Limited Climbing Ability(as average people can do)

Recommended Posts

I'd like the character to have a Limited Climbing Ability(as average people can do) in Standalone.

People generally are not skilled climbers, but there are many structures on which an ordinary person would try to climb in a situation of danger. If suddenly attacked by a horde of zombies, it would be very useful being able to choose to climb wherever possible (pipes, gates, fences, railings, gratings, grids, especially trees with branches easy to reach) trying to get to places that zombies are not capable of reach.
It could be argued that efforts to climb, as well as still hanging at something, quickly reduce the stamina until we fall down with the risk of serious injury, broken limbs or death depending from the height. (Something similar to what happens in games such as "I am Alive", but in a more realistic and believable way)

The places the character could reach with this kind of climbing only in rare cases could permit a temporary, but not prolonged rest(on narrow ledges, sills, or branches of certain trees) , just leaving hands free to shoot to the zombies that awaits down there. On these "rest spots" the stamina would continue to lower but less rapidly in order to discourage PvP snipers staying there indefinitely.

I think this definitely require a lot of work in animation, but it would make the gameplay much more free and less repetitive.

Do you think it desirable / possible to implement this feature in SA?

That's new to me.

@OP

This idea is also pretty original as far as I'm aware, I'll give you props for that much.

In combat PVP situations aswell it would have you avoiding obvious flanks that the map often forces you into taking.

It would probably look clunky but IMO its worth a try next time the devs are doing mocap.

I would consider myself quite a good climber I've never been tall, but I've never been weak in the upper body.

Some kids are amazed that I can run & jump up a 8 foot wall, LOL they've either never tried or have really weak arms & torso.

Do you mean the scaffolding or a drain? It must have been added since the church doesn't have either of them by default.

Thanks for the support. It 's my first post here, and I really hope that devs take a look.

I’ve been dreaming a game like this since I was 8 and saw my first zombie movie. I remember that most of the fear came from the scenes you did not know if the characters would be able to find a safe place while the zombies chasing them. This is the reason why I believe that the ability to climb without knowing a priori if and where we will find a "rest spot" could be an important factor to make the game more frightening and fascinating. Accordingly zombies shouldn’t have this ability, or it should be very poor compared to humans.

i guess climbing needs also the "proper" map

What do you mean with “a proper map”?

I roamed just a bit in an alpha of SA I found via torrent. Although it's an early version of the game, I noticed that the most of the buildings could be easily arranged for this aim simply adding them more structures like pipes, railings etc. Unfortunately I also noticed that the character can climb without any particular effort along the cables of a lift till top of a building of many floors(absolutely unrealistic). And even worse, I noticed that the zombies can do the same. I hope devs will rectify this!

Why wouldn't a DayZ be able to climb? They have the same arms, legs, and opposable thumbs we do so if we could climb it they should be able to. They are alive and slightly MORE physical than us because of the virus driving them to extremes.

Although personally I do not like the idea of zombies as fast as humans or faster, as I don't like that they are still alive and infected rather than simply resurrected dead, I realize that fast zombies are the best choice for a sufficiently dynamic gameplay .

But if they’re stronger and driven to extreme by the virus I think they should be also less  capable to perform actions that require precision, balance, coordination or planning as is required in climbing. Otherwise it would be convenient become infected. You become stronger, smarter, more capable in all, and this does not seem to have anything to do with the idea of zombies itself. They are not animals, nor monkeys with innate climbing skill, their brain has gone and they only follow their instinct without any intelligence.

I think the value of this game is in trying to keep coherence and credibility despite its fancy.

I think so too, now that zombies run in buildings there is nearly no escape, zombies need a weakness.

I would propose the same as you limited motor-skills.

Aslong as zombies are able to repair muscle their muscle would grow immensely over the short periods of running hitting and running they do. Half an hour at the gym is enough for most to bulk up full sprinting for hours everyday with seemingly zero fatigue would bulk up Zeds heaps.

But I fell the virus should eat at their brain destroying their intelligence and motor-skills.

In essence they could climb... But it may take on average about five attempts to jump over a six foot wall it would take a normal guy to climb once.

When they're failing I would like to see slipping bloodied finger marks giving a nice atmosphere when tracking an already hunted player.

Maybe some visibly fresher zombies could be smarter and have better motor skills let be weaker melee wise and also slower.

If their brain were gone they would be dead. I would rather see the zeds as humans in a rabid like state. No social skills whatsoever, the only emotion they know is hatred towards the living ( maybe because they are different? ). Basic skillsso to speak.

I don't see anything stopping them from doing what we do expect manipulating complex things like weapons, vehicles and other things like f.e. bandaging. Firing would not be a problem, even a monkey can fire a gun when he pulls the trigger but i can hardly believe you can tell them how to point a gun at a target and hit it.

Viruses destroy cells by recoding DNA and making new viruses to destroy more cells. To think that over time the propagation of these viruses wouldn't have significant affect on the human body seems silly to me.

The virus needs some fact about it.

If its a magic genetically modified virus that removes pain, But keeps feel for motor skills and only affects certain areas of the brain that might need to be specified.

Let's have rockets brother enlighten us before we start bashing eachother over something that was their idea. I hope they have some kind of explanation unlike most of the time where he tends to stay silent or give vague comments and guidelines.
