What kos brings to Dayz

Recommended Posts

I have been playing on the same character for a few dayz now and i have amassed some quite nice gear with  some food and drink, Maybe enough food and drink to last maybe a few hours, I am sick atm from eating a rotten kiwi, My gun has run out of ammo and i am forced to use my axe to defend myself.

I am currrently holed up in a house in ***** and i am fearful of going too far incase of ...

(What would bring that heart pounding fear so much that im in two minds whether to leave the house im hidden inside?)

Zombies?  a predictable computer controlled opponent that you can outrun and will give up when you get too far from them and has no intelligence...

or

Kos players? an unpredictable opponent that will (or will not) give up and has (in most cases) some intelligence to counter you...

You see if it wasnt for kos players there would be no fear in this game and i would happily leave my abode and roam the streets freely.

Without kos players this game would get very boring very quickly.

So think about it you forum posters who get killed and come on here moaning about kos, do you want a boring Dayz with no threats.

keep ya head down and only trust those you know :)

I think you have a point to a certain extent. No-one (or at least no-one sane) is advocating the complete abolition of KoS behaviour. It's a valid playstyle, and as you say, it adds a level of fear and paranoia to player interactions that wouldn't be there otherwise.

I think the problem a lot of people have is that recently (and not just in the SA, where there are obvious reasons for it, Alpha, incomplete, yada yada - the mod had the same issue) it's been too dominant a playstyle - it's easy to play that way and have one or two heavily-armed players able to dominate a city on their own. The easy availability of ammo, the relative ease of health restoration, and the general lack of need to travel to do anything means that any player with a gun and enough cans of beans could pretty much kill tens of survivors on their own, and that's starting to get away from the point of a 'survival' game. Sure, there should be some threat from other players, but there's an upper limit past the point of which DayZ simply becomes a deathmatch.

I do agree that just as there are too many players running round like rambo at the moment, there are also too many players who need to toughen up a bit and realise that this is a survival game, and that part of that survival involves avoiding hostile players. Just because you're running round in nothing but your pants doesn't somehow make you immune from bullets - you don't get a free pass just because you don't have a firearm. You still need to take just as much care when moving around as you would if you had top gear. Don't come crying on here when you get shot because you were running through Elektro with zero fucks given and someone decided to give you a 5.56mm lesson in how not to gear up.

In rocket we trust tbh

He said he is going to concentrate on the survival against the environment as opposed to the zombies and players.

So if the environment (hunger,thirst,disease,etc..) is harder then players will struggle to fight each other, and i think this is the best way to go.

But you must never try to get rid of kos, just make it harder for them to survive and they will fall in line :P

ps - if you have'nt seen the film The Road http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898367/

Watch that film, its awesome, no zombies, but its a survival movie, and rocket has said he has had most inspiration from that film for Dayz..

If only more Dayz players would watch that film rather than the hollywood love fest unrealistic The walking dead crap.

Ps - i did watch walking dead the 1st series, and wasnt bad, until it turned into a sitcom.

More grit less razzle dazzle for Dayz and im :):):):):)

Honestly, it's not going to matter how the game turns out in the end. If there are weapons and melee combat, a large number of people will play just to see how many kills they can get.

I've only encountered 1 group that were friendly in 15 hours of play time (I've only played alone thus far) and that was the first night of release. I've even had a dude come after me with his fists even though I was carrying a fire axe.

Douchebaggery will persist. :\

The problem isn't the KOS playstyle, its the lack of viable alternative playstyles.

Unless you are a hardcore RPer, exactly what benefit do you possibly receive by waiting to find out if a stranger is friendly once you have significant gear?

That's why there needs to be some non-lethal ways to disable people, so you can either rob or simply approach them safely. (As I suggested in this thread: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/156478-non-lethal-options-for-disabling-players/). Additionally, once people can "make camp" and store their items somewhere relatively safe (unless the camp is discovered), they might find it more worthwhile to approach other players instead of shooting first in certain situations.

Too many games with open world PvP make the mistake of responding to ganking complaints with artificial restrictions. The real way to reduce excess KOS is to add other stuff for people to do, and other ways for them to play. That way the people who want to play KOS style can do so freely, but those of us who play that way only because we feel like we have to would possibly follow an alternative approach.
