Knife combat. Grab 'n' stab

As many of you know melee is being completely reworked for the SA.

The best way to simulate knife fighting IMO would be a combat stance where you hold out your left hand.

With RMB you can grab somebody that is right on your hand.

Depending on the height of your mouse after you grabbed them.

Above / below. Above their chest you can perform overarm stabs to the chest / Below there's underarm stabs to the gut with the LMB.

You could break free from grab but it wouldn't be instantaneous.

I think when you aren't in grabbing you should knife slash.

Other ideas:

Grab & stab from back?

i like it..i think about a melee engagement circle when you get close enough to a player..we'd need melee moves when holding a rifle or a gun to make it fair..

Yeah definitely.

You would want people with melee weapons to keep their distance though.

Their no guns, but still dangerous.

Buttstock knocks them off ya aswell.

Anything that allows the player to control what happens during the fight/assassination is good (unlike the instant "takedowns" in a lot of shooters). :thumbsup:

I want to avoid traditional game knife combat at all costs.

 

That's just not who knives work, they are not instruments of easy and instant death. I don't mind a knife used as a weapon, but knife fights don't automatically end up with a slashed throat after 2 seconds. While getting stabbed is very dangerous, victims usually take a while to die even from fatal cuts. If knifes can be used as weapons, they should come with a range of bleeding damage. All knives should have a small chance of causing fatal hemorrhaging, large knives should have a larger chance, but please no COD finishing moves. Maybe, maybe if you have someone tied up, but please no Hollywood Delta Force kills.

Sounds great, could have similar stuff with hand to hand, grab and hit style. Maybe make everyone a righty, so both survivors could grab, then have a blow for blow untill one gives up and tries to break it. And id love to see 2 survivors slowly circling with knifes, trying to gab eachother :D

I hope you know this isn't what the threads about.

No insta animation.

You're doing it yourself and the other player has full control of his arms while he's being stabbed.

Maybe he can't aim his gun properly or I see a lot of grabbing and stabbings going something along the lines of grab and abdomen full of 5.56 bullets. maybe your character has to take the gun off his shoulder, and hip fire with a lot of recoil.

A common weakness of gun wielding targets is they get a tendency to think that their gun is their only weapon.

They'd try to point and shoot someone half a metre away before they would try and punch them.

That mentality should kinda come through, gun would deal with people quickly but it should be really hard to handle so close up.

It ain't scripted its just a more real way of handling real time.

Knifes are only really lethal when stabbing, multiple times as well.

You can't slash, it would do about half what current the current 9mm damage is, it shouldn't even kill with a headshot because a knife slash would never go through the skull, that shit requires a good perpendicular stab.

It's all about the grabbing and then the stabbing IRL, sometimes it can be dangerous to just grab someone so maybe an unarmed player can use his fists or hands similarly, only less damaging.

Sure hatchets should be swinging instruments, maybe machetes as well only more with the extended arms.

But by no means should you flail a knife around at somebody with an axe.

Maybe with realistic hit boxes you can kinda move your arms in the way, but they can be stabbed too. The advantage of a long handled weapon would kinda be ability to hold it in defence and smack them with the handle in the nose.

Maybe, it might work or it might not. I must say the hatchet swining atm has no feeling to it, makes you feel like a robot :P

It's because the animations have no wight to them, the mocap guy must've been swinging a carbon fibre dildo.

I want to see some sort of way to vary your shots though to mix combat up instead of repetitive spam.

Low side swipes, which should be able to knock a running zombie clean off his feet.

And the character should visibly be putting his weight into it, the axe head isn't enough alone to do good damage.
