. Rgds LoK
Ugly (DayZ) 79 Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) Firstly I believe the OP meant for the books to be an in-game way of learning how to perform certain mechanics, not as a type of "skill-check" to allow you to perform these actions or not. If so then I absolutely agree. This is a way to learn how the game plays without alt-tabbing and using your Googler. This would be a fantastic idea! The medical book could contain; How to administer/when to use Saline, Epi, Morphine etc.; Blood type chart; tips for avoiding sickness; nutrition etc... A military book could contain examples of weapons and their attachments, as well as tips on survival, and explain how to start a fire, set up a tent etc... A mechanic book could list tools and their uses, as well as charts on vehicles, and I cannot think of what else. -edit- in lieu of changing everyones books when a new weapon or item is listed, the old ones could become out of print, (i.e. volume 2, 3…) Edited January 2, 2014 by Ugly
