Flashlight in 1.7.1.5

Recommended Posts

Can anyone explain how the flashlight works in 1.7.1.5?

I have one in a toolbelt slot, and handgun and rifle in their respective slots. I can't just press L and have the flashlight work, but apparently you can remove from the toolbelt which gives me a "you do not have enough room" message despite having 5 free inventory slots.

Have you tried equiping without a handgun/secondary being in it's slot? Maybe it has to be empty?

Right click on it's image (right hand side of gear menu) and then select "remove from toolbelt"

I take it the handgun slot must be free before you can do "remove from toolbelt" ?

Yup, but it will check and give you an error notification if there is no space.

Maybe it should read 'equip flashlight' rather than 'remove from toolbelt'?

Just makes it a ton easier to understand

Hmmm.. okay.. a couple of scenarios..

(note - I have not played DayZ since 1.7.1.1, so the mechanics are soley based on information I have read with patch notes)

Scenario 1 -

Player has a main weapon equiped, a sidearm equiped and a full bag of items. He wishes to equip his light to go in a dark room. He has to Make 6 slots free in his pack for the handgun, and probably one slot per magazine of ammo for his handgun. He has to deposit items on the ground to move the handgun to his pack, then he can equip the torch to use. He has the problem that he has now deposited 6+ items on the ground, which he has to return to at a later time, trusting he comes out of the building the same direction, and with enough time to find the items again (obviously in a time restrictive situation, would make this very hard, especially to select what items are more 'loseable' than others.

Analysis -

Under the older system, he is actually no worse now than he was before. Previously, 6 slots in his backpack would be taken up with the torch anyway. Benefit of having the torch on the toolbelt means a player had 6 more 'temporary' item slots in their backpack than they normally would have. It's a blessing.

Scenario 2 -

Player 1 has a main weapon, a silenced side arm, a torch and full bags and inventory.

Player 2 (a friend) has the above, except a normal sidearm compared to a silenced sidearm, and no torch.

They are about to go inside a building. Player 1 wants to give player 2 his torch to lead the way with the torch with player 1 able to silently kill any threats (assuming Player 1 does not trust player 2 enough to give him the silenced weapon instead, or maybe Player 2 is not a good a shot as player 1). Player 1 needs to drop items from his backpack (6+ slots to be free), to be able to move the pistol into his pack (could drop his gun on the floor, but who wants to do that with a silenced weapon?), to then take the torch off his toolbelt, then drop the torch onto the loot pile, then re-arm his sidearm, then pick up his dropped loot.

Analysis - This is a very time consuminig process, especially in a time restricted situation if the threat is an aproaching Z or player. Is it possible to have two options appear with a right click on the torch on the toolbelt? 1 to 'Equip Flashlight' as stated above, and 2 to 'Drop torch'?

needs to add duct tape item so you can tape the torch to your rifle/hat

This is the conclusion I arrived at as well. I'm not going to be juggling inventory items between my bag and inventory to get a flashlight to work if I have chemlights available at the press of F.

Ideally, with the flashlight on your toolbelt you'd want to press F and cycle to flashlight then L to activate it. It'd be nice if we could hold a pistol and flashlight at the same time, CSI style ;)

Thats what makes the G17 so desirable. It does have a torch built into the pistol. It's amazing :)

Damn I didn't realize the g-17 had a light. It's very week in combat but I guess all pistols are.

Talking about toolbelts and gear. It's a bit of messing around to drop items, do what you need to do and pick them up again but it's kind of cool. Yesterday I had to drop my shotgun to equip my axe and silently kill a boar, harvest wood, start a fire and cook the meat. Then I moved the axe back to my tool belt, picked up the shotty and kept going through the woods. I really loved the entire little scenario. It made me feel very vulnerable while prepping and cooking as my shotty was on the ground. Genius!

The Glock 17 isn't that bad in a combat situation. We were ambushed at Stary once, three people made their way to overlook the military camp. They setup an AS50 sniper to shoot two of us in the camp. They shot one of us, I took cover. Our overwatch heard the shot, which was pretty much right next to him. He got up, shot and killed all three people with just the Glock.

Nice! How many clips? One complaint I have heard is it is weak. However, I bet it does some nice blinding at night against NVGs.

He got mostly headshots, I think he used a magazine and a half (since he missed a bit). It's weak if you're not aiming for vitals (heart/head), but it's main uses, like stated from others before, is the fact it has a flashlight on it. It's a great weapon at night, although, I refuse to carry it. I tend to get raped by players whenever I have one. :-/
