LilBambi 35 Posted September 8, 2013 So you've probably seen the new Devblog update... tons of new features being added (it's like their reading my mind! :D). But what really caught my eye was that rat running around as a player-controlled character at the end. Not only was it funny to watch, but it looked really fun to play as too. So I was wondering... is there a way this could somehow be in the Standalone? I don't know how exactly, but I think it would make for some hilarious experiences. What do you think? Cormyr 39 Posted September 9, 2013 I think that would make it a different game. Maybe it was not controlled by a player (I do not recall them saying it was player controlled, if they did, my bad). Could have been a camera set to follow the rat to show the details of it and animation etc..
Karmaterror 982 Posted September 9, 2013 You can be control any animal in the arma 2 editor. Iv read that eventualy SA will be moddable, so if they give us an editor you would be able to use it. If you attached it to a blufor survivor group you could probably get the zeds to chase you.

Well, actually I don't remember them saying anything about the rat at all in the video, which is why it caught my attention so much. I just assumed it was player controlled because I've never seen AI move like that. Regardless, the animations are looking fantastic. If we can't control the rats, at least they should be a threat of some sort. For example, they may infect food spawns or bite you and get you infected. It'd just be nice to have some other threat besides players and zombies. You can be control any animal in the arma 2 editor. Yeah, a mod of the SA is probably the first time we'll get to try it out.
IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted September 9, 2013 It may have been 'player' controlled just to demo show off the new mouse/rat, or more than likely it was just set to follow an AI rat. I highly doubt we'd be able to play as animals in SA without the use of hacks. Now as said before you can play as animals in the Arma2 Editor and Armory. I think we found a 'new' food source to be honest *gets mallet* Heeer Skeever skeever skeever!
AP_Norris 1018 Posted September 9, 2013 Just wait for the hax and you will be rat.
Cormyr 39 Posted September 9, 2013 Yeah I would like to see the rats as more than just something you find scurrying around here and there. Say you do some hunting, cook up the meats and store some at your base. Make another trip elsewhere, come back later and find rats have gotten into your stash. Not only are you missing some cooked meats, but what is left might just make ya sick. Other than cooked meats etc.. I do not know how they could ruin other foods which spawn, like canned beans. They cannot open cans. Mind you they would be able to get into a bag of chips or something packaged like that. So maybe ya come across a can of pop and a ripped open bag of chips with a few left.. gotta decide if it is worth eating the remaining chips and possible getting ill. Not sure how they could be a direct threat to the player. Maybe if ya get knocked out and you are bleeding, while you are lying on the ground unconscious, they quickly run over to chomp on your wound. Thus infecting your wound etc... Some thoughts for ya to chew on.

h3l1x 327 Posted September 9, 2013 rats tend to carry diseases in societies with low higiene, rat excrements in your equipment is a breeding ground for nasty things. Yet, apparently you can also survive feeding on rats. It has been done before in big famines, sieges, etc.
Cormyr 39 Posted September 9, 2013 (edited) Oh yeah, rat crap in your stuff! haha. maybe if ya find rats around your base, tis best to wash your clothes before wearing them, or end up with nasty rash or something. and yeah, if ya cook one up, ya can survive on them. Anyone seen the 1983 film, Never Cry Wolf? Interesting film where a researcher dude goes up north and lives near wolves, ends up eating and acting (peeing to mark territory etc..) like they do in some ways, rat was on the menu. I think the guy was up there for months. Cannot recall. Edited September 9, 2013 by Cormyr
DemonGroover 8836 Posted September 9, 2013 Perhaps there should be a 0.0001% chance you spawn as a rat. Of course zombies would have to try and eat you as well, otherwise it would get pretty boring.
Statik (DayZ) 2695 Posted September 10, 2013 Spawning as an animal is a horrid idea. People can easily exploit it by telling their friends where players are.
carbine781 (DayZ) 131 Posted September 10, 2013 I'm not a big fan of the spawn as an animal idea. Maybe it could be an easter egg or a custom dayz mod can come out that implements this, but it would change gameplay in a bad way. Thats at least what I think it would do. IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted September 10, 2013 As I said, you people see rats and think "WTF are we going to be able to play as rats?" I see it and think, "Great, now I need a pellet gun or mousetrap to go hunting. Also, rats, given enough time, can chew through metal (they're a big problem at my dad's workplace, they eat through insulation like nothing till they hit wires, and usually keep trying if they don't get shocked, they also chew through copper pipes they use in place of wires (wires were so big that the inner strands were unused, so they just started using pipes).
