(SA) Chopper crash/random event idea

Recommended Posts

Hello again :)

I think maybe all or most players of the Dayz mod enjoyed finding chopper crashes, they were that little surprise that caused great joy and great paranoia, as of right now they aren't in the Standalone Alpha for obvious reasons, however I would really enjoy to put my suggestion forward to make Chopper crashes more modern with the technology Dean has in the Alpha.

We know Dean has big plans for the Radios as he demonstrated in one of his dev blogs a while back, also with the community radios idea, however my idea would be hearing a distress call from a Helicopter pilot via the radios signal, basically it would work on a distance basis; For example, the closer you are to the estimated crash of the Helicopter the more you would hear on the radio.

All ***** are static noises are to give the effect of distance

If you are;

  • 100 meters away from the Choppers crash you would hear a full grid coordination via the radio, example 185/245 along with little cool voice acting such as "We're going down over grid coordination 185/245 I repeat we are going down! god help us! *Static*".
  • 1000 meters away from the Choppers crash "We're going down over grid coordination 18*/2** I repeat we are going down! ******* help us! *Static*".
  • 2000 meters away from the Choppers crash "We're going down over grid coordination 1*5/2*5 I repeat we are going down! god help us! *Static*".

The furthest possible distance should be 10000 meters where alls you hear are mumbled static with no numbers.

Now the loot at these choppers can range from badly damaged to ruined items, which varies from clothes to ammo on the rare occasion a weapon or two, perhaps a few protector cases with some stuff in also.

Civilian/Military last stands

If you think back to one of the recent updates on the mod, you'll remember the Infected camps in the woods, these were a nice idea and I think they should be worked on and improved, they would have the same radio static idea as the chopper crashes but give off different messages "We are under attack, we're humanities last stand, if anybody is in the vicinity please send help, we have families here! there are too many of them we can't hold out much longer!"

When you arrive at the camps there are only Infected left to kill as Dean doesn't want NPCs in Dayz but having the illusion of them is a good idea I think, perhaps these places could spawn in the woods like in the mod or perhaps in an empty town far from any players vicinity.

Both pretty solid ideas in my opinion. I like the aspect of distance having an effect on the signal, and it also gives us a pretty good use for the radios.

I'm hoping that once loot tables and stuff have been added to and balanced that we'll see crashes integrated into the game. Another possible facet to this is a new form of crash site in the form of supply trucks (which would have on-board CB radios). We could have these dotted around, possibly sending out a similar distress signal. Just a thought, but it could be cool.

EDIT: I'd like to note that I'm not advocating a return of the infamous roadblocks from the mod.

I guess only me and you really liked this idea.

No it's a very good idea , te reason why dayz got boring is cuz they tried ideas like this but unfortunately it's not realistic enough and ends up just being another broken loot spawn or just another broken static vehicle , but this idea makes it so people good and bad alike will be racing towards the loot /downed helicopter , either to rob loot or to see what happened in general , bringing heroes and bandits together to a scenario that's a little more scripted than just some kos fest is Cherno ,this will add excitement , and if It were up to me I'd say the pilot and other passengers on the plane / helicopter should turn into zeds as soon as someone finds it so it can be more challenging then just finding it

Random helicopter gunner support maybe?

It'll be pretty cool if occasionally there are AI military gunships shooting at zombies

It would be good if when you enter the visible range of the chopper crash then they start to crawl our/move around.

I know I've read a lot here that Dean Hall doesn't want AI, however this would only give the illusion of them.

Like it, more thing's that make the world seem alive, is a good thing.

I would like to see more random spawn's, for example: deer stand's, old crash sites.....

and the Occasional heli or jet flying overhead would add to the atmosphere of dayz i think, crash or not.

The more loot is random the better.Add in crashed ships, hidden bunkers and everything that doesn't break immersion.

Nice Idea :)

I would also like to see something like crashed cars in the game. For example you can find a car crashed into a tree and 2-3 zombies are crawling around and inside of the car is some food and clothes. Or maybe even crashed urals or humvees, where more zombies would be, but also better loot like weapons, tactical clothes or MRE´s.

Military frequencies for radios?

Also, chopper crashes should be extremely rare.

I mean 1 a week sort of thing :)

things like crashed cars/ trucks/ ambulances/ small camp/ last stand scene should be kind of rare but offer pretty thin loot.

Chopper crash should offer a couple rarer guns.

The guns shouldn't be only from chopper crashes, but they should be hella rare anyway.

Choppers should be UN peacekeeper looking.

Last stands could have infected clambering over the barricades as you approach and gunshots from a tent.

Inside the tent you find a soldier that was standing door guard for some civilians.

When he saw the zombies getting through he turned and fired on the people he was meant to be protecting, trying to save them from a slow death or becoming infected.

His primary should have an empty mag from killing civilians and be destroyed as he smashed zombies with it.

You don't see any of this happen btw, just hear it on approach (maybe gunshot flashes) your LOS is completely broken though, by tents all around so immersion can't be broken by trying to shoot him.

Maybe thats just silly though, I think that should be a rare occurrence actually, 10 times rarer than the camps themselves.

If there was a wide range of random events then the Chopper crash a week idea could probably work, however if there was say three random events then it would be a bit painful and more 'MMO' than I'd like it to be. I don't want the random events to feel like raids I just want the world of Chernarus to give the illusion of life.

Counting the days for the next chopper crash sounds horrid to me.

I like this idea, but I think it needs a bit of adjustment, with the standalone's mechanics in mind.

Basically: Chopper spawns, loot is selected from the tables - then the loot's durability is rolled, with a heavy penalty on 'soft', 'flammable' or 'brittle' items - basically, anything that would take impact or heat damage from the crash - and with all items in the crash site taking steady durability damage (or just a semi-regular durability hit) the longer the crash site is left unmolested.

The player could be required to use a fire extinguisher to get to some loot, given one could safely assume most of the bodies would be on fire or otherwise unreachable due to chopper damage.

Very little loot would spawn outside the chopper itself, requiring the looter to get in close in order to loot it. Some of the dead models might spawn as zombies with limited movement capacity, such as those still held into the chopper by seatbelts/broken chopper bits, which can damage the player if they come too close or try to loot one.

Loot boxes should have a decent amount of durability, if they're being kept in the chopper crash loot table.

***

I also like the idea of alternate crash types, which a few different people have put up. Car crashes, ships, et cetera... basically stuff that encourages you to explore places you wouldn't normally go, such as the water and small islands (namely, those without space to land a helicopter, where people are inevitably going to wind up setting up bases). It gives you a higher incentive to explore, and increases the likelihood of a base being located and therefore the risk of it being looted, provided the crash/accident/spawn sites aren't set at fixed locations, or too far apart.
