Character Clases (moved)

Recommended Posts

Edit - put this in general, but perhaps it should go here.

Character classes

I've been thinking about ways DayZ could develop if it was to head down the path of a paid-for standalone game, and as a rough outline, wondered if the introduction of classes would be one outlet for more options.

The way I see it, this would give you some diversity when you set out, rather than the identikit 'survivor' we all start as. Classes would have different starting gear and different skins (which could be purchasable, I suppose, if that was one way the game was being funded.)

I thought:

*Civilian - starts with food, water a backpack and map.

*Medic - starts with pills, morphine and/or blood and bandages.

*Soldier - stars with a gun and 1 mag, chemlights and a backpack.

*Hunter - starts with a knife and a hunting rifle (Lee enfield) plus 1 mag.

*Mechanic - I've never repaired a vehicle, so not sure about this one. Are toolboxes in game? If not, how about fuel and spare parts?

Of course, this would just be starting gear - you would pick up stuff as you go along.

This may encourage co-operation - but the huge drawback is that the two armed classes will simply shoot the others for their stuff. But it's not really that different from starting with no weapon just now (which I support!)

Still, might be a worthwhile idea. Who knows?

What's so bad about it? Remember - DayZ may one day appear as a standalone product, and I'm just tossing about ideas that would make that viable in the long term.

As good as Day Z is - and I think it's very good - how much replayability does it have?

I've not even outlined my 'playable zombie' mechanics yet :)

The thing about DayZ is, that it plays like a sandbox. It's open ended game, there is no real goal, also some of these classes are superior to others.

I do not see ANY point on spawning as someone else than Soldier or Hunter (the classes you put). As long as soldier's "Gun" is something more than "Makarov".

Spawning with almost no gear is the way to go in my humble opinion.

It gives more to the immersion and makes the gameplay more challenging and fun.

Next you'll be wanting to add "trainable skills" where you get better at them the more often you perform such an action...

In all seriousness I dislike the idea of adding "classes" in that manner, but I do think that there would be survivors that were a mechanic or doctor/nurse before the apocalypse hit. So there would be a small chance that you'd spawn as one of said survivors with a profession and would spawn with a toolbox or basic medical supplies, but without a weapon as they wouldn't have an advantage over everyone else but would be of more use alive (or dead if your a bandit).

I mean if someone managed to lose a horde of infected but took some hits and came across another player and befriended them and then found they are a doctor/nurse as such, you'd be thankful you found them as they could patch you up, maybe not for free, but still it would put level of teamwork back into the game as such.

I agree! That's why I would spawn as a civilian and take to the hills.

This is really just a suggestion as to how we could get more skins into the game, with a mechanic to back it up (five classes+male/female=10 skins). I don't see that some are superior just because they start off armed. They have very little ammo, and yes, the soldier would have a Mak.

I reiterate - this only affects the way you look, and the gear you have, at the very start. After that, it's free-form gameplay just as it is now.

Although maybe no weapons would be the way forward. Perhaps it could be:

*Soldier: Starts with backpack, mak ammo and a compass.

*Hunter: starts with a knife and Binoculars.

Just tossing it out there - if anyone else has suggestions other than "this would ruin the game", fell free to toss them in too.
