Mountain Backpack

yeah i ditched the mountain for the hunting pack a few days back so much better just for the sake of being able to see behind you while running helps me keep so much more aware, def worth the loss of 5 slots.

I did not know that.. I'll wait until there's any type of brightness enhancers because I find night time servers kind of useless unless I adjust my brightness fully, gamma 3/4 full, shadows off and clouds off; other than that, I can switch off my room light and play with the monitor being the only source of light.

 

OR, I could just purchase my own night vision and sit in front of my monitor whilst wearing them, don't think that would work though... :P

 

Night servers are full of server-hopping cheating kill-on-sight types.

 

At least on day time servers honest and dishonest players (in the sense of brightness/gamma) are on an equal playing field.

 

And let me know how your NVGs + monitor works out

I always go for the hunting backpack, 5 slots don't mean much to me, and I prefer first person especially when moving around, I will likely only play on first person servers once that becomes a thing. Don't limit yourself until then though, as anyone not using third person has a huge disadvantage right now...

 

As for night time, I love the pitch black night times, at least in the mod, because there are many forms of illumination, such as chem lights and flares, seems like there will be a lot more in SA down the line as well, the main problem at the moment with the flashlights is if you're in a building, the beam of light just ignores the walls and lets everyone outside know where you are, I am sure it will be fixed, but even if it isn't, chem lights will have a much smaller radius so shouldn't "shine through" like torches.

 

But anyway, back on topic, hunting backpack, smaller profile, doesn't block much in first person(unless maybe prone), good solid colour for camo purposes, even a green mountain backpack has lighter patterns around the green, so even if it wasn't bigger, it would still be more visible.

I love my mountain backpack.  I play in 3rd person mostly so until they remove that option I'm very happy with my green mountain backpack.  Although a camo version would be wonderful.  I guess it's all down to preference.

 

 

Also in regards to gamme/brightness "cheaters", I think a night with 0 light is unrealistic.  Depending on the phase of the moon, night time is actually well lit in some situations.  A full moon will illuminate an entire field with no problem.  So being completely pitch black all the time is unrealistic.  Plus, batteries are so damn rare you might not have a functioning flashlight (I didn't even spawn with one, damn it).  Not to mention the broken flashlight mechanics where someone can see you from space basically.  I knew there was someone in a military base I was creeping up on last night due to the fact that his flashlight was passing through walls and shining like a lighthouse on the coast...

You do bring up good points, I would love to actually have moon phases though, and new moons should have next to no light, but even during say, a full moon, inside buildings etc should be dark enough to warrant some kind of light source.

The other issue IS because of the gamma/brightness issue, you can't prevent people from exploiting it without literately making it pitch black(ie, no amount of tweaking will show any detail), and then only allowing detail when using a light source.

Obviously the sky would be slightly brighter to allow for silhouetting.

But otherwise, you'd start out with a flashlight, so you can actually see, and then you find gas lanterns, chem lights, flares etc

 

As for batteries, I usually come across a couple, heck in one life I had come across 4 extra batteries, I have stopped picking them up though as currently I rarely need to use my torch.

 

As far as I can tell, the issue with the flashlights, is at night time, there is no shadows at all, I believe that's because they are reworking the night time shaders(correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think arma had shadows at night either), and they haven't added shadows to nighttime yet, thus the light isn't being occluded by walls etc.

Once they add shadows to the night shaders, this issue should disappear...mostly.

I always go for the green mountain backpack, it blends in pretty good. With my current character I was all decked out in green everything, tactical helmet, vest, shirt, pants, gas mark the whole nine yards. Then I took a good look at myself in the inventory screen and dropped the helmet, gas mask, and eventually swapped out most of my clothing. In green camo everything, I looked too much like a soldier. I would rather look like somebody you'd want to approach then somebody who will blow your brains out. Even if that does get me spotted more often.

 

That's exactly why I always try to find an orange raincoat. Plus I just like orange :).

That's actually how night in Arma works, it's just that with the current realtime setting, it's almost never a full moon. I remember in the mod days, we had some very bright nights!
