Excessive military loot

Recommended Posts

The M14 knockout rate is actually quite low at longer ranges.  You ever noticed how often you get shot by DMRs but don't get knocked out?

No. I pretty much find myself on the ground any time I get hit with a weapon that deals 8000+damage. Often times I have less than that much blood, which means it is an insta-kill.

And actually, an interesting point I would like to make. On the Dayz wiki, the DMR is listed with 2 body shots to kill. The m14? 1 body shot, despite the fact that it deals 200 less blood damage.

Don't trust the Wiki too much, both guns use the exact same magazines, same damage.

Make of this what you will...

AKM

Recoil: 5/10

Approx damage: 4500, 3000, 2000 at 0m, 200m, 400m

Accuracy: 6 MOA

Zeroing adjustable 100-800

M14

Recoil: 3/10

Approx damage: 8000, 6600, 5500, at 0m, 200m, 400m

Accuracy: 1.5 MOA

Zeroing fixed 300

Non stop loot circles at the 'zino mil tents will get you an M14 within a couple of minutes at worst, if one hasn't already spawned by the time you start ;)

Something is hugely wrong with the loot respawn there

That's pretty much my point exactly.

I feel like I'm one of the few people that like military loot. Especially more NATO oriented weaponry. I find that often, on a fresh life, I head to the nearest large city, get basic gear, head north, hit up a town, head to either Stary, NWAF or both, get military gear, and if I haven't already, rendevous with my squad.

Then, we vehicle hunt, and often its just a priority list. Do we have medical supplies? No? Then go to Berezino. Do we need ammo? Yes? To the NWAF. It's simple as that, and while having the best items in the game does get boring after a while, having high grade military gear doesn't ruin the game at all.

I love the AKM because it's such an iconic weapon but in DayZ the M14 is the obvious choice.

AKM holds more bullets

AKM/SA58 do less than 60% of the M14's damage, at 400m they do less than 40%.

AKM/SA58 both have much more recoil than the DMR (5-5 and 5-4 respectively, M14 has 3-3 recoil, the same as 5.56 weapons).

M14 has less bullet drop, faster flight time, more accuracy, more power, less recoil, faster effective rate of fire (full auto is useless outside of very close range).

WTF? I thought the AKM was practically the same bullet as the M14 (7.62) - why such a huge difference?

But if you compare bullet damage the M14 deals more damage per mag.

Because the M14 is a battle rifle, it has a much higher effective range.

AKM is 7.62x39

m14 is 7.62x51

There's quite a difference between Russian and NATO ammunition.

In case you missed it earlier in the thread, the DMR mags do ~8000 blood per shot and the AKM mags do ~4500 blood per shot (those are both high enough to onehit kill zambodiddlybops without hitting head).

AKM is 7.62x39

m14 is 7.62x51

Adding onto this, caliber is just the diameter of the bullet.  The length, weight, and overall size vary.

The two rounds in the above example may have the same bullet diameter, but the bullet size isn't the same and one of them has a larger case than the other.  The "39" and "51" are the length measurements.

Take the following image:

calibers1small.jpg

The three on the right are effectively the same caliber, they're all considered "30 cal", which is to say 0.3" in diameter.

(The conversion for inch to mm is 25.4, and you'll note that 0.3 * 25.4 = 7.62)

But, you'll notice that those three rounds are very different from one another.

On top of that, the 9mm round on the left is actually the biggest caliber of any of them but has the least amount of powder propelling it.

Dayz was about exploring, surviving. Taking calculated risks by heading to hotspots. The thrill of trying to get in and out alive after managing to travel up there in the first place.setting up a base with vehicles and tents stuffed with precious loot found at all corners of the map. 20-30 min run is considered end game? hardly. Any experienced dayz player would tell you that 9 times out of ten going to places like stary would either get you killed, or get you some decent gear. Not all of it  Yet your saying that its more risky to stay down south? What is there to lose down south? Beans? And I agree, it is harder to sruvive down south because, as iv said there is now as of 1.8, no reason to leave the coast. I played dayz to explore the huge map and survive it. Not to spend my entire time in cherno death matching. If i wanted to do that, i'd go play an arcade genre game.

It does seem pretty backwards yes. Recently I have been up north trying to survive. It took ages to find any weapon at all. Finally I got an axe. I have no side arm at all. I've also got an assault rife with half a mag and a shotgun with a few shells.

To think that I should have just ran into the nearest city and got that rife immediately is ludicrous. I mean the place is where fire fighters used to work, not police, not army. It doesn't really make sense.

Edit: I should add that I have been going to deer stands and stuff. Haven't ventured to the airfields in this play through.

Rog had a couple cans of food and a bandage...

Firehall North of Elektro had an AK with no mags, some random ammo I didn't need, and a smoke grenade.

I didn't check much further since I heard shots, it was late, and I really didn't want to deal with deciding if I needed to shoot someone or not. The server was empty when I started my wandering so I doubt either had been looted. Very little around.

Sounds very promising so far.

Some days ago I found 2x M14, 1x AK-Kobra, 1x M1014 and 1x M16A2 in ONE firestation :D Was hilariously stupid.

Seriously, WTF!?  How do you people GET these spawns?  Are you perhaps exaggerating your loots?  Best I got out of a firestation in 1.8 was a Kobra.  My M14 and M16-ACOG are from a barracks.

Hell, I've been to 6 or 7 crash sites since 1.8, half of them shortly after a server reboot, and literally the only thing I found so far has been a main rotor assembly.  (I didn't approach too fast and followed the advice in the "loot radius explained" thread)

Bah.  At least I've only gotten one leg break so far and it was from Hercuzombie 1-punching me in the leg and not terrain glitches.

1.8 spawns were kind of ridiculous.  A single firehouse often contained up to 5 guns.

That being said I think 1.8.0.2 barracks are insane if you have a group of people to fix the messed up loot spawns.  Been going around with two friends and about 50% of the barracks we go into have a machine gun, a sniper rifle, and usually 2 other guns.  Including one that had a Mk 48, an M4A1 Holo, and two M40A3s.

Now I just need to wait for the servers I frequent to update. Preferably the ones with the least mods possible.

Yay, I found a DMR!  I think this is the first one I've ever found out in the wild (on public vanilla), not off a corpse or from a teammates.  Dropped my ACOG so now I can share ammo with my M14!

It was at a crash site.  Not too far from another crash site that had a M24.  Actually, there was something weird about that server - it was on the public hive but there were crash sites everywhere, I think I passed like 7 of them.  Four of them were within (distant) eyeshot of each other.  I think the DMR is the only thing worth looting that I found.  Then some loud audio started to play and seeing no other players nearby, I realized it was a commercial.  So I logged.

I still say there's no problem with loot or excessive loot, but then again my perspective is skewed.  May as well ask a midget if they think the top shelf at the grocery store is too high.

I've found several crash sites recently. One had a packet of antibiotics which were a relief to find. The most recent however had two models of G36. One had a G36 Mag. There was also a box of STANAG ammo. Are these boxes meant to spawn?

Whereas I could have made the decision to drop my M4 and decide upon a G36 model to take and be happy that I had one of each magazine type now, instead I had 15 STANAG mags, more than I could carry. It kind of took away some of the challenge. The server I was on isn't heavily populated at the moment so I could cap Zeds no problem. I really do think finding a decent assault rife should leave you having to decide whether you are going to have enough ammo, those ammo boxes are too much and surely just fuel clan wars?
