A rare moment in DayZ

Recommended Posts

I'm on a Overwatch 40+ player server. The kind of server where you have to run away from the coast as soon as you spawn or you will die within minutes.

Looting the tower at Zub and taken by surprise by a player looking down at me from the stairs above. Aiming right at me.

I turn and run down, no shots fired, find cover an direct chat to him and ask if he's friendly.

Yes, he says. Waiting for a friend, he ads and I ask him if he wants me to leave. No, you can loot and I do so, trusting him as he had the chance to shoot me already. And that was it. I looted, thanked him for not being a dick and got the hell out.

I was a bit touched to be honest... made my eyes water..

I feel worse and worse when I think about how rare moments are like these to the point you had to make a thread about it, it really shows how far downhill the playerbase has went.

Nearer the inception of the mod it was the complete opposite, everyone was out to survive, trying to help each other and bandits were treated like.. well, bandits.

It's what DayZ has evolved too.  Yes, there are still a few people left that are friendly but most have moved onto KoS.

Honestly KoS is the easiest way to survive.  You don't risk the guy you ran into, backstabbing you, and you get some loot off him.

However I still enjoy being a hero.  It gives me the best DayZ experience.  I enjoy helping others and the rush it gives at time when I encounter another player.

I hate to be a nitpicker but this is inception:

Inception-Wallpaper-inception-2010-12396

I assume the proper term would be conception or creation.

On-topic: Yes, it is pretty sad that this is no longer as common as it was last year, but I'm hoping the standalone will give more incentive for players to be friendlier.

I said inception because I meant inception - it's an actual word.

Dok Faustus seems to have taken care of it though, at least next time check a dictionary before looking like a muppet.

Skat3, I understand completely why it's the way it is, the more people join that want an easier way to survive and live longer which is shooting on sight and it makes complete sense - I still do miss the older community due to the love for the mod itself and not because it's a popular thing to play.

On th eother hand, the more people that play the more money can be sunk into development - that can't hurt :D

i still play friendly, in a year of playing i've only killed 6 players ^.^ i die a lot tho, but it's worth it to still meet that one friendly survivor going along the road

Yeah, i just tried Overwatch a couple of days ago.

Ran into a barn east of cherno 5min after spawning, and started looting.

10sec after that, i got shot be a silenced rifle that took me down to -29000hp, and in the death screen i received the message "banned for teleport hack".

Sooo, cant really say ive experienced the same generosity as you in Overwatch, but hey, good for you ;)

I do this all the time.  WHy waste ammo on someone with no weapon or who is friendly?  They always seem so surprised.

Me and my brother don't KOS but that has came back to bite me a lot...He always says ''Don't trust no one'' but I always talk him into it.

So the other day we were riding around and found 2 guys on the street he wanted to kill em and I said no lets give these guys a chance ..cause I want the game to be like it was before it became call of duty...well we pick them up and we take em to a few spots to help em find guns and stuff to show em we aren't the bad guys and guess what they shoot me and steal our truck lol...I'm starting to get to the point where if you don't KOS you should just go ahead and kill yourself cause a bullet is coming with your name on it from someone.

Last week I hopped on Vanilla to run around with some friends and found myself up North. I had a Lee Enfield and enough ammo but I still  hit some barns looking for enough food and water to run and meet my friends. I ran into another survivor with a Hatchet out and covered him with the gun but since he didn't move towards me I did not fire. He said "Friendly, Friendly!" into the mike and I let him pass and shot a zombie agro'd on one of us. I moved quickly through the barn, grabbed a soda and a can of food and left the rest for him. I moved out of the area just in case he found a gun and decided he wasn't actually friendly, but I wasn't going to shoot someone who was not hostile to myself.

Later on in Vanilla and in Breaking Point my friend and I have made it a point to hop onto busy servers and see if we can hunt down some of the bandits. We have 6 or 7 bandit kills under our belts(the one combat logged) but we also have 2 murders each. The unfortunate fact is that when someone switches skins it's impossible to determine their "alignment". Sitting on a hill overlooking Elektro with DMR in hand and bandit skin... easy choice. Running through the woods in Ghillie or in Breaking Point any of the other skins you could find all over the place, impossible to tell.

