It would be cool if in SA we could dig into the ground

Recommended Posts

I think it would be cool if we could get a shovel or something and dig holes or something like that into the ground to make little tunnels or shelters to store/hide things inside. And maybe make traps so if people are running, they can fall down into it and break their legs. Just something I think would be awesome. Probably own't be added though.

Maybe they could set a limit on how deep you can go or something.

I dont think this is at all feasible, due to the engine limitations. The system that defines the terrain in game is an image file. Essentially, the map is a high res image where the colours define the height.

Because of this every location can only use one Y value, therefore, tunnels just aren't possible. The location of roads and objects and such is stored in a separate file which is simply added to the map image when the map is created. This is the reason the ArmA can support such a large map while using relativity few resources. It is also a very Mod friendly way of doing things.

Edit: Spelling :)

Yeah a mass grave...if only you had to use a shovel to bury a body in dirt and not in concrete.

Can you not delete a few pixels from the image and replace it with a hole object?

I know it is possible to place an entrance to teleport you to a far off cell.

The only engine I have seen that has this feature (kinda) and handles it well is the Frostbite 2 engine. Yet, the reason we may not see it as performance heavy is due to how small the maps are in the Battlefield Franchise.

HUEHUEHUE, foxholes.

The amount of times I've been in one of them with a AA gun firing at me.

Theres a lot more to it than that.

I think it's a neat idea but there should be limitations such as,

The hole takes a while to dig.  For every foot I think it should take a minute.  As you dig deeper it should take longer too.

You can't dig more than 1.5-2 meters deep.

You can only dig in dirt.

I remember reading something that Rocket said about perhaps using a similar sort of system as the Nether in minecraft, dont ask me for a source though, im buggered if I remember where it was.

As I mentioned mentioned above, it just isnt possible with the engine being used as much as I would like to see it. Its the trade off for having such a large scale map.

I still don't see why you can't edit that map.

But I suppose even if you can't explain it you've proven to know well more than any of us.

Okay, here's what I mean.

You say colour defines height... Why can't you just edit the colour of a few pixels, wibbity bam there's your hole.

Can the image file not be edited? Is the editing of this file so super taxing that it just cannot be done?

Im very sure this wont work, the terrain high gets defined by the image file and most likley smoothed after. One pixel is about 1-2 meters I think so your holes would just be 2m² ugly lowerings that look more like a terrain bug than a real hole.

Yeah, notice how the craters after a plane crash are just lumps of dirt superimposed on the terrain? I doubt it's likely standalone will have deformable terrain either.

VBS2 has it though.

The changes to one vertice in turn effect the vertices around it, so trying to make a hole would make a crater. The crater would then have to be filled to look like ground with a hole in it, which would look terrible. This is the reason that even if you drop 1000 bombs all over chernaurs, you only ever get a 2D image that looks like a crater and never actually a hole in the ground :)
