How to create your own character?

Whenever I try to create my own character it just resets back to a female when I back out of it.

 

Any way to stop this?

You have to click Set Default above the back button after you've customized your character

As Vistalgic said.

Also, your current character needs to die before you get the one you set as default.

Ah right, I thought that meant revert your choices back to default.
