Character classes

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about ways DayZ could develop if it was to head down the path of a paid-for standalone game, and as a rough outline, wondered if the introduction of classes would be one outlet for more options.

The way I see it, this would give you some diversity when you set out, rather than the identikit 'survivor' we all start as. Classes would have different starting gear and different skins (which could be purchasable, I suppose, if that was one way the game was being funded.)

I thought:

*Civilian - starts with food, water a backpack and map.

*Medic - starts with pills, morphine and/or blood and bandages.

*Soldier - stars with a gun and 1 mag, chemlights and a backpack.

*Hunter - starts with a knife and a hunting rifle (Lee enfield) plus 1 mag.

*Mechanic - I've never repaired a vehicle, so not sure about this one. Are toolboxes in game? If not, how about fuel and spare parts?

Of course, this would just be starting gear - you would pick up stuff as you go along.

This may encourage co-operation - but the huge drawback is that the two armed classes will simply shoot the others for their stuff. But it's not really that different from starting with no weapon just now (which I support!)

Still, might be a worthwhile idea. Who knows?

They should also introduce hats and create a series of viral youtube videos like "Meet the civilian"!

Im sure everyone will just pick the gun classes if this happened lol.

Then just wait around for someone else who spawns as a medic or anyone else without a gun and it be free loot.. :D

That's what I'm afraid of. Maybe the fact you get a different skin would tempt some people? Also, would be great for team-play when you and a few buddies spawn as different classes.

As a lone wolf-type, I'd probably spawn as a civilian and do what I always do - book it off the coast.

Any play SWG when it first came out?

It originally had a system where you needed other classes in order to heal certain wounds and mental fatigue. I thought it was bullshit at first but grew to love it as it created more interaction between players.

The "lol kiddies" found that they couldn't just shoot everyone/be obnoxious because they eventually needed the help of other players. If you were a doctor you could become pretty popular/rich while also being social and meeting lots of other players.

I really grew to love the system and then Sony killed it.

Personally, I think something like that could really help Dayz become more of an interesting survival mod rather than the "deathmatch only" flavor it has right now.

These threads again? Can we stop this?

Classes are a terrible, TERRIBLE idea.

I like the idea that you start in the same boat as everyone else, its what YOU make of it, not the path the game chooses for you

The only way I see class as working is have players can learn and discover book/journals which would open up it as a sub class.

The main class is a survivor- which all players are.

Sub class wouldn't be the normal say class but skills that would open up or make you more efficient in certain tasks.

Ex. Read some books on car/vehicle repair = you can fix a vehicle easier or your able to repair future damage to it.

Feel free to brain storm others.

The only one I would not like to see is no book that opens up skills that allow you to kill players. Books should be about re building society.
