Barely a Zombie game

Recommended Posts

Even taking into account the most recent A2/3 mod versions, this is barely a zombie game.

Ask yourself this question: If zombies were completely taken out from the game right now, what would remain?

The answer: A bad hardcore deathmatch walking-sim with limited survival mechanics.

There are some serious Zombie features missing from the vision of this game.

Go watch/play:

The Walking Dead series

28 days later and its sequels

Dawn of the Dead

Land of the Dead

the original night of the living dead

Left4dead series

Resident Evil series (None after 4)

& much more

Where are the plans for giant zombie hordes?

Where are the plans for zombies being able to break thru windows?

Where are the plans for setting up bases and having huge hordes come and try and attack?

The sense of terror one should feel when seeing a group of zombies?

Zombies will likely always remain a buggy, annoying mess tacked on to the mod. The biggest threat isn't even zombies when the zombies should be just as much a threat as players.

But I just remembered something, the ideas above, although awesome, simply can't be done properly on the piece of trash known as the Arma Engine.

Cheers

Yes, it is barely a game.

That's why it's called "alpha"

Don't worry friend, it'll all come together down the line sometime.

Don't know what is more annoying, complaints which have been answered dozens of times or "it's alpha" spam

Read the above post. Rocket details which upcoming features are being worked on. More zombies will be part of the optimization process.

Personally, it's not that big a deal to me. Yes, more zombies would make it more enjoyable, but as long as they fix it before beta it makes sense to ensure that the other systems are all functional before you crank up the number of zombies.

We absolutely plan to have more zombies. To cope with the current total dynamic entity count of over 10000 we have had to make a great deal of optimizations. If loot is completely removed, we can easily run 4000 zombies in our debug builds. In the new year we will be optimizing the way we handle dynamic objects (such as loot) a great deal more which should give us significant savings - but the change was considered too risky to be done prior to alpha launch. If we had problems, we would have delayed the project further by months.

Zombies
* Zombies clipping through floors/walls
* Zombies hitting through upper floors from the ground floor
* Low zombie numbers
* No zombie respawning
Zombies are a work in progress they are a very active area of development, we consider the current implementation a base level to commence further testing. Their AI was completely redeveloped, which means we need to come up with new (more efficient) methods of their interaction with the world, such as collision, as the ArmA way is not designed for thousands of AI to operate at once on this scale. This will be one of our most active areas of development.
