SA suggestion - lean to and idea for 4 seasons

Recommended Posts

I read a few comments on latest devblog about tents being too visible. I did a search and found nothing on the first idea I will mention. I am sure seasons have been brought up, just sharing an idea for it.

First idea - A lean to. It must have come up before, not sure how it would not. Anyways, it is something that for sure would be done by at least some people fleeing into the bush to survive against zombies, even if it meant hiding under a fallen tree with leaves on ya...

A lean to is simply constructed from branches found around the forest floor and/or small dead trees which litter the forest and can be knocked over pretty easy. Could of course build it next to a campfire, or the campfire next to it. Combining the two provides greater benefits then if it was just one or the other. With warm clothes, a campfire and lean to, players could survive pretty nasty winters. Maybe if you just have a campfire going, and some strong winds start up, your campfire could go out. So a lean to would be needed to protect the fire from the wind, rain, snow etc..    On a side note, I think fires should keep animals away as they generally do irl.

I mention winters because i am hoping for 4 seasons (at some point), not just rain sometimes and snow on top of certain mountains which you never see fall, and wind through the trees.

Imagine that the leaves of deciduous trees turned brown or red etc.. in the autumn and fall off for winter. The only cover in the forests would be the evergreens during winter, until next spring when the deciduous trees go into bloom and grow leaves again. The map would change throughout the year. It makes winter time that much more difficult to survive because there is less cover.

And of course, 4 seasons provides other survival situations.. drought (less fresh water) and sunstroke (player gets ill if he/she is out in the sun for too long without a hat or something) in the summer, cold in winter plus less animals (so players would have to prepare foods in advance to prepare for winter). And of course, spring and fall would be much more rainy etc..

Just some ideas for ya to chew on.  :)

Been suggested before but still a good idea, probably not as much detail you put in about other survival hazards.  From my understanding they would have to make a new map for each season with all the relevant textures, minor (and major) modifications and all that to change for each season.  One thing I would add is make the seasons real time (at least on main hive servers).  IE winter is actually 3 months long, not some Harvest Moon thing where each month/week the map changes seasons.

Yeah real time seasons is what I meant. Maybe a compromise could be made? Instead of 4 whole maps being needed. Just add the weather effects (hardest parts would be adding snow which sticks to the ground, and rain causing puddles etc.. I know currently they can only have water at sea level, hope that changes), and deciduous trees with changing leaf color and for winter actually losing leaves. I really like the idea of having cover only in the evergreens during winter. I would be totally happy with that. For me, no need for 4 separate texture sets etc..   Sure it is not as realistic.. but tis a way to have 4 seasons. Anyways.. I can dream!

The lean sounds good.  I am really hoping for seasons in standalone.  Seasons change every 24 hours maybe?

Not possible with the static map, you would have to make 4 maps for 4 seasons, maybe 20gb of data.

So ya think that just adding weather effects and deciduous trees with changing leaves would still require 4 maps? Like I said, I would be happy with these two additions to simulate seasons. Not all the grass, ground and building textures etc etc need to change.

You can't have real time flora since every object is static. That also included textures you would have to change for every season. So you would have to make a map for every season sicce every season looks different, that#s how it works in ArmA.

Even if they just added in weather effects, IE make it cold in 'winter', overly hot in 'summer' ect, they would have to make new maps.  They can't just sub in weather patterns for the whole map without some problems, otherwise we'd randomly have snowstorms and drought right after another.
