Should it be easier to keep fed/hydrated?

Recommended Posts

I don't think there are any arguments that the current system of food and water is set at a realistic rate, but is it a good thing for the game? It's a lot harder to stay alive now, and it kind of adds more focus to the survival aspect of the game. There's a feeling of scarcity that was never really present in DayZ mod, it was never a challenge to have enough food and water.

So what do you guys think? Should it be changed? Should it stay the same?

In my experience, it's much to easy to stay well fed and hydrated.  I have more food than I need and there's a place to get water in almost every town.

Once you realise that your hunger and thirst are only depleting so quickly because you're running everywhere you realise that it is fairly realistic.

If you slow down a bit you can go a lot longer without eating or drinking.

I think it's pretty easy after a couple days of playing to stay alive and find food/water. You can go from small town to small town drinking only from wells and never need a drink on you. Food is common enough that usually within an hour of playing I'm fully stocked up to go anywhere on the map. In my opinion the spawns are pretty balanced but I'm sure they will change.

Even if i run all day I don't need to eat 50 cans of beans in one day and drinks 50 soda in one day.

If you want a balanced thirst and hunger system made food and water less common and if you drink from a pond you will have high chance to get sick unless you clear the water

I think if you did a comparison without the exaggerations you'd find that it's surprisingly accurate.

At first it seemed like a bit too much but after just a few hours I had it figured out. It's seems kind of easy now.

I'm waiting final judgement for after loot spawning and zombies are worked out though. Then it could seem just right. ;)

I think it is tough in the early stages, but that is good. It puts more focus on staying alive rather than trying to find NVGs. I have only 1 day in the game but played the mod a ton. I am sure as you get some more gear and learn the game a bit more it becomes easier to stay full.

I'm not finding it difficult at all to keep the hunger and thirst at bay. Seems to be plenty of food about in small villages, and water (as has been said) can be gotten from water pumps.

find a water pump, and drink until your "stomach is full". then find something to open cans with, and eat a lot

in general I think the amount you have to eat and drink is too much. you have to take like 20+ drinks at the water pump to get "full"

sometimes I feel like my character is a little kid:

"mom, I feel thirsty"

"YOU JUST DRANK A SODA!!!!"

:D

It needs to be tweaked a bit more before I'd say its perfect. Not matter how fast your moving or not no one eats or drinks that much fucking stuff.

It really depends on what you eat and drink. I found out canned tuna gives great energy and also replenishes thirst. There are food (cereal and rice) that makes you more thirsty. I only drink water from canteen and eat tuna/sardines.

It would be nice with some more indications, like the bottle in the mod. Made it easy to see when you are full. Of course I like it when it's a bit more challenging.

The first time I drank from a well it took me a heck load of time to replenish my thirst. The "thirsty" icon was yellow but still I had to drink about 10 times from the well to remove it.

My main issue is the long eating and drinking animation, after a while it can be kind of annoying. Also an option to actually eat a whole can in one go is necessary, like choose the percentage of food you want to eat before the animation is played.

Eating and drinking is totally out of control.

I mean, its is not supposed to be THE central element to the game, is it? Yet i find myself most of the time struggeling for food. Because even if i find it, i first need something to open the cans.

If there were herbs and animals to hunt, this could be ok. But as is, getting food is the main focus in a game that should be centered around zombies.

Considering the focus of the game is survival, yeah finding food and water (in the beginning) is the "central element." Once you get better at the game and progress further, you'll have less issues.

I've found this to be true. Also, running around with noting armed will help. If you run around holding an axe or M4, you will get tired faster. It's better to only pull out items when you need them. Don't sprint unless you have to.

One last thing, your F3 key will sit your character down. I've done this when it says you are tired or you are sleepy. This seems to work. It's like a default rest. Just sitting down for 3-5 minutes seems to fix you up when tired.

I`ve played DayZ SA for 28 hours now (WTF?!?..this info is from steam) and had only i few startingsprobs with thirst and hunger.

After all i found enough to eat and drink (easy with waterbottles and beans ♥).

BUT...i would say, that it is too often that you have to eat & drink...even if you`re stomach ich full.
This should be more balanced and not THIS important in DayZ...in my opinion.

Every hour or so you need to drink or eat should be okay.
If you run alot and you`re full of package, than about 30-40 minutes.
idk but at the moment, it`s too often i think.

I just hate how tough it is on a fresh spawn. Takes a while to find stuff from my experiences. Then by then any liquid is like todays equivalent diamonds and gold but it's still never enough to quench your thirst.

However If you've even been lucky enough (like i have) to recover from really low blood and sickness. For your character to have high energy and the "healthy" status on the gear screen. It's a very satisfactory feeling. Incredibly so after being blurry and having those annoying status's for so long. So in that aspect. I quite like it. Feels quite realistic the balance of drinking and eating necessary If you're st the end-game alpha stage like I am.

The only time it is really "tough"(not too much) to survive is right after you spawned on a high populated server where the shore has been looted dry. Apart from that it has gotten even easier to survive. Once you get used to the new system, you just run up to a well/waterpump and drink 15 times, fill up 2 bottles and thats that for drinking. Eating isnt really the problem anymore either with items like powdered milk around that only take 1 slot and you can eat from 10 times. It is so ridiculously easy to stay alive food and drink wise, that Im not really surprised that most ppl went from discovering, back to killing others for the lulz of it.

I think hunger goes a bit fast, even given that we're running. Marathon runners don't stop to skull a can of beans every 30 minutes. I do like that it is an ever present factor, just feel hunger is a little bit too aggressive at the moment.

You aren't eating/drinking enough. Go into inventory and eat/drink until the thirsty and hunger icons have vanished. There are color stages which signify how hunger/thirsty you are.

Green - you're ok. A light snack or drink is all you need.

Yellow -.starting to get hungry/thirsty.

Orange - need to find food or drink soon. You're starting to starve/thirst

Red - you are starving/thirsting to death. You will pass out soon.

Of course what I post is not 100% correct! but it gives you an idea how it works.
