gtx 760 4gb horrible lag

Recommended Posts

First of all, here are my specs:

EVGA GTX 760 4GB, stock settings atm

6 core AMD 1090t thuban 3.2 GHz

8gb ddr3 ram

500 gb samsung hard drive @ 5400rpm

800 volt psu

some entry level ASUS motherboard.

Now here's my problem: I've tried every concievable guide, tip, trick what have you, to improve performance in dayz and arma 2, but nothing helps at all. In an average game, with ~20 players on the server, settings at 1680x1050, overall very high (aa and anisoptric at high because I'm snobby like that), I I barely manage to get over 40fps in forests and 20-30 fps in towns (cities are at 10-20 fps), with settings at very low, it is playable with 50-60 fps in cities. But that's very strange considering people with less performant gpus can manage much higher fps... Is there something I'm missing? Is the game incompatible with my graphic card? does god hate me? I don't think it's an issue with the card since I can easily max out other games at 60fps like max payne 3 or bf3... And before you ask, yes, I do have the latest nvidia drivers.

I'd really appreciate some help or input, thanks

Sorry to burst your bubble but, it's not your GPU, it's your CPU that is the problem here.

Arma2, hence dayz mod, is very badly optimised.

I think the 800 volt PSU is frying your system. I would switch to one with 800 watt.  ;)

jk

The bottleneck would be you pcu as creature said, is that thing really already 3yo? Mounting racing tires on a 40hp mini won't make it run 300km/h.

ArmA is a weird game anyway, a state of the art GPU and CPU is no guarantee for fluid performance.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I realise the cpu is pretty old but I assumed that 6 cores should be enough to run any game...

anyways, what cpu do you guys reccomend I buy? I'm willing to spend a maximum of 200 bucks (before taxes and new mobo purchase)

I lol when I read threads like this... "I get 60 FPS in cherno on low" Well, aren't you lucky? I get maybe 30. You've got a decent machine, and your game runs pretty fast for ArmA 2. Enjoy it or upgrade to a game not terribly optimized!

I guess, but it's a wierd feeling when you dish out 280$ for an upper middle level card to find out that you can't play a game made in 2010 at decent settings.

I think God hates you.

Why are you running 1680 x 1050 anyway ?

Do you know what the problem is? It's ArmA, or DayZ mod, whatever you like. Even depending on what server you play can make a huge difference in performance at times. Have you tried different servers, or different mods like DayZero (which generally gives BETTER performance) or DayZ Overwatch?

Don't buy into the 'your CPU is the problem, go buy a new one' advice here. It's as if what everybody says is just true without even showing some evidence as to WHY your CPU is, or isn't good enough. People who just blindly shout "3.2 GHz just isn't enough" might just as well not post, as it doesn't contribute any knowledge since it is completely false (even the latest and fastest cpu's don't have a much higher clockspeed than 3.2GHz)

Let's get real here: your CPU is not bad by any means. It scores about 5,720 points on the passmark high-end cpu list, which isn't bad at all (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html). Note though that this score is not an absolute, it's only an indication. This does not include performance of each CPU in different games as they may vary. What I have found though is that your CPU is really good at encoding and multitasking, and not so much at gaming (http://www.techspot.com/review/345-amd-phenom2-x6-1100t/page10.html). Yes, it does have 6 cores, and it does have a high clock speed, but all of these things don't necessarily translate into a great gaming cpu. The actual architecture of the CPU is probably the most important part when it comes to that. That is why for instance an I5 2500k is faster in games than your CPU, even though it only has 4 cores and about the same clockspeed.

And again, don't forget DayZ is a b*tch when it comes to running properly. Even people with top of the line systems can and will lag at times in DayZ. I bet you can play tons of other games perfectly fine with your setup, although your CPU might at times hold your performance back a little bit. Still, I bet there are loads of people playing DayZ on CPUs twice as worse as yours.

If you really wish to upgrade in the future, go with an intel i5 or i7 (the I5 4670k would be a nice choice for instance). Those generally are way better for gaming performance than any AMD CPU, as you can see in the picture here, where the Intel I5/I7 scores are way higher than the AMD scores, dispite the fact that some of the AMD ones have 8 cores and the Intel ones only 4! (http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/processors/intel-vs-amd-which-processor-is-best-936589).

Hope this helped you a bit!

Really informative answer, thanks a lot. I agree that the CPU isn't that bad but it does make sense that it can be holding the build back. In other games like gta 4 (with enb of course) I'll average at around 40-50 fps maxed out, except for draw distances. While in battlefield 4 beta i can barely play due to constant frame lags and jerks. Maybe the issue also lies in the physical use/condition of the processor, I bought it right when it came out, so 3 years of solid use (I mainly do a lot of work in premiere and ae) may have also had their toll. Anyways, now I now know in the future that the processor is holy.

I'v got the same cpu and i can play without problems...

Here is the fix:

Go to this folder:
C:\Users\Anonym\Documents\arma 2

Open this files:
ArmA2.cfg
ArmA2OA.cfg

And Edit this lines:
GPU_MaxFramesAhead=XXX;
GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=XXX;

To:
GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1;
GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1;

Enter your game and change your Video memory settings to:
Default