The two of us ran into 4 guys. They looked geared up and had two vehicles. The had scoped rifles and were heading towards the ridge overlooking Elektro. Now, they might have been hunting bandits like we were or they could have been getting into position to shoot bambies. We couldn't tell their motives and 4 on 2 would go the wrong way if they were bandits and we announced our presence and our stated goal of shooting people preying on new spawn and hunting bandits. They were not "bandits" by the moral system in the game but it is remarkably easy to bloodbag your way to Hero status or at least out of Bandit status in Breaking Point.

So we followed the best tactical assessment we could at the moment and shot them. ~IF~ the typical interaction was not KoS and the average interaction was trustworthy with the general DayZ populous we would have announced ourselves and tried to determine their actions, but the typical response to, "Hi... I'm friendly and I was hoping yo...." is *blam*, *blam*, *blam*!

I'm a friendly guy, I've teamed up with people multiple times. I've only been backstabbed a few times, but I make sure not to team with shady characters. Today I gave a total stranger a ride to Stary and he gave me a hand grenade and anti's in return. See? Its not all bad. I think you are all overblowing it. Or I have a server with a more than average amount of friendlies. Anyhoo, I play on US 635. join me, I'm lonely. My friend left me for Rome 2.

Its interesting how people react when you don't blow their brains out straight away.

They are surprised long enough to let you take better aim

I was on Panthera a while back and we were on the big island off the mainland. We were looting a crash site on the grass airfield and I was down at our PBX when I see a player swimming from the mainland. He had almost made it when I spoke over direct and told him to turn around. He replied "don't shoot me" and I told him if he swam away I wouldn't and that we were almost done and could come back when we left.

In one amazing stroke of luck which has been nothing but a pvp server, Panthera again, I died at some point and then the next 5 people i ran into were all friendly, some of which got on our TS server.

Killing people on the most part is cheap kills - always against a player who's back is to you or a fresh spawn. Just watch Youtube to see these dicks reveling in their kills - "WOW OMG you're so L337!!! You totally killed that fresh spawn as he was sucking that zombies dick you're so cool I wish I was like you lolz"

Like these people showed any skill whatsoever, used 3rd person to get an advantage and then think they're actually good player because they can get some kills but against players that have no idea they're there. Maybe they should go try that on BF3 or something.

I enjoy playing friendly as well and it surprises me when I find someone who does the same:

I was on an Overwatch server the other day and was in the tower at Zub castle on the third floor. I was guarding 3 AKMs, 2 M16A2s and and M4 with ammo, meds and other things that had been spawned/left there. A player came up the stairs with his rifle aimed at me and he didn't say anything as he advanced toward me so I fired 2 rounds from my M4 into him and he went prone and yelled "Friendly! Friendly!" so I ceased fire. He then shot at me when there was a lag between him talking and me responding with "ok, sorry" so I shot him in the face, thinking that it was a dupe. He talked back and forth with me telling me that he was sorry for shooting, but he didn't hear my response saying that I was friendly as well and I guarded his body until he returned to get his gear and now we team up all the time. But, even MORE surprising:

This afternoon I got onto a DayZero server and I had just spawned. There were Zeds everywhere around where I spawned and I was aggro'd immediately (damnit)...so I ran from them, got hit a couple of times, bled a good bit before I could lose them in the water, and bandaged myself, using my only bandage (veteran server and this was the first time I had played DayZero). Anyway, a white truck comes barreling down the road and I said "hey truck!" I get a "?" in the side chat. I responded, "Can I have a lift to wherever has weapons and meds? I just spawned, no weapon, friendly." He said, "there's a gun in the back of the truck. Take it." I couldn't believe it!! Then, even more surprising was when I got to the truck, he killed me. I'm jk! The gun he had in the inventory was an AK74 with a scope (looked like a Dragonov scope!) and 1 mag. I couldn't believe that he gave me something other than a Makarov, if that! He drove away, I said, "thanks a lot!" and he said, "you're welcome :)" and that was the end of it. Feels good to know that there are others like that huh? (not to mention that someone else later on tried to drive blindly down the coastline to get to me when I had 2% blood and was crawling thru a town with no map due to a broken leg...)
