Thoughts so far on Dayz Standalone

The extreme lack of food and weapons on any server that's had more than an hour or two since reset is a major problem. Ran from Cherno to Balota and managed to find literally 0 water and only a few scattered piece of fruit before I eventually died from dehydration. Frustrating.

 

Melee weapons seems horrendously underpowered if I'm not using them wrong. I tried to aim for headshots with the crowbar and shovel. I can understand being less efficient than guns, but whacking a zombie in the face nine times with a shovel and have it still beat on you is a bit unfair. Since zombies no longer get slowed by building interiors, it's pretty much impossible to loot anything with a zombie on you, and zombies have random and occasionally ridiculous sight range.

 

On a positive note, though, the game looks great and runs beautifully (even on my craptop). The playerbase seems nicer - I even came across some people and didn't get shot at - and overall the looting system is about 9001x better than Arma's. However, until spawn rates are fixed so it's not impossible to find supplies if you can't get on the server in the first hour after reset, I probably won't be playing much.

I think loot and zombies should respawn once every 4 hours or so. It's kinda awesome that you don't find useful stuff every time you enter a town. And for once the zombies have an ability to surprise me which is cool! We definitely need more zombies though and roaming ones too!

I really hope for more loot spawn spots like inside closets, fridges etc! They just need to make them open up like doors.

thoughts so far? quit bitching about the nighttime, and if you can't deal turn your brightness and gamma all the way up. it's just black and white then.

 

loot scarcity is fine.

 

need more Zeds.

 

I've only run into one KoSer. he attacked me with an axe when I had an M4. good idea bud.

I think spawn rates should be a increased just a little bit and they would be perfect. Also when I'm in a military area I want to find more military items. A respawn timer for both zombies and loot would be great.

Had the chance of playing for a few hours yesterday and I must say I'm impressed!

 

Ofcourse as an alpher a lot of bugs but ALOT of potential!!!

I prefer the loot system, though this obviously isn't a realistic game, it's definitely authentic. And in a world plagued by looting and the walking dead, you would expect it to be extremely hard to survive. Plus with the previous sysmtem people would just loot a place, run away ans lay in a Bush, then go back in a few mins, this was extremely lame.

IMO keep it as it is, I'm not worried about 24/7 day light servers, as they won't happen. Not with the official game anyway. Just like it didn't with the vanilla mod.

The towns could do with re texturing. Though they look good and a lot better now, fps is bad in towns and I'm presuming it's down to the textures. Surly they can be done similar to the player models right? Or maybe I'm wrong, as it's not really my field.

I played at about 7 to 9 pm gmt yesterday. Switched to US servers, it was dark everywhere, even CA server I tried despite 180 ping. Do all severs run same in-game time irrespective of RL time, or did I miss something?

The scarcity of loot combined with inability of a character to run (without risk of dropping unconscious) is a very strong incentive for server hopping. Not many reasons *not* to server hop when the alternative is another 30 mins of *walking* to another location just to get something to drink. Especially at night time when you can't even entertain yourself by looking at the scenery around.

It was some sort of ironical fun when all I found in barracks at Balota were piles of used jeans. After that I tried to climb the watchtower, mismanaged the descent, fell down and died.

My 2 öre:

 

I've played since realease and have not died yet. I actually think it's too easy. Granted, we're a gang of 3-8 people playing together and watching each others back so that probably helped a lot, but here goes:

 

Positive:

- The sense of desperation, harshness and general feel of survival-of-the-fittest. I need to man up in this game and I love that.

- The graphics are better than I expected and OK so far in terms of FPS, even though towns and cities could be better optimized.

- Exploration is more fun with more buildings.

- The sense of accomplishment is back that got so thoroughly lost in the mod, now that items are harder to find

- Nighttime!!! I hope rocket never gives in to the night-time-haters.

 

Negative:

- The food/drink-system is bad or I don't understand it fully. I'd really like a realistic nourishment system, i.e. needing to eat and drink as often as in real life, but food/water harder to come by. I feel my guy is too thirsty but primarily too hungry to be realistic/authentic. One full can of beans should get my at least 4 hours of energy.

- Bugs and glitches. Granted, they are fewer than I expected, had a few crashes to desktop and lost a few items I tried to put on the ground.

- Too easy to find M4's. My current gang of three that I'm going with, we've all found full 'military' gear with M4's with lots of magazines, large bags, medkits, camo clothes, raincoats, ballistic helmets, vests and lots of utilities to boot.

- Can still do the gamma/brightness/HDR-trick to see night as almost black and white day time.

 

Overall though I'm having a blast! Thanks to the DayZ team for sticking to your guns.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the Alpha, it's much smoother and less buggy than I expected, and once you overcome the initial frustration with the food/drink system it's actually pretty good.

 

Of course we are lacking the crafting , animals etc that will make it really interesting. But its a good foundation.

 

I am actually enjoying there being less zombies as well. As survival is harder getting hit by a zombie even once  and catching a disease can be fatal makes getting caught out by a zombie quite tense.

 

 

 

I don't understand why private server's get such a bad wrap and why all the so called hardcore gamers (or whiners IMO) go around claiming private hives ruin DayZ?

 

The reason private hives / servers etc fucked the Mod is because people are idiots. You give them an easy option they take it. I'm really hoping that Rocket keeps Dayz locked up nice and tight so people cant fuck it up. Dayz is better the harder it is, let people add weapons and vehicles , take away night time etc and you just end up back where the mod ended up. 

 

Unfortunately a lot of the people are coming into the standalone with that mentality.

+ The new Inventory system as well as all the items and that they are in different conditions. 

+ The movement is somehow better than in Arma2 not by much but still is. 

+ Melee, now I havent played the mod in about an year but the melee feels better than the last time I played the mod. The axe swing like I think it would an the hits connects pretty well. Not 100% though.

+ That we can combine items now. Flashlight need an battery, beans need a can opener I think they will really expand on this. 

+ All the different clothing..

 

- The HUD or better the lack of it. Let me now if my character is hungry or thirsty or if Im sick etc. What exactly is the " I feel worn-out" etc. No idea what im doing to be honest and the game dosnt explain this . 

- I like playing at night but I will be always forced to play at night ( can play after work ) .... witch I dont like. Dont know how, maybe 12h rotation instead of 24.  

- The looting, I like that now to see the loot you must really search the building but its another thing to pick it up. Normally I hit tab and take everything but even that dosnt work all the time. 

- Fix the Alt-F4 

- Zombies, I saw them and I even died because 4 of them attacked me at ones. But there are so few of them 98% of the time you can just run into the city loot it and maybe a few zombies will attack you. 

- Loot, the fact that it only spawns on server restarts. I hope this is an alpher thing only..

I find m4's and ammo in every barracks basically. People don't check every hiding spot or even what's above them. There's too much loot when you realize this. But also some loot is glitched and spawns below buildings.

The loot system works well for those who actually thoroughly search.

Why does everyone assume to change the day and night time rather than the server location? There are already servers doing this.
